Hi, I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FW590 on the way and I was hoping someone could tell me if it would run Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Oblivion, The Witcher, and Flight Sim X? Anyway to judge if it could play Mass Effect 2 too? Sorry about all the games.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9600 (2.80GHz)
    GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4650 1GB
    RAM: 4GB DDR2-SDRAM-800
Display: Not really sure. 1920x1080? I think.

    Thanks!

The 128bit memory bus is going to hold it back at higher resolutions (1680*1050, 1920*1080).

But at 720P (1280*720) or 900P (1440*900) those games will run fine at high settings.

As crash has so kindly pointed out, you need much better hardware. Do read the sticky guides on the types of graphics cards available and then repost once you have a better idea of the integrated card you can afford.

I don't mean to be on your case about this, it's just that I feel like your question has been answered several times, yet you keep asking it.

Unfortunately, Intel and Nvidia market their integrated GPUs as "powerful enough for gaming" and whatnot, when the reality is that they are not meant for gaming. Many people buy laptop with those GPUs thinking that they'll be able to run games well, when in fact they can't. The bottom line is that if you want to game on your laptop, you need a dedicated GPU, not an integrated GPU. And if you are stuck with an integrated GPU, there really isn't anything you can do about it short of getting a new laptop. :(

Integrated cards are less powerful, which means they consume less power, generate less heat, require less cooling (therefore reducing fans, take less space, less power, etc), etc. Basically, they allow for basic video functions (watching movies, Aero effects in Windows, very basic gaming and provide much better battery life than a dedicated GPU. Basically, integrated cards are for the non-gamers.

    Hello all :)

So, I'm considering Left for Dead 2 and Dragon Age, but I'm not too sure my once high end laptop is up to the task of playing both at the native 1200p.
    My specs:
    Intel C2D T7400 @ 2.16 GHz
    4 GB DDR2 RAM @ 667 MHz
Nvidia Geforce Go 7950 GTX (my second replacement card after the previous two fried)
80 GB HD 7200 RPM (to be upgraded within the next month or so to accommodate these huge games)
    Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

    I'm worried about two things:
    1. The recommended CPU for Dragon Age is a 2.4 GHz QUAD core. How will my lowly dual core fair, especially at high resolutions where the majority of the pressure is on the GPU?
    2. Speaking of the GPU, since most new games are shader heavy, how will my previous architecture card do? What's the highest resolution I can run on medium/high?

I can run Oblivion maxed at 1200p and Fallout 3 on med/high at 1680x1050, the former with an avg 35 fps (>40 fps indoors, dipping to mid 20s outside) and the latter with an avg around 30 fps overall. I'm a fan of both games (I still play both when I have the time) leading me to Dragon Age and have heard nothing but good things about LFD2.

    Thanks in advance. :D

You can play both games in that res with your card, if that is your res, but you will have to lower some of the settings. You probably already know that AA and shadows make a performance hit so... C2D will do fine as well.

@misslea: You'll be able to run Guild Wars fine with that setup. Guild Wars really isn't a demanding game(I could play it at medium with a GMA950 with roughly 5-30FPS and it was playable for me at those numbers) and it's more about your internet connection speed for the overall smoothness.

If you actually scrolled up a few posts, you would have seen this post.

Considering he's able to run Oblivion and FO3 (the exact same games that you're trying to find out about) with the 7950 GTX, you can probably extrapolate from there. 7950 GTX = roughly 1/2 8800M GTX, and as I recall, the GTX 260M is about 5-15% faster? It's not perfect, but at least you can get some idea. Hope that works.

    From here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-280M.14558.0.html
You can see the 280m is between a desktop 9800 gt and 9800 gtx. Now you can go here and search for those cards, bearing in mind your card should be closer to the upper bound as it has twice the VRAM to help at higher resolutions:
    http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/...-charts-2009-high-quality/Fallout-3,1510.html
Note the different charts on that site for differing graphics settings.
My 7950 GTX handles the game fairly well on high with 2x AA @ 1680x1050 only dropping when there are a lot of enemies and/or particle effects on screen, so your card should max it at 1080p (assuming the rest of your rig doesn't bottleneck your GPU).

    @grbac
Thanks for the response. Just when I head to Amazon to check out LFD2 for $30, they're sold out with the new shipping time up to 10-14 days (I've only got another 10 days on campus before I fly home). Now I'm considering waiting for some kind of GOTY edition of Dragon Age with the DLC, though I'm really tempted to just buy it now. Oh well, in the meantime I've got projects due and FO3 to keep me occupied (mods are AMAZING).

Being that the system is completely different drawing conclusions about the performance I'll get based on his is probably not wise.

I can do no more than estimate and if I had planned on relying on that I probably wouldn't have asked for people's experiences with the card.

@above thanks I'll look at the links.

On the downclocked GTX 260m in the Asus G51, I can max out Oblivion with 4x AA at native resolution (1920x1080) even with a few high resolution mods installed. I have a q9000 CPU, no overclocking CPU or GPU. Have not checked FPS, but it looks smooth to me.

I have a very similar system. I can play L4D2 with the following settings.

    1440x900
all settings on high, AA off.

    or

    1280x768
all settings on high, AA 2x

Both with Vert sync off and getting between 25-80 fps with an average of 35.

i am running on a 720qm with gtx280m with 4gm ddr3 ram ran all on full setting and with AA on. pretty smooth and nice upskirt if you are using a female character. however if u enter vats mode, it will have a litle lag tme before you can select where to hit . about 1 sec lag time. and yeah i run on 1920 x 1080. No lag at all except when you press v. the options for selecting the hit will not appear till about 1 sec later. wonder y :(. In case you do not get me, u enter vats straight when you press v but will have to wait about 1 sec for the options to appear. the percentage things.

I've heard this happen to people on very high end desktops, so it is most likely something in the game itself (or some kind of conflict the game has in certain situations). I seem to experience it when there is a lot going on around my character, though not in all situations. I've patched the game up to V1.7 (or whatever version Point Lookout requires; it's been a while since I got the chance to play).

    @jntar
Thanks. I should be able to get that framerate at 900p with minimal AA then as my card has the needed VRAM to handle it. Is it true that the sequel actually plays better i.e. is better optimized than the first LFD (if you played the first)? I remember trying the LFD demo off Steam and getting around 20 fps @ 1200p maxed (I may have been playing it from an external HD, though this would mainly only affect load times).

I wouldn't even bother with GTA4, Farcry 2, Crysis and Crysis Warhead and ARMA II. The majority of the other games will play but at a very low resolution and at incredi-low settings. I would recommend you get a console if you plan on playing most of these games.

    Hi!

I'm planning to buy a new laptop for my university studies, but I like playing games too, so I figured I'd try to find the best possible combination. I managed to find the following notebooks:

    or

I'd like to play Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Dead Space, maybe Resident Evil 5. Do you think one of the above could run these games decently? If both of them can (I'd be surprised), which one is better?

    Thanks in advance.

    You can max all.

Depending on the resolution, Acer is better.

18 wheels of steel extreme trucker and american long haul should be fine on high-max settings
GTA IV at least on medium settings. :D

I was reffering to native resolution of the screen of each NB. Higher res - more power it needs from graphic card.

    ATI 4330 is better.

    Probably all high.

    Yes you will. Medium settings.
