At the rate things are going, it will be Middle to end of summer before any real high-end parts hit the street.. This is one of the slowest launches of tech i have seen in a long time.

Seems like everything is rolling in slow motion with both IB and the new GPUs..

IB is because Intel can afford to drag their feet.
AMD? Who knows what they are up to on both ends.

    Excruciating slow... :(

Don't kill the messanger (me) ;)

According to 慕容蛛蛛, our Chinese friend who brought us all the Clevo leaks:

    "The AMD HD7970M 2GB, GDDR5 256BIT performance is similar

to the GTX675M. Delivery is expected end of May, early June!"

Prema if thats the case then it will be interesting to see the power consumption of the 7970m vs the gtx660m performance per watt.

    I'm hardly worried about that.
The power consumption will probably be similar, or within a certain margin that sets them apart, but hardly anything drastic (although, until the new gpu's completely roll out, we won't know for certain).
Both companies products seem to be in a more or less same/similar range either way.

Apart from that, if people are buying now and are aiming for the high-range gpu's on Nvidia part, then they would be better off getting the 5xx series (since there should be minimal or no change there to begin with - especially if they will be lower in price).
Although I also agree that until mid-summer, there probably won't be anything new in the high-end mobile department.
Ultimately, those gpu's can be undervolted on stock clocks in the first place which will automatically produce lower temps and reduce power consumption - of course, we aren't talking Kepler performance/watt efficiency, but still more effective than stock.
    :D

The 7990M will magically be comparable to the 680M upon release.

It will be deeply disappointing if AMDs new architecture can`t beat the last one, even if they have reduced the power draw by 25W.

It doesn't make sense that the 7970m would just "compete" with the 580m/675m, as the 6990m was already neck and neck with it this past year. For Amd not to have a significant gain going from the 6xxx series to the 7xxx series with the GCN architecture is highly unlikely, as the desktop chips already saw notable gains in performance, and especially in performance per watt. Even if the 7970m was just a 75w card, it should still massacre the 580m and compete with a 560ti..

Yeah I think the 6970m is being underestimated. AMD had a pretty good improvement with the HD 7970 over the 6970, no reason why they can't do that in the mobile sector.

If one directly compares the lowest GCN card, the AMD HD 7850, to the GTX 580M, which will have better performance?

again I am saying (and everybody is against it), if nvidia rebadges their previous top product (rebadging a mainstream thing can make sense for low end companies), this means they have serious R/D problems with TSMC (which we already know), probably they are directing the low amount of production into desktop (680) where it matters.. there will eventually be cards better than current top ends, but I don't see it happening before end of summer / fall (which was precisely the reason I bought my lappy in the past fall, which was the right call ;)), and I still don't believe 7970m will beat 580m hands down, it maybe similar in performance, can beat in metro 2033 but cannot in BF3.. also nvidia 300 drivers will give a serious performance advantage to nvidia cards over amd (considering new and better performing FXAA embedded into nvidia control panel).. especially I still cannot see 7990m also performing that crazy well people expecting (otherwise why the hell amd is not saying anything? how long has it been since we have 7870 already? 1 month, why are we not hearing anything?), 680m will bring miracles, but not now (maybe not even this year)..

    Why should that be?

    ( perm-link to that post)
The 675m = rebrand 580m (roughly the same, may 2% more performance).. and that one was on the same performance level like the 6990m

So why should AMD make their new flagships as good as their old ones?
especially because of the new 28nm-architecture, if they want to sell their stuff they wanna present their new technique as good as possible (with as much performance gain as possible), don't they?

What if they manage to do what Nvidia did? The 675m is only just as good as the 580m, but significantly cheaper. If AMD makes the 7970m just as good as the 6990m but at 60% of the price, it should dominate the market. It would be a logical move as long as the 7990m is released not too long after the Nvidia 680m. All I know is, AMD (and Intel, while I'm at it) are LATE! I need a new notebook!

    I must say this:

    The source says GCN.

AMD Radeon HD 7970M can easily come from HD7950, albeit in cut down form and lowered clocks. 1536 cores means it is cut down by another cluster. TDP reduction is definitely possible.

HD 7950M has similar specs as the HD 7870 though... 1280 cores.

Source is from IT 168, the same chinese source that has the GTX 680M and the HD 7970M in the Alienware machines they took out of the factory.

If source is not to be trusted, GTX 680M source, being the same source, should not be trusted too.

Original source: ÏÂÒ»´ú¸ß¶ËÏÔ¿¨È«¹æ¸ñ¼°ÐÔÄܱ©¹â£¨AMD Radeon HD 7970M vs NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M£©_´÷¶ûAlienwareÍâÐÇÈËÂÛ̳

So... if those sources turn out to be accurate, then AMD high-end segment essentially beats Nvidia's old and new gpu's in TDP while offering 30% higher performance vs the 675M and equal performance for 680M?

Wouldn't this mean (if accurate), that AMD's new gpu's are more efficient than Kepler?

Also, I really don't understand why Nvidia simply didn't reduce the manuf. process on it's 580m gpu.
It would be a re-badge yeah, but they could have upped their clocks in the process and reduce TDP to have at least... something.

An HD7870 core fully unlocked will be more efficient than a partially disabled 7950 core.

As it is the 7870 gets pretty close to a 7950 already.

768SP for 7750M doesn't make much sense. Full Cape Verde has 640SPs. Full Pitcairn has 1280. How do you get 768 ? They'd have to disable a lot of CUs.

wow it would be nice to have such a powerful 7970m, implies a crazy 7990m (which also falls in line with the 685m rumor), maybe 7970m rumors are wrong after all (similar performance with 580m), mxm3.0 slot is good news :)

a ton of places started to leak 7970m news and the consensus is that it indeed has 1536 shaders and 65W TDP
