It's a steam production. Even if you buy the disc, steam will be installed and required to play it. Stevenx

Is there a need or benefit of playing/completing 3 to start and enjoy this? Like a story or character continuation?
-
Frame-rate is all over the place. Can drop from 60 to 15 instantly, choppiness and lag when interacting with NPC's.
Already regretting preordering the game, now I've wait for patch...

it's a different game altogether.
it's not really related to fallout 3, story wise.
they may make some mention of the stuff like offhandedly but not much.
as for how it plays. depending on your luck, video card, etc you're gonna get fps issues (especially if on nvidia) and some stuttering and stuff.
mouse will feel floaty til you change some stuff.
settings may change back after you change 'em since it seems to make everything read only by accident.
this doubles for quick saves and auto-saves. it doesn't register 'em since those files have been marked read only or something by accident at some point.
regular saves still work. -
Only real problems for me have been sudden slowdowns that seem to come out of nowhere. It only happens for a split second and occurs every minute or so.
I did get a glitch where I came back from being away for some time and my gun kept firing without me wanting to. It was the area with all of Deathclaws and needless to say they started to notice me. -
i'm so tempted to do wild wasteland.

oh oblivion/fallout engine. your bugs are so disturbing -
bouahahahahahahahaha to bad these kind of bug where fixed when i joined FO3
-
After 6 hours of play I have noticed that if you play for a long time (2 hours straight) that bugs are randomly appearing. For example, I went to pick a lock and the computer hacking screen pops up so I can't see the lock.
The one thing I hate the most is that you have to go all the way around to get somewhere. If there is a ridge, you have to travel all the way around it instead of climbing over it. -
Yeah that happened in Fallout3, although not very often. It reminds me of Guild wars ^^
-
Game runs like a dream for me, all maxed out perfect fps, no slowdown.

Unreal - you make me laugh dude. Yes, steam adds some overhead but i would venture to say that most folks are use to it by now. Anyone reporting any other game issues so far?

Hardcore mode is a lot of fun. It feels much more balanced IMO. In FO3, you could stockpile stimpaks and the game would become a bit too easy, even on the hardest setting. On hardcore mode in F:NV, I find that I actually have a reason to get excited about finding food and water, etc. and the fact that the stimpaks don't instantly heal, and crippled limbs must be reset by a doctor, add a lot to the realism and enjoyability. In FO3, there wasn't really any point to carrying around food or water if you can simply use stimpaks.
I have found a couple of minor glitches, like an object can't be picked up because it is partly inside a bed frame, or strange AI movement on a mountain, etc.
I also found one major glitch, which is the quick save and auto save revert to earlier versions on occasion.
However, I noticed absolutely none of the "micro-stutters" that would happen in FO3 occasionally. At 1920x1080, all detail settings on Ultra I was getting around 35 fps. I read that if you lower the water setting in the advanced video options, it improves a great deal and after adjusting water reflection and refraction but keeping the rest of the settings on Ultra, it bumped up to around 45 fps. I haven't seen any bodies of water yet, so I don't know how this affects the appearance.
In F:NV, if I overclock beyond 480MHz / 1050 MHz, it crashes. In most games I'm able to overclock to 550 / 1150, but I noticed the same thing in Civ5, which is also DirectX 11, maybe this has something to do with it. -
water afect fps when no water is near fail i don, twanna se the hit when you get near a lake

potential FIX for npc slowdown - Bethesda Softworks Forums
Game on... -
Well I finally went out to Walmart and picked up a copy (I like having the box), and I gotta admit, the game is not disappointing.
There seems to be so many different ways to take the story in this game. It will definitely be a game I play through several times, just to get different outcomes.
As for any bugs, I have not come across any so far, and I get good FPS on medium/max settings. -
So, normally I like having the physical disc but I didn't want to wait for an order through Amazon like I had planned (10% sales tax here that I wanted to avoid by ordering online) so I just bought it through Steam (makes backups easier too).
I've only played a couple hours so far but from what I've seen so far I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy this game.
My experience:
- On my GX640 in sig running with GPU DOWNCLOCKED to 625/700 (from 625/1000) I'm still running at a minimum 34 fps with all settings MAXED; the only time I've noticed it dip to around 25 is for the fraction of a second that it's loading more distant scenery/buildings (getting between 50 and 90 fps indoors)
- So far no glitches, anomalies, hangs, or CTDs observed
- It may just be me, but the game overall feels smoother (even in menu) than Fallout 3 did, though to be fair I am playing on a much faster comp as I did with FO3 (my old, faithful XPS)
- Storywise, the beginning hasn't seemed as good/involved/complete as that of Fallout 3, though this is likely due to the lack of backstory to the main character (which, I assume, will be unlocked through the main story line)
I'll post further observations over the weekend sometime after I've gotten a chance to play a bit more. Overall, I'm pretty sure I'll be getting more than my money's worth with this installment of Fallout. -

steam is actually a really good thing.
the application and overlay doesn't take much power... about as much as any of the other 100's of processes running in the background while your game is running that are related to normal operating system function. the overhead is absolutely marginal. -
Yeah I know what it does - it's just I don't want any of that. I want .exe file to run the freaking game. I don't need/want another interface to run my programs - OS does it just fine to me. It did it fine since MS DOS 5.0 and it does it well now on Win 7 Pro.
I just hate bloatware and I consider Steam exactly that (personal opinion of course). I just really really hate it.
I am a kind of person who disables all possible updates (except for anti-virus if its not going to bug me). I just want to click and the game to run. That's it. With regular HDD I found Steam does increase my run time.
Now... onto the more important issues. I started playing. Women still have mustaches. -
Steam just released a patch so hopefully this helps all the people having trouble running the game smoothly.
That video really freaked me out with the guys head spinning. -
I use steam and like it. That's all I will say about that.
The game is a mixed bag for me right now. I played FO3 and really liked it. It wasn't the best game I ever played, but it was definitely an enjoyable and memorable experience. FO:NV just reminds me of what I've already done and I guess it isn't a big surprise since they didn't really change a thing about the gameplay. Although I haven't started a Hardcore character, I think I will since it will be a big difference to what I'm used to and it will make it "feel" like a different game.
The graphics are the same as before. The textures look like they are copied over from the last games and they also seem to have transferred the bugs as well. I've encountered some bugs such as clipping (enemies getting stuck in weird places) and AI issues, but overall it's no different than what I had to put up with in FO3. Performance-wise, I was getting a lot of screen tearing and decided to turn V-sync on and it got rid of that. Everything runs pretty smooth (45-60fps) but I do get occasional slow downs when I see dust devils in the wasteland. This is probably because my ATI cards don't have PhysX.
I'm going to keep going until I either finish or get bored. But so far, the story is keeping me going. There's just something about revenge stories that just gets me going...
P.S. Does anyone else find the mouse acceleration in the game menu's maddening? I want to turn it off, but I don't know how too. It's also turned off in my OS...so I don't know what to do. -
After a quick search, here's what I found on the mouse acceleration that was driving me crazy too.
Mouse fix from OC.net
I added the lines to my ini file, but haven't gotten to try it out yet. -
Oh wow, thanks for the info man. I'll definitely try it out.
Edit: Pasted in the commands and it works great! Credit to the original poster and + rep to NSX. -
The only possible bug that i've come across so far has been the nightkin have been cloaked as if they had a stealth-boy on.
The first time I saw them they had color and everything, but ever since loading a save file, they've been cloaked.
Does anyone know any vendors early on that sell mines? I use wayyyy too much ammo trying to take them out. I figure if I can cripple a leg I can just use a pistol + VATS. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
nightkin are supposed to be cloaked. if you shoot 'em they uncloak for a moment or two.
-
I've even tried leaving the Pip-Boy light on to no effect. -

Even though I have had a preorder for a month I finally got to play the game last night. So I'm all excited, I watch the great video before you start to play, hit new, loading...loading...loading...CRASH! I am sorely reminded of FO3 and I think to myself, surely this new game wont require me to fix the .dll again. So I start searching around for others having the problem and guess what, yep its the .dll fix again. After I download and drop the .dll into my Fallout New Vegas folder the game starts up like a champ. So not only does it apparently fix the stuttering and FPS issues on Nvidia and possibly ATI cards that people are getting, it also fixes the CTD issues that many experience either right at the first load or after the movie.
Now that I can play the game I will say that I am extremely excited and getting the itch to play it. Both fortunately and unfortunately I have just been so busy that devoting much time to it has been hard.
I plan to live in FO:NV this weekend though. Screw football I have some heads/limbs/bodies to dismember.
Happy gaming everyone,
Joseph L -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
it may depend on the nightkin.
and possibly your difficulty setting.
I know the ones under the repconn rocket place (brotherhood ghouls are upstairs) the basic guys usually stayed uncloaked long enough to hit them/uncloaked when they got close to me and attacked.
the leader and the jailer nightkin stayed cloaked the entire time. -
So far my two best weapons are the 9mm sub and the Cowboy rifle. My ammo becomes a situation after killing a 3rd one down there. -
Anyone knows whats the reward for playing hard mode since the start?
-
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
LOL, I hope not I think if it's as long as FO3 you would have had to play 24/7 to finish it to the end, that or skip all the side missions. On Hardcore mode, just as a note to the guy on the last page talking about switching to Hardcore mode, if you don't play hardcore from start to finish you don't get the reward at the end. Game runs awesome fully maxxed on my m15x, no mods necessary at 40-60fps(vsync enabled).

Anyone up for a game of.... caravan?
Oh wait... I am still reading the rules.

BTW, someone posted a fix for the save games duplicating glitch:
-
what does steam bring to the game? i found a steam free patch and i'm now considering buying it to patch it but would being steam free break some fonctionality?
-
I started on Hardcore mode, and I love it, it's a challenge, feels more like a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game than that lame duck Fallout 3. To think I almost didn't buy it. I like having to monitor water, food, health. The stimpacks are no longer instant and you need a doctor or a doctor's bag to fix injured limbs. Sleeping doesn't heal you as well. Now it is a real survival game. Obsidian also seems to be much, much better than Bethesda at story telling.
-
I can't get past to that nightkin quest. I've cleared all the nightkins at the basement but still some left and can't find it :/
-
Lol, I finished that nightkin quest, you have to kill the nightkin that talks to the antler. I do have a game breaking glitch though, after launching the rockets from the quest "Come Fly with me", all saves after that quest are now corrupt and I lost hours of gameplay, sigh....
-
Where's it? Is it also at the basement?

could you never find the stealth boys?
I searched high and low but couldn't find anything. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
stealth boys are in a different repconn facility.
behind a door with a high lock picking requirement -
I've never modded a game file to make it run better so any step by step instruction would be awesome.
Thanks! -
