1 year later, high end 6990m playing high end game what can this card still do in terms of performance

I agree with your point 1000%. At native resolution it's very difficult to tell the difference. I rarely ever use AA at native res.

If you can't see aliasing at 1080p I envy your broken eyes.
    You aren't crazy.

TW2's in-game solution is MLAA (Morphological Anti-Aliasing), which blurs textures and causes some detail to be lost. It's an inferior form of AA to what Nvidia produces.

so you can see AA at 1080p on a 15.6in screen. incred...

some people have better vision then others, pehaps I need my eyes re checked as my glasses dont seem sharp enough to spot the difference.

im not really argueing anything just have an opinion. I personally dont notice it while others can..wish I had better vision than 20/20

Just want to toss this out there - every high def movie on the market is unplayable? Since, you know, it is delivered at 23.96FPS... ;)

If I can run a game at 1080p, I usually turn off any form of aa that might be running. I can't tell a bit of difference so, I dump that extra load on my gpu's.

Couple months ago I ended up with a maxed out M18x: 3920xm and dual 680m's.

Figured I'd dump Skyrim on it to see how it played compared to my old, far weaker system, that I originally played it on.

Well, it auto configured to everything ultra. Mostly ran buttery smooth but, in the swampy area by Solitude, it got a bit choppy. I turned off the aa, and other than the framerate getting nice n smooth, I couldn't tell a single difference with the aa off, at max rezz.

Definitely to each their own, on this topic.

Wow, really? That would look awful in a videogame. Lower framerates are more noticeable when the camera is moving around rapidly and the view is constantly changing, which is common in gaming. Film is usually shot in a stationary view, so it isn't noticeable that it's running at sub-30fps (that's my view of it at least.) I wouldn't notice if a game were running badly until I started moving the camera around and everything begins to stutter.

The more responses the more likely it will attract a moderators attention. What I've found is that if you give someone enough rope he will most assuredly hang himself and the moderators will remove the problem.

Sadly I don't think it's an intentional effort to irritate people but rather an inability to effectively communicate in a non-abrasive manner that creates the majority of the issues. Much like a car wreck or plane crash, such threads will always be viewed by more than your average thread that actually serves a purpose and provides knowledge to the general populace.

I think it has more to do with it being a locked framerate than anything really, I mean look at movies like Wanted or anything racecar ;)

I definitely hear you - when you get into the low 20s it's more choppy than a movie because it's not a steady stream of frames. For instance, you could have a game render 25 frames in a tenth of a second, then take 9/10ths of a second to render the 26th, and it would still be "26FPS."

I was just giving you grief lol :)

And to get straight up technical, if the challenge is to max everything, and you go on to say "I can turn down useless settings" - which by the way are not useless if the difference is even mildly noticeable - you are no longer maxing the game, you are running at below maximum since by definition, the settings can go higher.

If I had a ferrari, and a friend had a civic, and someone told us to go maximum speed, and my ferrari did 200MPH, and my civic-driving friend did 70MPH claiming that he didn't need to go over 70MPH so his civic was just as fast as the ferrari <--- that is what you sound like.

Films have natural motion blur which makes a difference. Games are static frames, they are too clean so need i higher rate.

Well if I remember correctly the 680m/7970m are not truly 100% faster than a single 6990m. They may be double as fast as 2 6990m's in crossfire, but that is because the GPU's aren't capable of scaling 100%. (due to my limited knowledge). feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. :)

What does that matter .. You seem to be championing the 6990m regardless of what people say with complete disregard for numbers as a whole,
And it has been pointed out that FC3 is lacking in the optimisation side of things as the ATI/AMD Drivers are behind ,
You seem happy with the setup you have can we not just leave it as that ?

I think there are any number of features, but I would put realtime reactivity at a higher priority than framerate. I've played racing games at a solid 21FPS that were good and enjoyable, but I've played 250FPS+ in Need For Speed Shift on a display that had a very minor display lag, and it was near unplayable. Stupid polaroid plasma screen at a friends house. haha

Though I honestly don't have the answers to that, I was just pointing out that high definition playback standard is under 24FPS for 1080p content ;)

Haha I like to consider myself the counter-troll. This whole thread is an exercise in off-topic mayhem and it makes me laugh.

Anyway, the 6990M is a great card, and can still play most games at very high settings. Aside from that, I'm not too sure of the topic of this thread that I am supposed to keep my posts in context of ;)

My 6970M is also still going strong at 1080p, nearing 2 years later. But we shouldn't be surprised, with these cards being based on the desktop 6850 and 6870.

This paints the picture for why we tell people to push the majority of their budget toward the strongest GPU available, because you're paying for the longevity of not having to reduce the resolution and graphical settings in your games within that 2 year period.

I'm honestly considering keeping it until the Summer of 2014, if my laptop can make it that long.

sorry guys about my one thread on overclocking. I overclocked to 850/1050 and look at my results with a modified 12.11 beta 11 driver x modded and look at my frame rates this is completely maxed 8aa ect... a few pictures of running and a intensive area by the water. look below

    1080p/enhanced ac/hdao/8x aa/ ultra preset.

note I run off a hd tv at 720p because im sitting back 8-10 feet and cannot notice the difference between 1080p and 720p at this distance and the scaling isn't like a laptop display, it doesn't cause blurry unless you go below 1064x600.

ps I was going to call sager and order the 680m however if it maxes the newest games at 1080p whats the point better off waiting 5 months for the 780m/8970m

I'd still take a 580m over a 6990m any day. You can overvolt and get better performance and you also get the stability of nvidia drivers. ;)
