It's the drivers, try another one. If you go back to windows, you will see the "nvl______ drivers has crashed " alert.
-
It use to say that a long time ago, but it doesn't say that anymore. Also i tired multiple drivers and it happens to all of them.
-
but while im at it, could you please specify, where could i find those new drivers? by the way, im using xp on xps1530. thanks a lot. -
laptopvideo2go.com
I don't have any problems on 177.35 -
ah... im considering to reinstall vista again, only to be able to play games normal again, without that framerate drop every minute. but in other hand, not all games work on vista.. argh...
hey, i installed 171.16 drivers (16904.exe) and at first the colors were wacky on battlefield2, but now it seems ok, framerate increased by 10-20 fps maybe, gpu temperature 77, and no lags yet. please god let it be ok.
ok, my last edit to this post. so the problem still persists. the only difference, that fps drops not to 80->20 like earlier, but 90->30. new drivers only increased FPS, but DID NOT solve the problem.. lets continue... -
I have an HP dv6500t with the GeForce 8400M GS.
I've noticed my temps have been pretty stable. Doing "basic" stuff like watching videos, browsing, chatting, your average "work", my GPU is pretty much pegged at 49c. When I play games it goes up to 64c and stays there. I played GRID for 3 hours checking in between races and it never moved up or down from that 64c mark.
As soon as I was done it slowly made its way back down to 49c again.
I'm not worried. My temperatures are stable and extremely low compared to many others. -
-
From my personal experience (and what I read from others), the random performance drops could actually be your GPU downclocking itself because it is getting too hot.
Check your temps with HW Monitor to see how high it gets when it drops in performance. -
The problem is that that shouldn't happen at 80C but only when the temperature is critical.
-
-
I'm using the 177.35 from laptopvideo2go.
I just spent the time from my last post over in the HP forum here until now playing GRID and UT3 monitoring my temps.
My CPU peaked at 63c and my GPU peaked at 61c.
Maybe my HP is a freak and runs unusually cool? hah -
You play Grid and UT3 on an 8400m GS?
-
-
Never heard of a G89 core. That would mean there was an 8900 somewhere...
-
You get max 61 C
I get max 99 C
What's wrong with this? -
-
8800m has yet to pass 68C, after 2+ hours of Crysis.
-
Yes. It runs them pretty good too. I just obviously have to play at medium settings at somewhat lower resolutions.
I certainly don't mind! This system was a warranty replacement for for an older system with integrated graphics.
I was about to buy an Xbox360 too. But this showed up, I got curious and downloaded the demos for the PC versions of the games I wanted to play on the Xbox and it played every single one as long as I kept the settings realistic. So I sure don't mind.
I even hook it up to my HDTV using the HDMI output.
Sure, it doesn't look as good as a higher end system would or even the Xbox360. But it looks "good" and my HDTV's ATI video processor does a great job of scaling the video and all of that.
So yeah, its good enough to hold me over until sometime later this year when I'll pick up one of the newly announced 60GB Xbox360s. -
Well, at least it plays. My 8400m GT OC'd barely handled UT3 at 1024x768, medium settings. Never tried Grid...
-
Bo@LynboTech Company Representative
I would say Grid is nowhere near as detailed as UT3
you can ramp the settings up, and make it look all shiny and nice
graphically it serves its purpose, its a great if unforgiving game
grid that is
as for the question of the older core, I dont know if it was called G89 but notebooks containing an 8800M GTX are running the second gen G92 core which was a die shrink and memory config change to the previous generation
Notebook 8800M GTX = Desktop 8800 GT 2nd gen. -
i did some researh about droping fps. i tried to downclock gpu so it wont heat too much and not cause fps drop. (60 steady fps is better than jumping 80 to 20). but it did not help.
what else, that there was no downclocking of gpu when fps drop occured. though temperatures reached 85c on gpu, and also on cpu! i might think, maybe it's not the graphic card problem, but processor ? (darn, i didn't watch the cpu frequency, need to repeat again, watching cpu).
yup. the problem is not in the gpu, but cpu.. so graphic card is ok, thank god. now what to do with that cpu temperatures ? my xps1530 is with 9cell baterry, so it is lift up a bit, and air has good circulation underneath. my room temperature is 25c, i think its not much.
i found some articles about underwolting. i managed to reduce max temperature by 5 degrees. if this will solve the problem, i'll report after some testing.
well ok, max temperature playing bf2 is now 85c. so far no downclocking and droping frames. so far problem solved. but i think 85c is too much for a cpu, right ?..
ok, enough answering my own questions
http://users.erols.com/chare/elec.htm
for my cpu T7700 max allowed temperature is 100c. im happy. good luck solving your problems, im out. -

Starting a new rumour : all new ati gpu-s use the same materials that nvidia had problem with
Of course high end notebook gpu-s have problems, user want quiet and fast pc-s. And that can't be done, have to give up on 1 or the other.
Ppl overclock, they block went holes, the outside room temp is higher then
req. in the spec.....
Well this rumour is good for ati and notebook makers, if you look at it it's got hard to sell
the new product since most ppl just fine with the current models.
By the way about ati (amd) look at their stock price 6$ and falling
And it's not rumour that high level ppl thinking about quiting from amd -
haha... yes i confirm sama98's information. It's absolutely true!
-
But then the inquirer is right about all the g84 and g86 using the same asic circuitry and substrate since nvidia never changed anything in their batches because knowing from the analysts.
-
uh oh .. i just bought my hp pavilion 6725 with 8400m gs .. damn i don't want to burn alive .. tho i did the bios update .. but i have one question what if i installed modded drivers like the 175.xx driver that is non hp
and i also disabled the powermizer atm will that make my notebook burn to hell -
i was just about to buy myself an Acer Aspire 5920G-602G25Mi - Core 2 Duo T7500 / 2.2 GHz - RAM 2 GB - HDD 250 GB - GF 8600M GS - Vista Home Premium for 600 euros (brand new from a shop) which i thought is an excellent price for this kind of hardware. Before i invest my 600 euros i did a mini research on the net trying to found any known faults or problems of this specific unit. Then i bumbed on the NVIDIA scandal. I can only describe it as a scandal because the little info the company has outed can be only scandalous. When you know that you have a gpu that is bound to fail it is like a terminal disease. You can try but at the end death is inevitable. Now if this "death" is going to be inside or outside the warranty period that is irreleavant. Things like that should be treated faulty or not with the same measure RECALL!!! Of course the only reason they are not doing that is that it doesnt have to do with the security of people (like a fuel hose in a car) but it can harm only financially. And that makes me furious.. Should there be explosion of the gpus due to thermal increase to see some action. Btw no i am waiting to see what nvidia will have to say...i expect a cover up and i am in search of a notebook using ATI gpu.
-
Looks like nVidia denied that all of the 8400 and 8600 chips are faulty. Article: http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/07/16/nvidia.denies.gpu.rumor/

Vash the Stampede Notebook Consultant
heres my sony reply about the email towards the defective cards and if mine was effected:
and heres a screen shot of my GPU:
-
And? They just said it doesn't affect everyone. It's been confirmed on the Asus G1S but that's all for now I believe.
But he does mention drivers, did you include that in your inquiry? The drivers are fine. -
Vash the Stampede Notebook Consultant
they replied in like 12 hours...
iam still skeptical about the whole thing. I want see some huge Nvidia "OK" list. -
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/07/09/nvidia-g84-g86-bad
A huge chunk of their laptop parts (which also includes a large number of macbooks) are defective. -
you are little late. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=270732

Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
So if we keep our laptops running 24/7 everthing will be fine? , were all going to hell!
-
Whats actually wrong with these defect cars, mines normal I dont get high temps or anything...
-
nvidia used wrong material for packaging, so the GPUs might have heat cycle problem.
-
Nvidia confirmed it was only a certain part (probably revision A2) that are defective. The 9500M GS and the latest 8700M GT laptops are running cool.
-
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
Damm , I have an revision A2 , But it`s a desktop card so easy to swap!
-
And that desktop cards aren't affected.
-
-
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
yes they are!
-
-
That's actually really cool.
-
-
I don't think so. My 8600M GT boots at 45C
-
-
My 8600 runs at like 50's idle, if not 60C and 70's-89 under load.
Depending on game.
52C as highest is nice. -
My 9500M GS got to 62 when testing it with nVidia's stress tool. Normally... it's under 50 degrees Celsius.
-
Damn that's cool.....are you in a 15.4 or a 17''?
-
so y r all these "defective cards" running cool?????
All nVidia G84 and G86 cores are defective?!
