It's about 200-300+ right now. You can also check out the T9300/T8300 if you don't intend to overclock.

I think you would get better FPS in anything with a lower resolution.

Where is the best place to buy a X7800? I tried to search and the price was $900 plus. Sorry if this is a stupid question or I'm missing something; I'm new to laptops and upgrading... back in the DOS days I was awesome but two kids and coaching rec sports has made my computer skills a little slow these days.

There's one brand new and sealed on ebay ending in about eleven hours. Zero bids so far; starting price 389.99, buy it now at 429.99.

The Best place is Ebay. You can get most all CPU's alot cheaper there than anywhere else.

I think all of us that run Extreme CPU's all got ours there (unless they have a high end clevo rebrand)

And dont worry if you see ES (engineering Sample) they arent retail CPU's but none of us have ever had a problem with them.

But dont pay as much as the last poster mentioned for the x7800. Its a good chip but with a little waiting and good shopping i think most have been able to get them for ALOT less than that. I got my x9000 for less than 429 (384 shipped)

So which CPU would be the best to buy? In reading the thread it seemed like the X7800 would give the best performance boost. I was going to buy a new desktop but I think I'll just upgrade my laptop instead. I really haven't used it much since I bought it in April I did notice a seller in Hong Kong selling an X7800 for $279 but that seems risky... even though they have 99.3 feedback.

I was debating between getting an extreme cpu but I settled for a t9300. Unless you are running something super cpu intensive like rendering or encoding t9300 will be fine (it has 6 megs of l2 cache..that helps). Also it undervolts great and has awesome temps. Lowest I've seen it is 28c highest is 44c.

As WysockiSauce said actually a t8300 or t9300 is more than most people can ever use in a computer.

I got the x9000 for a few diffrent reasons. Gaming was one, i play alot of RTS games and they are alot more dependant on the CPU than most other games, In my spare time i'm rendering a planet (so alot of CPU intensive time) and basically i wanted to join the "cool kids club"*.

For most people your computing and gaming experience will top out with a t8300 or a t9300, and you will be very very happy with that purchase.

But basically the choice is yours.
If you want preformance and a good price t8300-t9300
If you just want to be a part of the "cool kids club"* and want to go all out for preformance then x7800 or x9000

*cool kids club is a registered trademark** of the Gateway subforums and more specifically the FX computer owners

**ok, so its not so much a registered trademark as a great way to get big league chew*** and a free fruit peeler***

*** ok so maybe you dont actually get big league chew and a fruit peeler...but we can always promise it to you so you feel good about spending a large chunk of money on something thats not really important in your life...but it is so shiney
    :p

Ah the originator of the cool kids club (in spirit if not in name) ;)

yeah we all like the x9100...but unfortunatly that 60mHz (or more with a better overclock) just isnt worth trying to sell and rebuy everything that most of us already have. its great for the ones that needed a new laptop though, because the motivena chipset is a pretty decent upgrade over santa rosa.

You bought from the Hong Kong store? I only ask because the description says ES which I thought was the engineering sample, not the retail chip. I do plan on doing some gaming; I love shooters like Gears of War so I’d like to purchase a chip that will take me through the next 2 years or so being able to play most/all games. I was going to buy a desktop (Velocity Micro Edge Z15) but with the economy and market going south, it seems smarter to upgrade my laptop for a few hundred than dropping $2k on a new desktop. Based on that, would the T9300 be sufficient or would I be better off spending the extra money for X7800?

When I can free up the funds, I plan an X9100 buying one for my M860tu.

So is ~$450 a good price for an X9100 Engineering Sample? Also, I've been very nervous about buying an ES, but you guys seem to be having good experiences with them. Can I stop worrying now?

As i said in my post, the t8300 or t9300 is more than enough for ANYTHING that you would play on the market. At that point your GPU is going to be the bottle neck of your system WAY before the CPU. Anything over 2.2gHz is technically overkill at this point in the computer world of gaming and will probably be overkill for a year or 3 more.

For as new as the x9100 is yeah 450 is a pretty good price for such a good chip.

But i wouldnt be nervous about ES chips. Alot of the fastest computers in the world use ES chips. Intel isnt going to put out a crappy chip for everyone to stress test to see if everything works like it should...it just wouldnt make sense. Ifyou give the system testers bum chips then you arent getting good results back and its basically a worthless endeavor.

ES chips are great and i would daresay as good if not better than retail chips due to the extensive testing most of them go through. So yes you can stop worrying

You really should install company of heroes and all the patches to get it to 2.301, it has dx10 support, but not out of box.
The reason i ask is because i bought the HP Dragon
    HP Pavillion HDX9494nr
    T8100 2.1Ghz
    4GB DDR2
    512 8800M GTS
    320GB5400RPM
    Vista Premium 64
It runs everything i can throw at it with maxed settings and then some, ie:
    UT3
    COD4
    Flatout UC
    Fear Perseus
    Oblivion
    Double agent,
but company of heroes all maxed out in dx10 is somewhat slow. it runs fine when in dx9 mode
btw, anyone with 8800series notebook card update ur drivers w/ ini mod to 178.13 and get the latest nvidia physx drivers (yeah they have physx support now)

Take a look at the benchmarks towards the bottom of the page. The extent to which the CPU effects gaming depends on many factors, especially the resolution.
