This is the footnote from AMD's site about Enduro:
AMD Enduro technology requires either an AMD “A” series or “E” series APU or an Intel processor, plus an AMD Radeon™ HD 7000M series discrete graphics configuration and is available on Windows® 7 Professional, Windows® 7 Ultimate, Windows® 7 Home Premium, and/or Windows® 7 Home Basic OS. Linux OS supports manual switching which requires restart of X-Server to switch between graphics solutions. Not all AMD Radeon™ HD 7000M series GPU features and capabilities may be supported on all AMD Enduro technology-enabled components or systems – always check with your component or system manufacturer for specific mode capabilities and supported technologies.
The last bit makes it seem like there is a hardware component like Optimus. Again, I don't have this card nor know enough about it to prove or disprove this.

Do you think the AMD 7970m will work in a Sager NP8170? I assume it will work with a modified Driver.
-
so the 680M will probably not come out till the end of June/early July, be about 100 to 150 bucks more than the 7970, offer maybe a marginal increase in performance and more features. To me it's just not worth the wait, I would just wait till the end of may and get one from xotic or any of the other resellers.(if sagers are your thing of course)
-
it should work as your laptop can handle both GTX 580M and HD 6990M. But no one has actually tried it yet. There could be some complications or not, if you install it, you will be the first to know. (my money is on it working perfectly fine)
-
What did they say their build time is?
-
id like to know this. ive even emailed my seller in th UK to see if they can upgrade the laptop. 6990m is still a beast but the performance that peopl are posting blows the 6990m out of the water
-
build time for 7970 is quoted at late May on their website, not late april
-
No, sorry I meant by the end of May. Isn't it May yet? Haha. I'm leaving the country around the 20th on assignment, and I'm not entirely sure when I'd be back. I'd rather not have to take my old hunk of slag with me.
-
Sad that I'm fairly computer savy but haven't really yanked apart a laptop before. Would be scared of getting an 'old' alienware that this chip/card wouldn't work with and I'd just mess everything up. Maybe I'll just wait till the end of may to pull the trigger.
-
who is your uk seller? im humming and haaaing about who to go with, europe or usa etc....just want an IB with the 7970 or so
-
6990m scores 15000 gpu in vantage overclocked
7990m scores 20000 gpu in vantage stock
I thought that vantage gpu scores were the most accurate gpu performance gauges?
Why does the 7970m get double the performance in games but not double the performance in vantage? I guess it doesn't matter as it is what it is eh
Do you guys think that games of 2012 and 2013 will be very demanding?
Know of any AAA games that might need the 7970m's power so that I can decide if its a worth while upgrade? -
The higher the score, the more it becomes CPU bound. Compare runs set on Extreme and you'll get a more accurate picture.
-
I was thinking that! thanks for the confirmation
Do you think the 6990m will struggle in 2012 at 1080p? or 2013? -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
A 7990m has been confirmed? -
thats a typo i believe.
also 6990M stock scores around 13500-14000 vantage while it can get as high as 17500 Oc'd -
Tried a thread search but nothing came up and I've tried googling this as well.
Amd says this card supports "Enduro" a power saving feature while not doing anything graphics intensive. Has anyone seen this working yet? -
I wonder if anyone can get enduro and drivers working in a clevo p150em
-
An OC'ed 7970M should get over 25,000 easy.
-
Greetings,
l looking for a M18x or M17x r4 to buy .. the question is:
which GPU should i take? GTX 675M or AMD 7970 ? & why ? please guys help with maximum details. thanx
therefore, i NEVER used a AMD before, so i have no idea about them at all. -
You posted this same question in another thread and it was answered there.
-
not yet, there is no official driver yet. everyone who has theirs is running a hacked together driver from a 12.5 beta compliments of an NBR member.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
The lack of driver and app support is actually quite frustrating.
I tried to get OVERDRIVE to appear in CCC...no luck
After cats 12.2, ati removed 2 dll's that third party OC programs need...SO, we added it back and modded the inf. Reinstalled the drivers...no luck
Tried to manually increase MSI AFTERBURNER overclock limits via registry mod. This worked before...but with the 7970m...no luck. Currently Afterburner's max limit is the stock 850/1200 speed of the 7970m. Hence no OC'ing possible yet
tried ATI Tray Tools after adding back the dll's in the driver. It installed, but on the OC menus, the limits are too low and registry mod isn't working (when it did for previous versions of cards)
Tried pulling the vbios via 2 methods...no good.
The new Sapphire Trixx released yesterday doesn't support the 7970m yet
GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
patience my friend, the driver will show up eventually. go get a cup of coffee, your games and continue to benchmark it on everything you can find. you know that extra 10-12% will show up so you can even kick a DESKTOP 580 in the rear soon enough
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
well, it would be a major disappointment if i can't overclock this thing
i guess i'll have to stick with 20k vantage and 6k 3dmark11 for now -
Hmm I would think that there is a official driver that could be provided by dell/allienware since they are taking orders now for the card.
Clevo resellers don't even have sample cards yet it seems, but they might be able to help out with a driver. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
I have the so-called official drivers used in m18x ES R2 Crossfire 7970m testing...but they don't work with the m17x r3
if anyone needs my drivers now...these are installed in my m17x and working fine:
AMD Catalyst 8.97 18 April – 7900 MOD – BenchmarK3D -
Thanks for the work, SlickDude80. I put in my order yesterday with Mythlogic. May 18 ship date estimate...
-
I have also ordered a 7970M from 'upgradeyourlaptop' and it will be shipping around 10th May. Sure, my GTX485M is great but I just couldn't resist the 7970M and I plan to keep my NP8170 for a very long time.
I have my precision screw drivers, anti static wrist strap, arcticlean and ICD7 or MX4 ready. I will probably use MX4 though. Even though I have the GTX 485M, my heavily modded Skyrim often hits 30 fps and lower. -
Hm... not as late as I thought. Was expecting something like May 25-31st lol
-
watch out for your heatsink, no idea what clevo heatsink is, but 485m/580m is not lining up with 7970m, and can be SERIOUS trouble...
-
Yep, that's correct. I ordered a new heatsink specifically for the 7970M along with it. I imagine the 485m heatsink will cause overheating or worse.
Edit: I just noticed in your sig it said 'dead 7970m', what happened to it? -
no idea, we are assuming because of the 580m heatsink... someone of technical knowledge will take a look at it, but I am thinking it shorted out or overheated...
had one nice 3dmark11 run before it collapsed, P5.6k tess on, you are getting one serious beast my friend, enjoy smooth gaming
-
I have a question, why did alienware get first dibs on a 7970 and sager has to wait a full month. Is this some kind of backdoor hand shake deal that alienware worked out?
-
Umm no? What we are having on hand is the QS version.
-
What do you mean? Alienware you have to wait until end of May as well. Look at the build time.
Also the news is that Samsung will come up with a 7970 model as well. I'm leaning towards Samsung at the moment. -
well, some of us just had hands on it
actually it is still here, but will be shipped out first thing monday (maybe tomorrow)
-
I really can't wait to lay my hands on the 670m right now. I want to see just how far it will go as I have enough to order a 7970 when it gets out on mythlogic. I'd like to have both and thoroughly test them with everything before making a real decision, because right now the AMD line cards can't do much for me as I'm in the autodesk software user group and Adobe too, they heavily favor nvidia cards and some functions just wont work on AMD. so my plan was work and business will be on my nvidia and when it's game season for me it will be on AMD
-
Anyone have any idea if the 7970m will work in a dell precision m6600? Got a 8900m firepro now and looking at the 7970m has got me drooling!
-
tru that, so i included a 7970M heatsink in my order with upgradeyourlaptop
its supposed to be the exact same as for the 6970M and 6990M, just that u need to slightly adjust the vRAM pad placement (thats at least what ive been told while placing my order). good thing is that theyre gonna test the card on the HM series before they start shipping
join the club buddy! just that mine will ship on may 6th/7th
i was also planning to keep my lil beast as long as possible, thus the upgrade
btw, are u gonna reuse ur old pads or get new ones? got any recommendations on any with especially high thermal conductivity? id deff prefer 12W/mK or higher, i think ive already seen some going as high up as 16W/mK, cant find them right now tho...
getting excited about the upcoming bench sessions! yeeehaw
-
is this the same driver u put into ur illustrated guide in ur sig? or do they differ in any way? (especially concerning speed
)
oh damn, i didnt realize u had used the 580M heatsink! well THERES ur problem *lol* jk
im glad tho i paid the extra cash for the AMD heatsink...
cheers -
nice! benches pleaaaaase!
-
I ordered the required thermal pads from 'upgradeyourlaptop' too. I don't know anything about thermal pads conductivity though.
I also can't wait to use this GPU and since the GTX485M already had me very impressed, I can only imagine what this one will be like. What thermal paste do you plan to use?
Are you going to use an anti static wrist strap? I always use one of those, imagine killing a new card due to a tiny static discharge! -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Very unlikely to kill a card with static these days...but if it gives you peace of mind, go for it!
-
Why is it very unlikely? Apparently there can be the potential of non obvious forms of damage, but like you say, it is all about peace of mind. Since it is easy to take any potential of static damage out of the equation, it is a very small price to pay to wear a band.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
These drivers are newer...the equivalent of 12.5 betas. It won't be a huge difference from the ones i linked in my guide.
They have put in safe guards to protect vital components now...but please do what you are comfortable doing. I'm not discouraging your use of wearing a band. At the end of the day, peace of mind is everything and a little safety can go a long way towards taht -
Anti static precautions are always advised.
Electronics in general are more resilient than they used to be, but assuming the card is safe from static discharge is foolish.
If I had a nickel for every IT newbie who blew a piece of electronic up in the past 15 years, I'd be a rich man. -
The Dell cards work in the old Clevo HM P-series, but it shuts down quite soon, due to a difference in how the card reports temps to the EC.
We will have to wait for Clevo 7970M (vbios/maybe even card) -
NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
PREMA! why do u have to be such a party-pooper??? damn!
but wait....u sure upgradeyourlaptop offers the dell versions? i just read in another thread that theyre actually using the clevo ones with samsung memory instead of dell version with hynix mem. in any way, i told them to keep me up to date and only ship the card once it got green lights all across the board concerning the P HM series. they already approved it for the X7200 for example, so that gives me hope....
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
I can 100% confirm this...you put a dell 7970m onto a clevo chassis and you have 3 mins before the computer shuts off
eurocom sell clevo cards with clevo vbios's...don't they? You shouldn't have anything to worry about
