as much as your right, i read numerous times it was to be the direct competitor to the 8600m gt, and the hd 2600 was supposed to compare to the 8600m gs....now this was probably a ploy by ATI to make their cards look better but this is what was said.

Well, you may be right. But when you look at the desktop versions. The HD 2600 Pro is slightly cheaper than the GF 8600 GT. The HD 2600 XT is more expensive than both but is still cheaper than the 8600 GTS, albeit only slightly. These cards seem to perform in a hierarchical fashion in adjacent to their prices. HD 2600 Pro < GF 8600 GT < HD 2600 XT < GF 8600 GTS.

It doesn't follow the laptop version's comparison table despite not-so-even performance. HD 2600M Pro (I'll just use the 'M' to denote it as 'Mobility' just like the GF 8xxxM series), HD 2600M XT, HD 2700M follow the same pattern as the GF 8600M GS, GF 8600M GT and the GF 8700M. The HD 2700M might as well be the GF 8700M's competition.

P.S. It was funny reading wolfraider's losing (and pointless) arguements regarding the classifications of memory that the GPUs use.

HD 3800 should be out soon. 55nm and supports new lighting and anti-aliasing techniques along with DX10.1. Wonder how long till we see it in mobile form?

OK... Screw the idea of getting a HD 2600 XT GDDR4. I'm getting a Geforce 8800 GT instead. It's only $200-250 dollars. It thrashes the HD 2900 XT and GF 8800 GTS and it's almost as poweful as the GF 8800 GTX for half the price. And its power consumption peaks out at only 200 watts on load!!! I'm so damn glad I held myself from buying a PC three months ago with a GF 8600 GT.

As much as I love the All-In-Wonder Radeons (and the fact that I need it), the performance to dollar ratio of the GF 8800 GT is too good to pass. I'll probably just get a cheap separate capture card of decent quality... I just hope there's such a thing.

I'm pretty sure the HD2700 is just a renamed HD2600XT. According to Fudzilla, ATI is getting rid of the Pro and XT suffixes, and is just going to assign higher numbers to denote higher performance parts.

I believe that the Radeon 2600XT was the competitor to the 8600Gt with slit performance this thing is supposed to compete with the 8700GT.

No, the specs are the same. They do that for cards based on the same chip. What you really need to know are things like clock speeds, which of course they don't tell you.
