Hypothetical based on a notebook I'm looking at buying. Can I run all of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games on this system? I don't expect to be able to run them in full detail at 1440x900, but I would like them to be playable with decent detail.

    2.66Ghz C2D
    4GB RAM
    80GB SSD
    256MB ATI Radeon 3450HD

NO NO NO do not buy that laptop if you are thinking about gaming. I had a laptop with specs similar to the one that you are looking at and it will not provide you a good gaming experience even on low settings. Look for something with a better gpu.

I'm not looking for a dedicated game machine (if I wanted that I'd buy a desktop). I know it's not going to be the best thing out there but will it run S.T.A.L.K.E.R properly? My other option would be a system with an nVidia NVS3100m which is also not a gaming GPU.

what is your budget though? And the nVidia NVS3100m is still much better than the hd3450.
Source: Notebookcheck: NVIDIA Quadro NVS 3100M
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-3450.9593.0.html

Here is a video of an 8600 GT running STALKER: Call of Prypiat with decent settings(but laggy and more laggy due to fraps)and the performance should be similar maybe a little bit worse. (The Quadro NVS3100m is better than the 8600m GT but not sure about the performance difference in the desktop 8600GT)

Could you post that video of STALKER running on the 8600GT card?

The biggest difference I see looking at the Notebookcheck stats is that the NVS3100m has a substantially higher shader speed than the 3450HD, but the 3450 has 40 pipelines where the NVS3100m only has 16. Is the shader speed difference enough to allow the NVS3100m to apparently have almost double the performance of the 3450HD?

YouTube - Stalker : Call of Pripyat gameplay (NVidia GeF 8600GT,2GB RAM,AMD 2.2 GHz X2)

Also check the 3dMark06 scores on Notebookcheck over 1000 more points for the NVS3100m compared to the hd 3450
EDIT: Whats the resolution on the laptop?

I can play DA:O at 1600x900 with 4xAA on my MR4650 at about 25-30 fps. He should be ok.

Im thinking of getting an studio xps 16. Specs are as follows:

    CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache)

    GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5730 - 1GB

RAM: 6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1333MHz

Display: Edge-to-Edge FHD Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1920x1080)

I'd be playing WoW, starcraft 2, Battlefield bad company 2, Dragon Age Origins, Kotor, Oblivion, and possibly EVE, and several other games.

I'm thinking about getting a 13 MBP with the 320m integrated chip. I realize that since its in an integrated card, i shouldn't expect much. However, do you think it can run Mass Effect 2 at all?

It's nice that you don't expect much, because you'll be pleasantly surprised. Here's a video of the MBP 13" playing Mass Effect 2 at high settings and native resolution without AA.

I am about to buy a Toshiba T155D-S1125 notebook ..has AMD Turion Neo X2 L325, integrated ATI Radeon 3200 graphics, and will have 4GB RAM
My question, will it run MS Flight Simulator X (it is a game!)?
.. like to have some fun with it, besides just work projects!

Honestly that looks pretty good. Without the loss from FRAPS, I'd imagine it to be pretty playable. I'm looking at 1440x900 (wish I could have 1400x1050 like my current machine), and now both notebooks I'm looking at are NVS3100m (256MB for the Lenovo T410, 512 for the Dell E6410). It will come down to price. Beyond S.T.A.L.K.E.R the one game that I really want to be sure I can play is Deus Ex 3. No system requirements have been released but I want to make sure I have as much graphics power as possible in a 14.1" business notebook so that I can play it...been looking forward to this one since the terrible Deus Ex 2.

About $2000. The Lenovo T410, Dell E6410, and HP 8440p/w are the top models in that category. All use the NVS3100m (256 for the T410, 512 for the other two) with the exception of the 8440w which has an nVidia FX380M (I would buy this in a heartbeat except 16:9 screens suck. A lot). Here's the config that Lenovo is offering for just under $1300:

    Operating System
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit
    Processor
    2.66 GHz Intel i7-620, 4mb L3 cache
    RAM
    4GB (2 DIMMS, PC3-8500)
    Hard Drive
    500GB 7200rpm
    Video Card
    NVIDIA 3100, 256MB
    Optical Drive
    DVD-Multi-burner (Dual Layer)
    Display
    14.1" WXGA+ w/ 2.0 megapixel camera
    Wireless
    Intel 6300 AGN, Bluetooth 2.1
    Ports
4 USB 2.0 (1 Powered), eSATA Port, VGA
    DisplayPort, 1394 Firewire 400 (4 pin)
    MultiCard Reader
    5-in-1 Reader (MMC, Memory Stick,
Memory Stick Pro, SD & XD)
    Weight
    4.9bls.
    Battery
    6 Cell (up to 4.5hrs)
    Warranty
4 year Onsite Next Business Day Warranty**
    4 year ThinkPad Protection**
    Batteries only carry 1yr warranty
    Price
    $1,295

Unfortunately it's a preconfigured package and they won't let me upgrade the GPU to 512 for the upgrade cost of $25 that the option carries on a CTO model. So I guess my question becomes, will that configuration run the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games and will it likely be able to run Deus Ex 3? (which is based on the same engine as Tomb Raider Underworld but will have slightly higher requirements). My graphics expectations aren't high because I've used an ATI Radeon 7500 for the past six years (I really like my Compaq Evo and have no real desire to replace it so I'm not set on buying something immediately).

Perhaps at really low settings. Check the internet for configuration files. There are plenty of videos of people playing GTA4 on cards below "required" specifications.

A Intel Core i5 430m should handle GTA IV.
Best bet would be to grab ATI Catalyst 10.5 for notebooks and also look for tweaked configs.

Do you have to have a 14inch screen?
    High-Max settings
Do you mind if you buy a laptop thats refurbished? If you want to game you can take a look at the Asus G51vx
    http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-G51VX-RX05-15-6-Inch-Laptop-Refurbished/dp/B002RX43RE
should handle most games fine on high settings.
Id go with the GTS 360m

Yes. I'm using a 14.1" SXGA+ screen right now and I'm going to be unhappily moving to WXGA+ (hate widescreen in all of its forms, 16:10 sucks and 16:9 is so bad that I would rather continue using my six-year old Compaq Evo than buy a 16:9 notebook). 14.1" WXGA+ provides the best balance of portability and power in current notebooks since the old Lenovo T61p was dropped (14.1" SXGA+, 128 MB nVidia FX570M). Actually this raises a question...how far behind the times would one of those be for gaming? If it can keep up with modern games (keeping in mind that the FX570M in the T61p is a crippled 64-bit version), I'd much rather have that than the T410.

That doesn't make sense - you have raised the settings for a better result. Unless you are using a config with the second one.

I was under the assumption that computers like working at resolutions that get nearer to native resolution, as no scaling is involved. However, that result is nearly doubled, which to me makes no sense.

Have you tried running it at 1920x1080?

Can't you people understand that the GPU has mostly no impact at all on this game's performance? It's the CPU that does all the job. I get a difference of 2-3 FPS between 800x600 and 1280x1024, and no difference at all between high or low settings. Maybe 2 fps if it depends on texture quality. You should stop supporting Rockstar for making this epic fail console port game, especially their new patch that "fixes" those ugly shadows and low performance issues. At least before i could use 1.0.0.4 patch and squeeze 20-25 fps, now with their new patch applied on episodes from liberty city i can hardly get above 23 fps on 800x600 and absolutely everything on minimum. I got very lucky for selling the game, and this was the last one purchased from them, my last bit of support, they have no excuse!
Unless you have a quad core or a highly overclocked dual core (at least 2.8-3.0 GHz), forget about GTA 4.

GTA IV Can be VERY playable, in fact, I ran it on my old prescott I had... I think it was a 3Ghz single core with a 9600GSO I think. There's a texture mod on the internet somewhere. GTAForums.com -> Grand Theft Auto IV TweakGuide Here it is; just found it. The problem with the game mainly is that the default texture size is about 1024px and when you have thousands of these on the screen at once, it can make even the most modern gaming machines cringe... This trick has worked a couple times, and most of the tweaks; there is a little to no difference in the visual quality.

You might get similar quality by lowering the resolution, but compensating with temporal anti-aliasing, perhaps 1440p or 1280x720? try some of the tweaks in the link I posted, some of those should help get your FPS to 20 at least.

I don't think that you will be able to run this game on any set of settings even the lowest possible since the you have an integrated GPU & the game recommended GPU is a HD4800 series same goes to the processor cuz it also requires a phenom X4 (which is a quad core)

I been using the leaked 10.6 drivers for 2 months now but imma use the new 10.5 soon

Also try lowering your resoulution to 1024x768. I never run it on native resoulution since my CPU is weak and its lags a bit when i do

yes it can.. any notebook with a 5650 has no problem at all

get the GTX260M one.. GTX260M is way better than DDR3 GTS360M... and even a GDDR5 GTS360M is weaker than GTX260M..
