To lower the power used by graphicscard when its not needed. This will result in less heat and less battery usage..

You shouldn't worry though since you have ATI.

I see but i overclocked my card, so it runs at OC temps all the time, but does it matter i mean in windows it does not run hot and when gaming it hits 70C

Doesn't matter if it doesn't annoy you.. Temperatures are not a problem before they reach 90-100.

    guys 2 questions?

    1. since it is established it is technically undervolting, doesnt it reduce in-game performance?

    2. Also, my specs are in the sig. Can i run this method on my system? Any risks?

    1. As it is clocks that matters, i guess that it doesnt reduce ingame performance, no.

    2. I dont know.. Go ahead, its not dangerous :)

    1. It doesn't reduce performance.. the only thing it reduces performance in is windows benchmark.. 3DMark Vantage and games work excellently.

    2. no problems. My temps are actually much better so i can OC.

I'd love to follow this guide as I can fry eggs on my Compaq laptop, but I'm stuck on step 4 because:

I tried with 190 drivers as well, same thing.

    Windows 7 64bit
    gforce 6150

Im not certain but i think your graphics card is an onboard, or something, and therefore it cannot be "overclocked". Sorry.

No, no. It is semi-integrated which means only it's memory cannot be overclocked. I used to use RivaTuner with it on XP some time ago.

I think maybe RivaTuner does not support drivers above 186?
I got a hold of them but can't install as they are desktop only and I cant find modifier nv_disp.inf

Did you try the ForceDriverVersion thing? I haven't used Rivatuner in ages, since i barely use my laptop nowadays, but there's a good chance it doesnt support the driver.. Since your card is old you might as well go with an earlier driver, i'd say.

    Apologies for the long post.

Hi all. I've got a strange situation and I'm hoping someone can clarify what's going on. And before I get into my situation, I wanted to say thank you very much to the op of this thread as well as everyone else who contributed. Disclaimer: I am a complete greenie at changing graphics settings other than resolution and colors.

I have an Asus g51vx laptop, which has an nvidia gtx260m card. I've had problems with a hot gpu but don't know how long the problem has been there as I only started checking the gpu maybe a few months ago.

I downloaded the FFXIV benchmark released by Square Enix and saw that my GPU was hovering in the upper 90s. It then hit 100, 101, etc., and I stopped the benchmark test when the gpu got to 105. I googled for how to reduce the temp and found this thread.

After following the steps I got to the point where I was to add the things for scheduling, but there was no "hardware acceleration" listed in the dropdown in my UI (more on that later). Since I couldn't figure out how to get that added, I unchecked the box to run Rivatuner at startup thinking I'd figure it out eventually. I also ran Powermizer Switch and set it to on/ready.

Then I rebooted and reran the FFXIV benchmark. Depending on whether I had my laptop set to medium or maximum performance, the gpu temp varied between 80 and 89. I almost had a coronary. :D

I turned OFF the settings in powermizer switch, thinking the temp would go back up to 105 the next time. I made no changes in Rivatune this time. I also opened up the case and dusted with compressed air while the laptop was shut down. After starting it back up I ran another FFXIV benchmark test wth the laptop set to maximum performance (one of asus's config options) and although I was expecting the max gpu temp to go back up to 105, it fell yet another 10 degrees. Now this could be due to the dusting. So I started out with 105 as the max before I prematurely shut the test down, and now it runs aroud 79 max. Incredible. My idle temps were originally hovering in the mid 70s. Now they're in the low 60s.

BUT... what would cause this change if I told Rivatuner NOT to start when Windows starts? Are there settings that are changed even if Rivatuner doesn't restart when you reboot?

I went back and messed around some more, found out how to add "hardware acceleration to the scheduler's dropdown list, and tried to get the scheduler things working but I ended up seeing artifacts so I stopped fiddling with that. As I said earlier, I'm a total newbie at this stuff. I just really want to know what could have changed for the GPU to have such a huge change in temp even before the dusting. I did download another temp checker and it matched what the original checker was telling me.

Thoughts? And I apologize for the long post.

To the op: you are wonderful. :D

    Thanks lol :p

Regarding your 'issue' i really can't figure it out either.. It doesn't help that i never really use my laptop outside school anymore, i've kinda already lost grip on what rivatuner is all about lol.. But i guess your case is a good thing, no? I mean it's a huge difference in temps even though we cant really explain why. Do you notice any performance differences in gaming?

I don't know man.. Probably a driver or powermizer issue.. Have you tried reinstalling some nvidia drivers?

    good luck
