Slickdude - perhaps!
Does the desktop 680 have the same memory buswidth as the 680m?
One thing I remember vividly from my old days of being a nerd (riva TNT etc days!) was the impact of buswidth on bandwidth and how much cheaper 64/128 bit cards would benefit from overclocking because the buswidth was such a bottleneck... whereas the 256 bit cards would gain relatively little.
Probably nothing has changed... Im going to take a stab and say the desktop 680 runs a greater buswidth than 680m?

This is exactly what i think. The question then is how much boost to get 6282...this will cut into the OC headroom
Notebookcheck showed the 3dmark11 scores between 7970m and 680m as almost even based on the Schenker laptop they used for the review
The 680m is based on the desktop 670 and they are both running on a 256 bit bus...
The difference is that the desktop card is rated at 170w and has 192GB/sec bandwidth..the 680m is 100w and has 115.2BG/sec -
Please stop acting like you're an authority in GPU drivers. My AMD/Nvidia driver experiences has been the exact opposite of yours. AMD drivers have been crappy for any system running hybrid CF. Yet, the hybrid SLI in my 3 year old SXPS 1340 worked perfectly.
And, please don't call me a fanboy, check my sig.

GTX 670 have a lot lower bandwidth than 7970 yet they perform the same. Kepler isn`t so bandwidth hungry as AMDs GPUs. Maybe because Kepler is optimized for games while GCN is jack of all trades (GPGPU and gaming)
I still don`t think 680M is hindered by the bandwidth. Nvidia promised 20% average over 7970M, that is bandwidth included obviously. Nvidia said 80% performance over 580M, yet Notebookcheck found out that 680M is only 35% faster than 580M....
I`m still thinking something was wrong about the test. -
This might be a daft question, but is it possible that NBC.com was sent a lemon?
I'm not a fanboy either - just very surprised by the results!! -
It seems that this is why Nvidia was originally testing 680M candidates which had lower core counts.
-
I found a different review. It is an Alienware M17x R4 with GTX 680M.
Alienware M17x-R4 review | The Verge
Notebookcheck got 33.8FPS with their review....
Like I say, something must be bloody wrong with notebookcheck`s test -
My guess is the Nvidia Boost, I remember a reseller saying that Sager has that option to their cards, but who knows, also even if it is there the heating problem that some people reported with the 7970m may be affecting this feature as well and not allowing the card to boost thus showing its raw performance. Also there is no official review from NBC although the numbers should come from preliminary tests… At last we have to keep waiting for official review and hope that they test everything like the boost feature, heat, power consumption so we can have a better picture of what might be going on…Patience people and in the end all we have are preorders and I am not sticking to the 2nd place…

Kingpinzero ROUND ONE,FIGHT! You Win!
If it turns out that I was right about Cleo's having problem with Optimus and 680m (much like some enduro and 7970ms) I will laugh so hard.
But It can't be true because I'm not trustworthy, respectable and a donkey. -
On Clevo machines, Enduro did NOT affect performance. Only Alienware had that problem.
Although, I too would have a good chuckle if Optimus was causing the lowered performance results. -
That was a really crappy review. Dell PR are idiots.
Sent from my GT-N7000 -
Both measurements are worthless for comparison, unless they were run in the exact same gameplay area.
Only two forum users going head to head, with identical machines, will show the truth. -
So is it 100% set that 7970m is more powerful than 680m?
-
No. Not until Slickdude gets his 680M for comparison.
-
Tyranids, whenever I look at your pic, I feel the urge to play Metro
28nm ftw, what are we even talking about, both 7970m and 680m are blessings upon us, let us stop arguing which one is better and start playing
-
When is it due?
-
Well when it's official that 7970m is more powerful, 680m's price will def come down
-
nVIDIA does not lower prices. Not now, never, they have too big a income.... too good a reputation
-
Have no idea, but I'm 99% sure he'll end up with the card first again.
-
With Observer here throws the same ugly gloating post every two pages and those of you that keep on disproving and downplaying every review that is even somewhat positive about the card no matter what, I can't read this thread any more. What do you have to be so maliciously happy for? Did anyone tell you your 7970M was crap when you bought it? Shame on you.
-
Yeah, Clevo having Optimus issues and Alienware having Enduro issues.
Great work
But then again, Alienware is pricing the 680M $100 more than Clevo, so perhaps Alienware have some secret deal with extra juicy cards from Nvidia
Yeah true, but you should agree that Alienware`s and Clevo`s get two different results should raise some alertness about the Notebookcheck review.
Yes, really looking forward to his last excellent report on 7970M:
"I feel that Skyrim runs super smooth on Ultra settings in Skyrim"
"AMD is crushing Nvidia. Everyone should buy one"
He showed real in depth analysis
No seriously, we need a review from Anandtech, Techpowerup and sites like that. They test the GPUs at every single resolution/settings, what exactly power consumption they have, measurments of temperature etc etc.
Not much mention of performance there really
-
i do believe you are wrong. they dropped the price of the 580m to with in 50 dollars of the 6990m.
so your statement is wrong.
-
They could easily justify the higher price for some potential buyers by mentioning PhysX and Cuda, but i could probably build myself a kickass desktop with a GTX 680 for the same price as the notebook card here in Norway.
Not that im planning to do it, i love my portability. -
Bus width the same, just heavily lowered clocks. Basically 60% desktop speed.
680m 115GB/s
Desktop 670 192GB/s -
Coming from his 580M over to the red side and giving accurate FPS that would later be confirmed in a week by other 7970M owners... yeah I'll trust Slickdude just fine tyvm.
-
I'll trust Slickdude as well. He comes across, to me at least, as being very objective and honest. Besides, what would he have to gain by lying?
I'm anxiously awaiting his 680m review out of curiosity. I already have a 7970m and won't care one way or another if the 680m is slightly faster or slower. These fast cards benefit us all. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
What? Can you point to where i typed that? Please show me the post where i typed that
Thanks for your confidence Skittles...i'll do what i can, but given the current supply situation, i don't know if I'll be the first this time around. All depends on the availability of these cards. -
Just stick with the 7970M Slickdude. It is obviously meant for you
-
I don't see the point in arguing until 680M are in the hands of some users and, personally for me, see some analysis by Anandtech, Bit-Tech etc.
-
Yeah Agreed hula. I think Anandtech mentioned that they would do a review with the Alienware with 680M
-
The wait is killing me...
-
Know the feeling...
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
what i'm hoping for is a test with 2 identical Alienware m17x r4's...with the only difference being the video cards
Then run set benchmarks that can be easily repeatable. -
Off topic, does anyone else that uses tapatalk see 5 empty pages on this thread?

SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
yes, i have to go to the last page, then back 5 pages to get to the last post -
Yes that would be optimal for shure.
-
I still don't get why some didn't trust Slick in the first place, what does he have to gain from lying outright to everybody on the forum for the favor of a company he has nothing to do with? He has 670 SLi god damn it! better than all nvidia fans out there! (including me
)
7970m is a bliss. period -
Optimistic Prime Notebook Evangelist
Yeah, I'll chime in on this one as well. It isn't just this thread, but some others too. It has something to do with the forum's software, so don't worry about it.
When it comes to Slick, he's a good guy and definitely trustworthy. His SLI 670s play some mean Pokemon, too.

It seems that you guys are killing time by arguing until more benchmarks come out .

^^ oh someone found the answer to life...

pretty much so..

Take a look to this small review of an Alienware M17x with the GTX 680M: Alienware M17x Gaming Notebook, Amped with Ivy Bridge and GeForce GTX 680M, Hands-On - YouTube
The video starts at the minute 7:05 when the guy mentions the FPS when running a benchmark in Batman: Arkham City at Ultra Settings in Full HD.
You can clearly see at the top left of the Alienware screen:
Minimum 8
Maximum 71
Average 57
The results concords with the NBC results, 59 on average.
We still need to wait for other sites to review the graphics card, but until now that video could mean that NBC results are correct. -
Sad but true...
-
"1920X1080, FXAA set to High, High IQ, All DX11 effects On/High, NVIDIA PhysX On/High - 57FPS" it´s in comments. Physx on. Not sure if that affects score...
-
Look at yourselves. Just wanting the 680m to beat 7970m so you pay $300 extra. Pathetic.
-
I personally only care about performance per watt and I reckon amd just about won this round.
-
Fixed. As a current owner of 7970M CFX. There's around 20+ titles that don't work with CFX and no driver date listed. AMD is no where to be seen on the matter either. Plus their drivers will all be betas and leaks. Big turn-off.
-
lol ObserverLin you with PCSPECIALIST u.k.? I ask because ... commercial break ... I had driver issue with my 7970M and within 24 hours I sent 5 questions to their support and received 8 answers lol

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
680m benchmarks interesting. -
I just did a comparison and the 7970m wins against the 680m on the majority of games on top setting. Amazing how powrful the 7970m is as it is one of the least power hungry cards I have seen for a 100w tdp. I'm thinking know a 7870m should outperform 675m and be able to use a whole 120w adaptor to use without any issues. AMD I reckon win performance per watt round which at the end of the day means there gpu architecture is better.
AMD 7970m vs GTX 680m
