Nice machine, and Ivy Bridge / 28nm GPU's would be a good tech update. But yeah tech does obsolete quite quickly. I'm hoping to get 3 years out of mine, and hoping something that blows away the 6970m or 485m fits and works in my MXM IIIb socket. A GPU upgrade middle of 2012 (or later) should hopefully give me a solid year or more out of the machine.

As far as CPU, looks like Ivy Bridge will work with Sandy Bridge with BIOS update, so keeping fingers crossed there too. Would be nice to spend only $600-$700 for an update than to shell out another $2K for a new laptop.

Seeing the phrase "MXM 3.0" made me very happy. Hopefully the high-end GPUs follow suit.

I am pretty sure there will be a revision of the MXM standard pretty soon in order to allow for Optimus cards to work with MXM slots as well.

do you guys think the ridiculous price of the 485M will drop once the 6970M is out? (as far as clevo is concerned...)

Doesn't the new M17x have Optimus support for the GTX 460M config?

It's hard to price competitively when your card costs a lot more to produce.

am not saying it should come down close to the price of the 6970M, that's not possible. I am just hoping for a slight price drop; like a +$399 for the upgrade cost over a 460M instead of the current +$495.

Asking for close to a 20% discount on an upgrade price is a tall order, especially since it's top of the line and niche demand remains high.
