I'd like to share some findings from my experiences in past few days with 163.71beta and official one. The performance gain is noticeable in some games I tried. I got big FPS hit whenever having big dust around me in FEAR, however with 163.71 driver I noticed the performance hit isn't as much as before. In guild war I got peak 60+ FPS and low 30+ FPS with big fight on screen on resolution 1680x1050 eveyrthing max and FSAA 4x. I was truly suprised becuase with overclocked 158.19 driver my FPS can sometimes ditch to around 30FPS as well. I'm gonna stick with this 163.71 official driver for a long time :)
There's no change in 3dmark 06 score for me.

Im still with the gd old 158.45's... I'd luv to try the 163.71's :(

    1) I download the beta's extract them then quit the installation.
    2) I download the inf. file and copy n replace it.
    3) go to control panel n device manager, display adapters.......
    4) browse: choose the modded inf.
    5) looks like its working then i just get the error page!

    Anything i missed?

Swoley, I just tried your drivers. I gained almost 100 points in 3DMark06 (3517 from 3420) on my Dell Vostro (8600M GT). My old drivers were 163.44, aka Bioshock drivers.

I never tried the default 163.71's, so there may have been a small increase in performance anyway...but I'm willing to bet that 98% of the increase is your doing. :D

Thanks, keep up the good work!

I'm sorry if this is kind of a stupid question, but this is my first laptop and I'm kind of lost. I'm so used to just downloading a set of drivers from ATI on my desktop, and not worrying about things like this. But I see everyone mentioning Powermiser settings, and all this other stuff in their control panels, but mine has nothing like that! Is there a different control panel I can download somewhere? I've got the 163.69 drivers from laptopvideo2go, and I've tried nvTweak, and nvTray apps, but neither of these have those settings either. I've also downloaded nvTune fom Nvidia's website, and still no help there.

I don't think my 8600GT is going into a low power state when the laptop is not plugged in, and it's draining my battery awfully fast.

Am I missing something here? I really hate sounding like a newbie like this, but like I said, I've never owned a laptop before. I've been building desktops for myself and others for years, and never had this issue. lol

This is what my CP looks like, but there are none of the Powermiser settings or anything there that I can find.

u didn't use the modded inf did u? get it from laptopvideo2go and then just put it in the folder with ur drivers. it will override previous inf file. That inf contains special features for our moible versions. after doing that, uninstall (in safe-mode) the current drivers with driver cleaner pro from guru3d.com. after that, just use have-disk method described on laptopvideo2go and install drivers with the new inf file. hope that helps.

Yes, I did use the modded .inf file from the site. I followed their exact instructions. The drivers work fine. I scored a 3450 in 3dmark06, which seems to be about normal from what I've seen around here. The only problem is that my Control Panel is not showing some options that it apparently should be.

well, that's the only control panel from the drivers. as far as mine goes, i have the mobile option there (in between the display and video settings menus), which u don't have(judging from the screen provided). that's why i inferred that u've used the regular nvidia drivers for the desktop version of 8600.... my bad.

    I have the same problem.

Under xp it was there, under vista it isnt. I remember reading somewhere that Vista doesnt have the powermizer option, its incorporated into windows vista power options, so if you set the power option to power saver the gfx card will also tone down

Just so you guys know I have made some hybrid 163.74 and 163.75 drivers but there was absolutely no difference in performance so...I scrapped em! I am going to wait on the next major release and create a hybrid set.

nah, they are just certified (non-beta) drivers released by our beloved nvidia lol
it's been a while since it released any drivers for its mobility line tho....however, laptopvideo2go has the new mobile drivers out, but people say they r no good, so just stick to 163.xx series ;)

Sorry for the late reply, didn't see your post till today. No, my 8600M GT is at default speeds. I've thought about overclocking (and from what I hear this card does it quite nicely 8) ) but haven't attempting anything yet.

Note btw that my score was on 1280x800 (default res on free version of 3DMark on a widescreen monitor). Could be at least part of the reason for a score difference..

I really feel that my 8600gt isn t as good as it should be...
Last time i tried to play lost planet and i add to put the lowest graph to get decent fps (20!) is it normal ? I just did a 3dmak06 basic edition test and i got 3743 (1280x1024) and no anti-aliasing.
Edit: I use a 20inch external monitor....don t know if that change something..

That score is what you should be getting, I also get the proper 3dmark06 score I should be getting with my 8600M GT ddr2

but I also get the same feeling as you that it isnt as good as it should be (based on what other people are reporting)

dont know whats wrong with it, some one claimed running ut3 demo with it at specified settings and getting 40 fps....i tried those same settings and I get 25 fps....

My 8600M GT is around 3200 in 3dmark06 basic since its ddr2 which is less powerfull than your one in the asus g1s.

Settings were 1440 x 900 , post processing vivid, under advanced the first slider at 100 %, the second and third sliders set to 3.

Im very paranoid about this stuff, when something isnt working like it should lol

dont know if its a software thing, gfx card faulty or nothing wrong at all !

1440 x 900 is going to take considerably more processing power than 1280 x 800... Your FPS is pretty accurate for your resolution.

Those are the exact fps I'm getting with my G1s as well. Even though I personally think it could dish out more with those settings.

I'm in the process of updating to 163.75 drivers to see if that helps.

I have an Asus G1S with the 8600M GT DDR3. It came with the 7.15.11.119 driver dated 4/28/07 and I tested it with a 3DMark06 score of 3804.

I updated to the nVidia 163.67 driver and saw my 3DMark06 score slide to 3660. I also had a problem with my games now being cut off on the sides (there is 1.5" blacked out on each side of the screen). I rolled back the drivers but the problem is still there. Any idea on how to fix the problem?

    ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I wasn't able to change the flat panel scaling with the 7.15.11.119 driver. I upgraded to the 163.44 driver and was able to change the scaling, however I don't understand the drop in 3DMark06 scores...

For the side issue go to nvidia control panel go to flat panel scaling and then change it to nvidia scaling (just that not the fixed aspect ratio) and apply.

I had to roll back the driver to 163.44 from 163.76 in order to be able to change the flat panel scaling (before it was all grayed out and had a fixed aspect ratio fixed).

I was better off keeping the original Asus drivers dated 4/28/07, as the newer nVidia ones actually decresed my 3DMark06 score.

    Hey Guys,

Sincere apologies to the mods if my thread does not belong here! Well I recently (last week) got my Vostro 1500 shipped in, after recommendation from this site only...After surviving with the headphone buzz, the DVD drive noise and the likes, I am still alive!

My rig has the NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 8600M GT 256MB version, and Windows XP pro installed (by me later i.e.)

I would like to know the best possible performance / and if possible stable drivers out there for this baby. I have heard the DELL drivers are crappy to even start using OOB.

I guess this should be a no brainer for the guys out here!

Do let me know your inputs guys!

    Cheers!

Actually Lithus, it appears that the 167 drivers are based off a release newer than 163.44. Don't know exactly how new yet, but they're not extremely old like the 165 release was.

Several users are indeed reporting that these drivers can overlock. But does anybody know what driver they are based on, and how old that driver is? Anything later than the Bioshock drivers would be killer!

Um guys, all you have to do is read the .inf file first and check the date which is 10/09/07. Then read the modes.txt nightly build file and check the date which is 10/09/07. These are the newest drivers out.

I interpreted them as a remake of an older driver.

"Abig thanks to GDPHK for leaking these driver.
They one day older than 156.72 but a from the same series as 165.01 released so long ago now."
