    Hey thanks for your guide!

I flashed an undervolt bios for my 7970m to 0.975v. Ever since it's been stuck no matter how many times I flash stock bios. So I tried your method to get it back to 1050v. I save the file, and if I reopen it it's still at 1050. However if I run render test in GPU-Z it causes the voltage to go back to 975. Any idea why this is happening?

    I just received my M17x R4 with i7 3630QM, 7970M, 6GB RAM, 500gb 7200rpm HDD and scored a P6646. Is that an optimal result?

If you driver is older than 12.11 beta (as the official Dell website is still holding on to that ancient relic of 12.4), then a driver update might give you a nice boost in scores (and gaming performance).

In any case 6.6k is already far cry from the 5.6k or so that stock 7970M got at launch :)

I doubt those are older drivers.
Newer drivers were associated with 6.6k scores

1070 on stock voltage is crazy! That Performance score is a full 1000 more than my best @ 950/1400 1.05v.
What clocks do you run with 0.975v? Any overclock with undervolt?

Slide it to 1560, save, close AB, open AB, now you can slide it further. Be Careful!

Is everyone using AB only, or are you guys also using Trixx?

I've noticed that if I use AB, my screen will stutter and when I reset back to stock clocks, they will stay at the downclocked speeds even if I run a program or game.

I've found by using Trixx, I am able to OC without the stutter and even reset back to stock clocks without issues.

Granted, I haven't tried AB since installing 13.5b, so not sure if it was an issue with previous drivers.

You could manually edit the registry like mahalsk suggests, but I just took a look at the program and as that popup window says, in the Settings there is a checkbox for "Disable ULPS".

Isn't disabling ULPS gonna keep the card @ max clocks, resulting in ridiculously permanent high temps and noise?

    64 bit direct link: www2.ati.com/DriverS/mobile/13-4_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe

(says ati because AMD graphics was previously ATI graphics before the company merger)

You might need to update your Microsoft .net Framework too. www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30653

Pop by into device manager after you're done, go to the 7970M look at the drivers tab to ensure that the driver version's 12.1040.0.

There are many instances where the Catalyst GUI (Control Center) updates but the driver actually doesn't so it'll be best to check.

Not working on Alienware m17x R4 7970m 3720QM. Stock voltage 1.000 and not more, but in Profiles i set 1.075. p.s. cat 13.5 beta 3
    p.s. have stable 960/1560 on stock 1.000 V. Yes, i have stock 1.000, not 1.050.
    p.p.s. let's try flash bios.
p.p.p.s bad idea :( 430/740 on boot, can't OC more than 900/1260 in Afterburner :( return to stock Rom. let's try Sapphire Trixx method.
p.p.p.p.s it's bag with 13.6 beta Catalyst, not bios.

Depends a lot on the game. But I as getting around 84-85c in metro2033 (1080p, high, adof, Tess) but after turning off adof and starting to hit 75-125fps (temps went to 91) I had to go back to 1ghz and stock voltage. Same temps again.

Crysis 3 is the other game that brings temps up to near 90c border. Less demanding games run at around 70-75ish.

    gf 780m have 7600-7700 P 3dmark11 in stock.
amd 7970m at core 1000 memory 1500 have same results.

p.s. Interesting result, i have completed all graphic test at 1035/1560 successfully, but in Tes5: SKYRIM at more than 1000/1500 i always have visual artifacts and crashes. All others game work great at higher clocks.

    p.p.s. Can't do 3dmark11 with more than 1040 core :( i try voltage 1.075 , 1.1 , 1,125 but not result.

So in other words the max OC of 7970m is higher than 680m? Because 780m at stock has 10% higher score compared to max OC 680m. Confused...

    guys, i am wondering something.

I will soon receive my 7970m to install in my m17x r2. as i see the stock 3dmark 11 scores are ~5800, well i just realized that with my 5870 crossfire i get 5000-5100 score in 3dmark 11' ..... that difference looks very low.. i am wondering wether the upgrade might not be so evident to me. will i see a good difference in gaming speed with this upgrade? because my initial calculations were these:

    7970m speed = 6990m crossfire and 6990m = 5970m crossfire , so actually i thought that i would get a 70-100% better frame rates . BUT with the 3dmark 11 scores beeing only 16% better i wonder...

The 7970M scores ~P6400 in 3dMark11 with current drivers, not the P5500-P5800 that was reported when the card launched. With an extremely modest overclock to 900/1250MHz, which should run cool and rock stable 24/7, scores will be brought up to ~P6700. Take one more step and push it up to 900/1500MHz and your scores will be ~P7000. I don't have any stability issues with memory at 1500MHz but prefer not to stress my components as 1250MHz memory has been plenty thus far, of course your mileage may vary.

At the end of the day, speaking strictly numbers here, it is around a 28% upgrade from your current setup at stock clocks and ~34% with a modest 900/1250MHz overclock. Really it is with the games that really matters, and you should definitely see and feel a difference, particularly at higher resolutions.

well 20-30% upgrade is not bad but initially with my calculations i thought it would be at the 70-80% range

then why do people say that thats the way it goes?

    7970m speed = 6990m crossfire and 6990m = 5970m crossfire

    ??

Hi, I was wondering about issues with my 7970m overclocking. Whenever I overclock with msi afterburner, and when I switch between windows, and tabs in chrome, sometimes there are these little horizontal line glitches that just lasts for less than a second. Also the lower part of the screen sometimes might jump around for just under a second too. It's hard to describe and even take a picture of. This happens with any overclock, even a modest one.

Any insight on how to fix this? I'm running 13.4 cataylst, no enduro, just fully running on discrete graphics. Specs are in my signature.

    Thanks

Well your score of 5000 is with a heavy overclock, than you can compare it with a heavy overclocked 7970m which socres around 8000 on gpu.

    Stock 5870 cf score is - P3900
    Stock 6970 cf score is - P6400
    Stock singe 7970m is - P6450

So your calculation are almost alryght. There isn't a big jump between 6xxx and 5xxx generatin becouse it was just a rebadge.

Edit: I'm talking about GPU score without CPU as that is important
