Thread seams a little quiet last couple days. I have been playing with 1 980m with max settings except aa. I think its set to fxaa and has been working just fine with close to 60fps most of the time. No crashes or problems and I'm in 359 driver.
For those of you that are playing I'm curious what level you guys are on. I'm on level 24 and the missions just seem never ending. It seams you go to one location for someone and you spend hours doing missions for someone else who you didn't even go there for in the first place lol.

Sounds like a game with no purpose, a game you wander around forever aimlessly and spend 500 hours in. Sounds like Skyrim.

I was not a fan of Skyrim, but happy for those who liked Skyrim, they got another endless time dump game.

Over 100 hours in, at level 26 or so, still haven't visited Diamond City or done hardly any quests yet. Founded about 10 settlements so far. Surprised that keeping them all defended has been relatively easy at this point, I just load them up with turrets and when they get attacked I get hopped up on some jet and run about killing the Super Mutants or Raiders, etc.

The settlements don't get attacked very often. I will mod these values when the CK is released so settlements get attacked a lot more frequently.

Also ran into quite a few tough groups of enemies where after dying dozens of times I had to just run away and make a note to come back later to get some payback, like the cultists that use some kind of radiation attack, and those Forged pyros.

Yep the dynamic Story Manager system is a big part of this game, can't wait to start making some mods that use this feature.

I just got to lvl 26, still haven't gone to diamond city but finally got rid of the dog. :) Jeez, I'm not a dog hater, but it made sneaking around impossible-always barking and knocking over stuff!! Inside areas with the dog were almost impossible to navigate. I've joined the minute men, don't know who else I will join. Steel team has great stuff-BUUUUUT, that pure blah blah blah stuff is not my cup of tea.

This is my first Fallout game and even though everything on ultra graphics seems old and stiff. My character has walked through tables and become see through for no apparent reason. :p Is it me are does going from day to night go really fast?!? I mean of spent hours playing GTA 5, and Witcher3 and time doesn't go that quickly. I've especially noticed it when fast traveling.

Yep it's a bit fast. You can slow down the day/night cycle the same way as with Skyrim.

Open the developer console with ` (shift+tilde key) and type
    Code:
    set timescale to X
for X use any number below the default, which is 20 (for every minute that passes while you are playing, 20 minutes pass in-game). I set mine to 10, which seems like a good pace.

Note that using console command disables Steam achievements for that session, so you may want to save and restart the game.

I'm trying to establish what the absolute minimum is for this game-
A very good friend of mine is currently serving in Africa and is a huge fallout fan. His machine is a core i3-2320m w/ HD 3000
I have a choice of 2 very cheap machines currently that I'm thinking of buying and sending to him for Christmas as we won't see him,
    i7 2640m & NVS 4200m w/ 8GB 1333MHz RAM -Or- i5 3320m w/ HD 4000 & 8GB of 1600Mhz
I would assume the Nvidia would always be better, but the card is rather old, and I don't think either of these will be very strong for FO4, but it's the max of my budget currently (Machine + game + Shipping to Africa is quite expensive)- has anyone been trying the game with extremely low specs?

The i7 and NVS 4200m will serve him better, although the 4200m is likely about on par performance with the Intel HD 4000, but not sure if it will run on HD 4000.

That's along the lines of what I've assumed. I may try to find a dirt cheap 540m / 620m / 630m with no HDD / RAM, etc. Instead.

Just for giggles I tried it on my son's i7-2630QM machine with HD 4000 graphics and it ran at 1280x720 in windowed mode only and 10-15 FPS with absolute minimum details. It would not run in full screen. So I'd say it's a no go. I would say a 640m minimum, but 540m or 630m might run ok at 1280x720 minimum details. Although any laptop with the latest Intel HD graphics will probably run it fine. I'll try later on my Asus laptop with i7-5500U and HD 5500 GPU.

I'd say my specs are around the absolute minimum, as the game is barely playable for me at 1152x648, and there is not any simple way reduce resolution lower than that. If your friend is a huge fallout fan, they might be able to put up with the frame rate I get at the settings I'm playing on, everything absolute lowest possible, shadows disabled via FalloutPrefs.ini, 15-25fps occasionally jumping up to 40+fps, or dropping down to 3-7fps in certain areas. Any lower frame rate than this and I think the game would be impossible to play.

In a couple months, however, there will be some low res texture mods that will make the game run much better on weaker PCs. In the vanilla launcher settings, there is not any way to reduce the lighting and textures below "Medium," so there should be a lot of room to scale down with mods.

On the positive side, no major bugs, the game doesn't crash at all on me, and I get 60fps for the intro movies :p

EDIT: Any chance the base where he is stationed at has a PS4 on hand? Maybe the console version of the game would be easier.

I'd say the minimum for this game is a GTX 950M. Forget trying it with an iGPU.

I agree about the iGPU part. It takes some finagling to get it to work on Intel GPU, but it runss fine with GT 940m at 1280x720 at low settings. Running 40-50 FPS in general and 30-35 in heavy texture/action areas. Plus I OC'd my 940m and gained a few FPS.

But this game doesn't like Optimus so well. Can't run it in full screen mode. I think that may be more an issue with Intel than Bethesda actually.

Hmm, what problems are you having fullscreen with Optimus @HTWingNut?

So far not a problem on my machine. Using latest drivers for both Intel and Nvidia. Been distracted with JC3 this week, but that's only a fling, the real meat is in this game ha....

I cleaned drivers with DDU and did an install of latest Intel and Nvidia drivers and the game crashes when in full screen mode. I have to run it in borderless windowed mode which sucks performance out of it. Fine for a faster GPU but for the 940, I'd like to run at 720p. I can set desktop to 720p then run in borderless window mode and it works then. But like I said, windowed mode isn't as efficient as full screen mode.

Lots of people having this issue:

Hmm, in my case I have the opposite situation. It only runs in fullscreen mode, and the lowest resolution possible is 1152 x648. Borderless windowed mode doesn't work for me.

If I switch to borderless, I can go to lower resolution, but the game becomes zoomed in so only a quarter of the screen is visible.

Would be amazing if there were a resolution scaling setting - this allows me to run games like Battlefront on the same old laptop at very smooth framerate, while the UI is still appropriate for 1080p display.

EDIT: just found this mod for resolution scaling, will give it a shot http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1850/?

I've been playing on the beta version. It does fix the quests and issues described.

Very slight frame rate improvement in some areas. Never experienced any CTD problems, so not sure if it helped people who were crashing.

Hoping they roll out some monster optimization patch at some point.

My verdict is it took my game that never crashed and ran like butter and inserted random crashes (DAMN IT!!!). Why is it that these blasted patches are forced on you like M$ win10 crap. If you want the patch download it, if your game is working fine than you should have the option to not allow the update. I literally quick save before doing anything. This is especially true if I'm in a battle with lots of stuff going on. If I don't quick save I could get a black screen and back to desktop. Patch= (For me)

How in the world are you crashing with 980M, 4940MX and 32GB RAM when I'm not? Could it be that Win 7 is more stable for this game? Or are you using some mods?

As I said in my OP, the game was running smooth like butter. I got up to lvl 45 (no mods) with no problems, glitches or other hiccups. As soon as the DAMN patch was inserted (thanks steam) I started getting random crashes.

New patch 1.3 forced down my gaming throat via Steam. I don't see any big difference. Game still plays well, everything set to highest settings. Most importantly, all my mods still work. Up to level 90+, still haven't found sub, or been to ship by bunker hill. Did ending where RR, BOS and minute men all alive. Institute nuked to squirrel bits. This game like crack can't stop playing, it's stopping me from starting new Tomb Raider :p

Nope, 2nd GPU sits there doing nothing. I will say even when I force SLI to work I don't see any great, OMG, difference. I don't feel the game pushes my pc that much. That includes all the mods I've added, like more blood, landscape coloring, water, storms etc. One card runs game with no hiccups. Really like the mod where I can have enemies attack settlements. "Cait, Piper, Curie grab your institute lasers and get into your stolen BOS armor and help defend Spectale Island." LMAO  :p ;)
