well i got TF2 as a christmas present yesterday from a friend. while i was playing it i expected my fps to be at a minimum of 60 FPS and that it would never drop below 60 FPS, i have everything maxed out. but while i was playing i notice that my fps just averaged aruond 40-50 fps and around 35-40 during big gun fights. is this normal for a 9800mGTS? in source i got an average of 60 FPS during the whole game.

LOL $10 christmas present, tf2 was on sale for 9.99 past weekend, but yea ur good with those fps and its also depend on the server
-
Those drops are probably due to your processor, Gamplay should stay smooth though.
-
that proccesor blows chunks.
need something better then that or any explosions or psyx kills that thing.
gpu is most important but i good cpu is also important -
35-50 is very respectable.

I have the same computer (5793) except with a 2.5ghz processor, and mys fps for TF2 pretty much stays locked at 60.
And I'm using the stock drivers btw -
I have the same system except for the T9300. I guess I will get TF2 since its cheap(I already have it for 360). Will I be able to play all the source mods with TF2?
-
TF2 requires a lot from the CPU
-
yeah it definitely the cpu. i get very poor performance also.
-
thanks for the replies, darn i should of gotten a 2.5 ghz then =\. what do u guys suggest lowering to have the best quality gameplay while maintaining 60 fps?
-
hmmmmmm I get 35-40FPS when I max it out on my laptop.

why dont you overclock your processor? It may help out alot
-
Since it's a CPU bottleneck there's not much you can do aside from overclocking your processor or changing it. I have a T8300 and a 8600M GT and I get around the same fps as you.
You can try typing 'mat_queue_mode 2' into the console, which allows for dual core support. It may increase your fps but may increase stuttering. It is also very buggy and there's a high chance of it crashing. -
yeah the 'mat_queue_mode 2' command works really well for me but you can't atl+tab when you use it because it crashes.
-
you really can't notice anything above 30 fps
-
I beg to differ. On games like Halo or COD5 it makes ALL the difference when I get 60+fps instead of 30. I'm guessing it also makes a difference in TF2 since it's a fast-paced multiplayer fps. For games like Crysis or Need for Speed: Undercover it doesn't matter nearly as much.
And JellyBeans, how does a T8100 "blow chunks"?! I know it's not the fastest cpu out there but it's at least average for a C2D. -
You also have a much lower native resolution than him.
And Johnpimp whatever, don't start this Framerate BS again. -
Why is this said so often? If you can't see the difference when a game is running at 30 and 60 frames per second, you have an eye problem mate.
-
Can't you change the cpu on the sager 5793. It might be a little harder to do but it should be possible.
-
Shouldn't need to, I'd play on 32 person servers at his resolution on my T7200 / 8600M GT just fine. Average 35-50, dips into the low 30's. Drop shadows if you need to drop anything, I think I also dropped model detail down. The unfortunate thing about TF2 is that the performance takes a hit with each subsequent update it seems.

Yes this command works quite well i hear
-
Since when have i EVER start this bs EVER. please tell me i would like to Know seriously. and i really so that MEANS NOT all the time so shut up.
if you look it up. a lot of people CAN't tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps
also there is a difference in fps and refresh rate. to the OP what resolution are you playing in, that could be the problem
-
Anyone who has ever played an online FPS knows 30 from 60, just ask a few snipers.
-
There's a huge freaking difference between 30fps and 60fps for FPS games. 30fps in Counter Strike is just completely unplayable.
-
you can see well above 60 fps.
-
-
The processor does not blow chunks, especially for TF2. Mine plays fine on a P-6831FX. Also PhysX is not used for Valve games. Valve physics and all in the CPU.
-
I'm sorry, but I was under the impression that a Core 2 Duo in 2.0GHz or above was quite a good one? Have I missed something within the past year?
Edit: +1 on what mrsamsa said in the post above. -
I have a 9800m GS and a T9400 OC @ 2.8ghz and my TF2 runs 60FPS everything maxed no AA. They the DOX drivers they may help you out. They usually give you a higher minimum FPS and a lower maximum, but it makes game play much more smooth cause anything over 60fps doesn't matter.
-
I did NOT say that the human eye can only see 30fps
i said alot of people don't notice the difference between 30 and 60 so read EVERy thing i said. if you can then that's fine.
to OP try lowering the resolution and/or make sure you have v-sync off -
it is a good cpu but tf2 doesnt support dual core by default so you dont get the full potential of the cpu.
-
On top of that, the Source engine seems to be the most CPU demanding game engine I've seen. With a T8300 2.4GHz, L4D pushes both cores to their max. Task manager reports my CPU usage to be between 94 - 100% at all times.
-
I'd say that's fairly normal for TF2, big firefights are VERY demanding. With my desktop e6750 (OC'ed to 3.2ghz) and an 8800GTX I would dip into the 40s during huge fights. It will be hard to eliminate this kind of slowdown completely.
-
You sure about that? Your exact quote was-
"you really can't notice anything above 30 fps." -
in Really i meant most people if you interpreted it wrong. i type like i talk
-
Hmm. Well, I guess for you. I for one don't know any gamer who can't tell the difference, but I can't argue with what you see.
-
bloom, or maybe some shader....
if you have AA(anti aliasing) on, you might like to lower/turn it off... -
the game runs fine for me on an ati 3450.
i thought the 9800mGTS was a much more powerful card? -
Much, much more powerful. Much.
-
For the last time, his system is bottlenecked by the CPU, not by the GPU.
-
I disagree, it plays wonderfully on my 1.66 C2D card, while I have experienced some stuttering in L4D, TF2 plays great.
-
Well, would you like to open up your task manager and tell me how much of your first core is being used while playing TF2? (unless you use mat_queue_mode 2)
-
I'm not sure how that would help. I'm not disputing how TF2, L4D or the source engine in general utilize resources, I'm merely saying that his CPU is likely not the cause of the problem, since I run the game very nicely on a slower CPU and a comparable GPU.
-
Well...just saying "it plays wonderfully on my 1.66 C2D card" doesn't tell us much. Maybe you could tell us what kind of fps you are getting in TF2.
-
1)
thanks for all the replies, as to OCing my CPU. i tried using the "setFSB" but sadly it is not compatible with the T8100..... i was wondering if their were any other types of OCing programs i could use, and the BIOS method. i tried doing that but could not find the Advanced Chipset editing thing on my BIOS!!! (sager NP5793)
2)
As for TF2, i just played it again today and to my suprise the FPS dropped down to an all time low of "27 FPS" during a huge fire fight "16v16" i was shocked. i playt at 1680x1050 res with shaders on low and water reflections on simple and 2xAA everything else maxed. il try the console method thing u said earlier and see how much that helps.
3)
i was wondering if i did OC my cpu how much should i OC it to to have 45+ FPS no matter what happened in TF2. NO wonder all of my other games had a below average FPS (CoD5, CoD4, etc) cpu bottle neck........
thanks for all the replies!!!! -
it seems like it's your resolution might be a problem
-
i thought that it was best to play on native resolution, im have wxsga+
-
I thought that resolution was usually GPU bounded. I know I am able to play at max (sans 2x AA) at 1680x1050 and hover around 40-50 FPS. If his rig is really CPU bounded, then resolution won't really matter.
-
2xAA is the problem, not his CPU. My 2.2 GHz T7500 (probably the exact same or slower than his newer T8100) and DDR2 8600M GT got better framerates at 1680x1050, but I wasn't using AA. That's where his performance problem is, not the CPU.
-
he's looking for above 60 fps so it must be the resolution or what ^ said if it's not the cpu
9800mGTS on TF2 - low FPS?
