I want the 880MX or 980M to show up so bad it hurts. This GT 640M is like, dead.

Now that I think about it, it might've been DOA.

... Should've never sold the 675MX, that was a good card. Downgraded thinking the 7 and 8 series would be worth it to wait for... :(

Yeah - 675MX overvolted & overclocked would be better than stock 680M.

Im in the progress of selling my notebook so I will be one month without a notebook so its gonna be tough. But gotta do it now to get most money out of it I think. Value will go down once 900M evidence starting appearing. Which could be already at that event in September

Hopefully I can order a new one shortly after :)

I don't even remeber that statement, you have great memory, it happens that there is never a laptop that i am totally convinced of buying XD. My brother always tease me about that, because i have been planning on changing mi laptop since the Asus N53SV with the 540m came out, LOL. Right now i am thinking about a 17" Clevo with 850m ddr3 and 900p screen, but that depends on if there is any deal or if i get hired where i am currently working with a grant (which i think is quite possible)

860m support? haven't they already have support?

I wont say this is impossible. But we need to be realistic. First of all, Nvidia is a business. It's not something that exists to bring us the best that it possibly can as soon as it has the technology.. If by some MIRACLE it has a card that is capable of 50% over 880m, they will release first generation @ 15% then 2nd gen @ 35 3rd @ 50%. That way they make WAY more money off the SAME thing. And since there's no competition, they are FREE to do exactly that. Their concerns aren't pleasing customers, its pleasing shareholders, period. I'm all for new gen cards, but lets keep it realistic please.

    GTX780 is 250W, so 870 will be 150W if 100W less than 780.

GTX770 is 230W, and has the exact same core config as 780M, except both core and memory are clocked much higher.

    770: 1046 core (1085 boost), 7008 memory
    780M: 771 core (849 boost), 5000 memory

So on the old Kepler architecture both core and memory have to be downclocked by nearly 40% to cut 130W of TDP. The relationship is likely non-linear, but going with a very crude estimate, to cut 50W of TDP both core and memory would need to be downclocked by approximately 15%. Of course have to factor in 770 running at 1.2V while 780M at 1V. Maxwell being more efficient may also mean it won't have to be downclocked as much. Although I'm still skeptical because nVidia's flagship mobile card has been more or less equivalent to an X60 desktop card since the 500 series, and the X60 desktop cards have usually trailed the X70 cards by quite a margin.

Btw not sure if this has been mentioned already, but Maxwell will be at least 35% more efficient than Kepler.

Thing is, 20nm Maxwell is probably going to way faster than 100% faster than 880M. 28nm Maxwell is gonna be 50-100% faster than 880M, and with a die shrink to 20nm you can almost double that again. So, I think NVidia have a big envelope of future performance up their sleeve, so even if they do milk it, then we're still gonna see impressive increments of performance. This makes me think that 50% faster than 880M is quite possible for the next flagship.

So people waiting for Maxwell for this long will have just a single go with their laptop tenure, no more upgrading of gfx cards ? :/

    GTX 670:
    1344 cores @ 980MHz
    170W TDP

    GTX 680M:
    1344 cores @ 720MHZ
    100W TDP

Nvidia removed over 70W to make the GTX 680M. That was done with lower clocks, but also lower voltage and binning.

    GTX 780 TI:
    2880 cores @ 925MHz
    250W TDP

    GTX 780:
    2304 cores @ 900MHz
Safe to assume its atleast down to 230W TDP if not less.

    GTX 870:
TDP: 100W less than GTX 780 state the recent leak, meaning around 130W maybe.

    GTX 980M:
Nvidia only have to remove 30W to make this GPU. Much less than the GTX 670 and 680M situation.

    GTX 660:
    960 cores @ 980MHz
    140W TDP

    GTX 670MX
    960 cores @ 650MHz
    75W TDP

    --------------------------------------------------------

GTX 970M might be based on GTX 870 with same core count because of the TDP.
GTX 980M might be based on GTX 880 with more cores than GTX 870 because of the TDP. Or more cores than 870 but less than 880.

    GTX 870 = 130W (ish)
    GTX 970M = 75W

    GTX 880 = 170W (ish)
    GTX 980M = 100W

Or Nvidia will be milking this to the max and make GTX 980M based on GTX 870, bit I still think the above make more sense and should make room for better GPU on 2015.

Well it wasnt me that said Gamescom announcement. That was our leaker that suddenly appeared out of nowhere. I just speculated that its plausible. Still wonder who that guy was...

The x4500 graph I made was also posted on a ton of chinese sites although I stated that it was not confirmed. Luckily it seems accurate though.

That said I have posted a bunch of leaks earlier, from Kepler cards to M295X to desktop cards.

I have several sources for October release for the 980M. I feel very safe that people here will get their hands on it that month.

    1. lol at that picture. :p
    2. You are def right. Tonga (R9 M295x) is good reason why Nvidia wont wait until Q1 2015 before releasing the 980M.

Yep, very good chances for that. Although they could be called GTX 975M and GTX 980M.

20nm will undoubtly make room for many other new GPUs that will be better than the upcoming cards. There are chances we wont see 20nm until late 2015 along with Pascal though.

I dont think they will abandon MXM modules though. Who knows, future cards could still be compatible with our notebooks :)

Did anyone ever look at the NVIDIA GPU roadmap?

This was released by NVIDIA, the manufacturer. It's much more reliable than all of this speculative talk. There's a good chance all of you voting for 2015 to see Maxwell are wrong. They're obviously going to release Maxwell this year, but may release another version of it next year with Broadwell.

Also, I just read that Pascal may be supported with Broadwell (don't know yet). Apparently Pascal will still support PCIe 3.0. So, I wouldn't let go of the hope that you can upgrade just yet. We don't know what Broadwell will turn out to be like.

actually guys, I think we thought a little too much about amd... the real competition comes from intel...

AnandTech | Intel Broadwell Architecture Preview: A Glimpse into Core M

although I'm calling such bs on intel having more advanced architecture than maxwell, intel did have some pretty hot stuff.
maxwell's performance will still slaughter iGPU at any given day, but intel has managed well on their efficiency.

with this said, however, don't expect much performance improvements for Broadwell cpu, you know where the money is spent.

this is why nvidia should just go ham on maxwell and give intel a proper lesson

AMD is rolling out Carrizo sometime next year, and there's a chance they'll give it stacked DRAM.

Hopefully that will discourage Nividia from continuing to sell Fermi chips. The 820Ms and below are all Fermi stuff.

EDIT: ExtremeTech published an article talking about how dedicated GPUs are disappearing from laptops, especially ultrabooks. http://www.extremetech.com/computin...gpu-and-what-budget-gamers-should-do-about-it

They already released Maxwell this year though, which satisfies the roadmap. I agree that there will probably be more Maxwell chips released this year, but the roadmap doesn't prove anything.

It is undoubtly coming very soon. Broadwell would be nice, but have you seen the latest preview of it? Read the heibk201 link.
Broadwell feature a whopping +5% IPC (clock for clock) over Haswell. The rest is about IGPs...

So yeah, Nvidia may have been waiting for Intel to try to sync up the Maxwell launch with Broadwell, but recent roadmaps stating Q2 2015 for Broadwell surely put a stop for that plan :p

Yeah I expect Broadwell to do pretty well against Kepler cards. Intel seems to devote more and more die area for the graphic part of the chip, so eventually they will make a decent allin one chip for gaming.
Will for sure be very interesting to see Broadwell review of the Quad cores in 2015 :)

Pascal is rumored late 2015 for GP104 and big chips (GP100) in early 2016. You can also see the computation efficiency per watt for Maxwell over Kepler in this recent leak. Its 2x as much which is bloody amazing considering they are both on 28nm.

But I do think AMD will be first out with stacked VRAM before Nvidia. They should have it with the R9 300 series sometime in H1 2015 I think. After all they have been working close with Hynix to create HBM. They should be well ahead of Nvidia there.

I'm partially fine with way intel is going. I like the focus on increasing efficiency and low power consumptions but there's no reason for that to be not accompanied by a more relevant performance increase.
maxwell is a great example of reducing power consumption while increasing performance at the time and it has done well.

intel on the other hand focused too much on this useless iGPU. for all we know in 3D rendering it still won't be as efficient as maxwell while its peak performance is still pretty limited albeit with a supposed "50%" improvement.

as of now I can't really see how intel could go with an all in one chip for gaming. for mobile, there's a limitation on TDP because iGP shares tdp with the CPU, so in the end it becomes like those dual air+water coolers - it simply sucks at both. for desktop there's almost no chance that intel will be able to compete with middle to high range gfx cards, not even close.

as for the average joe users who don't even need a dGPU on a desktop, what difference does it really make?

so even with the improved iGP, there's almost no real benefit to anything really. not even for ultrabooks (really? with that power supply/cooling?) if you game, you are always better off with a dGPU, if you don't game, what's the point of a better iGP? even for light gamers, spending $50 more for a decent dGPU for a much better experience is worth it imo.
not to mention the improved iGP will jack up the prices

the only "real" benefit I can see is that it probably will pressure huang and amd to get rid of those lowest tier rebrand gfx like 820m or r5 m230 and replace them with something that will actually make some differences.

in the end this iGPU race is still bs, intel should've just focused more on the real stuff.

EDIT: btw I call such bullsh!t on iGPU getting support for DX 11.2 while 860m doesn't, nvidia gotta pull their crap up too

The issue is that not everyone is willing to spend +$1000 or sacrifice battery life. That's why there's a market for lower-end desktop GPUs that sit between IGPs and the mid/upper end GPUs.

You should also take a look at Steam's Hardware Survey: Steam Hardware & Software Survey

Intel takes up nearly 20% of the GPU share.

They still haven't fully updated the July survey, but I recall the previous surveys showing that low to midrange GPUs were the most popular.

EDIT: I was tempted to buy the W230SS, but the idle battery life of 6 hours and WiFi/video battery life was only 4 hours.

I'm looking at the UX303LN (i7-4510 and GT 840M) since it has 10 hours of idle battery life and 6 hours for WiFi/video.

The Elitebook 840 is also interesting since it allows overclocking of the i7-4600U to +3.4 GHz for both cores (almost an i7-4600M), though I've heard that the Radeon 8750M throttles severely at 72C, possibly due to HP restricting the GPU's power consumption.

Broadwell may not even get socketed M chips, and will instead either be ULV crap, or soldered BGA garbage. Don't hold your breath. ( source)

Are you suggesting everything will be ULV in 2015?

Uh no, I am saying there may not be socketed Broadwell chips.

Which has been rumored since Broadwell rumors started after Haswell launched so there is definitely something there.

Because they don't want another Haswell embarrassment so they will push Skylake for high end.

Well the design choices of the gt72 actually point to socket less CPU aswell , so it might be true that broadwell will only be soldered CPUs for laptops. Personally I'm not that affected since I have nevered replaced my CPU plus upgrading from the head start isn't that expensive , except for the extreme processors
