Congratulations, you got yours early. The m5790 looks like a beautiful machine from the pictures.
While that's true, I think Alienware added the Nvidia option and kept the base price of the laptop the same. :(

Has anyone tried gaming with the X1900? I own a M170 with a 7800GTX myself. But I can never imagine that 7900GS would perform better than the X1900 in higher resolutions. Overall I think you'll get smoother frame rates with the X1900 than the 7900GS, hell my 7800GTX struggles with Oblivion, though other games works like a charm. The 3Dmark scores says nothing about the actual game performance of the card. Try to run some benchmarks with Oblivion and other demanding games at native resolution instead and see what you get, instead of comparing 3D Mark scores.

@mastha212: maybe it will be possible to install the latest catalyst drivers once Patje supports the X1900 with his modtool. It has always worked fine for me (tried it on a 9600 and a X700). Here is a link to his modtool: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/

Oblivion is the worst game to benchmark on, since it's coded in a way that gives even the most optimized systems trouble with running it smoothly. Even new 8800 gtx systems will not run oblivion as smooth as they should (although it's still pretty smooth, they still hitch now and then).

While it is certainly possible the x1900 runs better in higher resolutions than a stock 7900GS, I would definitely prefer the latter since it costs almost half as much, overclocks much better (in fact, overclocks easily to GTX levels...which would make it superior to the x1900) and has better drivers and support at this time.

True JacktheCrow, I own a desktop killer system with a E6600 2GB Kingston HyperX 800MHZ DDR2 and a 8800GTX, sure Oblivion runs very smooth on it, but it still hitch up now and then. So the game is surely not optimized at all for the PC.

Yep, Half Life 2 is a great program to bench though. FEAR too. Oblivion is sure a bad optimized game for the PC.

Build quality and screen are really good, materials are high quality, no dead pixels or something. But noise is totally diffrent story. I think (at least I can't remember anything else) it's the noisest laptop I have ever tested. Even @ idle is loud. Only good news is that won't change during gaming ;)

I dunno if you guys have read it but if you go here sub division has a review of the Alienware M5790 and if you scroll down to the end of the review and i quote he says

**Final Note.. As of this writing with these Drivers, my 3dMark06 Bench markwas around 4500.**

but further down the forum he does a 3dmark05 and gets a score of 7118

Has he got the pcmark mixed up with the 3d mark? or is it by chance that the alienware x1900 performs better than the FS in 3dmark06 but not as much in 3dmark05

nope, i ran 3dMark05 and 06 and those were my scores...

Last night I got the Cat 7.2's installed and working on the M5790..

    *NOTE**

ATi has ONCE AGAIN, Left off the x1900 from the INF fies in the mobility driver, so you just cant download them and install them.. It looks like they are either trying to foret the x1900 exists, are backed up with vista BS, or are pushing the x2300 that i just read about today...

Either way, I force fed my machine the 7.2's (it thinks its an x1800 now, but running at full x1900 default core speeds) and the new CCC is nicer.

I am on vacation down in North Carolina returning saturday, and I plan to put the rest of my games on here (right now only have CS:S/DOD:S) and bench some moer (hd tach etc...)..

I'll say this for some interesting benches i ran this morning on the 7.2 cats...

    CS:S STRESS TEST:

    (Set fps_max 500 in console)

@ 1024x768, no aa/af, trilinear filtering, everthing else at highest setting: AVERAGE FPS: 208.77

@1024x768 6x msaa, 16x AF Same thing as above (everything max): 138.71 FPS

    @1920x1200 no aa/af etc... 97.91 FPS

TO say i am pleased with these scores is an understatement... Now when i get home and i see the 7.2's onmy 1950pro 512 to make a comparison, i may start playing games only on the friggin laptop!!! lol

Thanks for the benchmark scores SuBDivisions; that certainly is impressive performance. I always enjoy using high-end cards.

    These are results for a Go7900GTX 512MB with a C2D T7600 and 2GB RAM:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3260&review=WidowPC
So, the MR X1900 is definitely behind the top-end Nvidia cards but is more than capable of playing the latest games at eye candy galore settings. :)

You would have thought that for what they claim as the 'The worlds fastest consumer graphics' that they would want to support it asap...lol
Thats some good scores! Its kinda of a shame that it isnt more powerful than the 7900gtx but im glad that its still a great performer.. Just out of curiosity what were the default clock speeds?

well im glad that the 3d mark06 was that high :) what drivers where you using when you got that score?

hopefully when i get mine i can push out some benchmark results aswell

You got 1gb RAM aswell dont you?
