I see. Let me ask. The configurations is asking me for msata drive and a hard drive. I want fast speeds on this laptop. What should be the configuration?
-
I want 1080p 60FPS future proof stuff so 4940XM is god for me. Would this laptop overheat if I use 4940XM? I don't mind going 4900MQ.

Again, for the 10th time:
There won`t be 20nm Maxwell.
20nm process from TSMC is exclusively for SOC chips (ARM, Apple A processors etc).
AMD is going for 20nm for their next generation GPUs but they get the chips from GlobalFoundries which have a HP 20nm process which is for GPUs and alike. Nvidia doesnt have any cooperation with GloFo. = No 20nm Maxwell.
What Nvidia will do to counter AMD`s 20nm GPUs is using TSMC`s 16nm FinFET which really is 20nm but with FinFETs.
Do you copy? -

So do you think when they do go with 16 nm finfet , will we see a full 16 nm finfet equivalent gm204 in mobiles since nvidia decided to put this stupid requirement (or what ever marketing bull )for better fps on battery ? -
What? I didnt quite get what you meant there.
-
In was under the impression FINFET 16nm would debut with Pascal in early 2016.

I mean , do you think that we would get a 28 nm full gm204 or a 16 finfet nm full gm204 ?
Also since nvidia is trying to push for gaming on the battery instead of assuming we will be wired in, does that make the chance of a 16 nm gm204 far more probable? -
HopelesslyFaithful Notebook Virtuoso
all depends on what games were used. Are those peak?
20nm from what i understand was scrapped because it was a failure so we won't see a die shrink until 16nm :/ So it is likely that we either see pascal on 28nm in 2015 or pascal on 16nm in 2015
get the sandisk extreme pro SSD. It is performane king at the moment. If you live in the US use camelcamelcamel.com to price watch it on amazon for a good drop. It should go for like cheap...lol i forget the numbers.
pretty much as you guys have said 20nm is being skipped so when they release a 16nm GPU it will be stupid fast compared to current tech lol. So at least 4k gaming will be possible at that point but IIRC 8k will be around the corner at that point
I can't wait for 4k/8k Total war mmmmmm 4 GPU xfire/SLI
all hersay from what i understand but TSMC dropped high power 20nm off all current tap outs IIRC so we won't see a die shrink until 16nm, which some are saying 2016 but i haven't seen any reports on that so if anyone has press releases or links to info i would love to know -
I'm confused on configuring between msata ssd and hdd. Should I leave the msata blank and go 1tb ssdon hdd only?
-
HopelesslyFaithful Notebook Virtuoso
buy your own hardrive...SSD performance is all over the place. Sandisk extreme pro is the best 2.5 in SSD on the market for now. i dont know about mSATA
tweaktown usually has great reviews on SSDs and if you live in USA use camelcamelcamel.com i can't stress that enough.
EDIT: i am curious about when 16nm is coming out because if its still 2 years i'll just buy a 980m to replace my 7970m since 2 years from now i'll be replacing my laptop with a new one so no need to hold out but if 16nm is 2015 like i thought it was...then i am waiting -
16nm FinFET is for Pascal exclusively.
28nm: 12SMM GTX 980M - October 2014
28nm: Fulll GM204 (16SMM) GTX 985M - May 2015
16nm FinFET: Pascal sometime in 2016Killerinstinct likes this. -
HopelesslyFaithful Notebook Virtuoso
yea 2016 according to press release....missed that one :/ i might get the 980m or wait for the 985m...what do we think the 985m will look like in performance? That is a long time and i hate this damn milking...wastes so many resources :/

I am with you here..

If it's the clevo m.2 sata then the interface is faster than ordinary sata but nothing makes use of the extra speed at the moment, so you're just paying more per gb than regular sata III without anything in return. In fact, the m.2 satas are limited in capacity whereas a standard sata III ssd can go all the way up to 1TB.
As to the ssd - I am really weird because I like MLC's because they will outlast the next PC too. Something like Crucial MX550 is a good value MLC ssd. Usually best to leave it blank when ordering and then shop around unless your reseller is running some super awesome promo (unlikely!) -
So should I leave the msata configuration blank anf just go 1tb ssd?
-
HopelesslyFaithful Notebook Virtuoso
ummm no there are several m2 cards out...do a google, amazon, newegg search. Again if its not an M.2 slot get sandisk extreme best performance and near same price when one sale -
Not sure if this has been posted yet, if it has, sorry for the repeat. NBC's review on the barebones Clevo P651SE with 970m:
Clevo P651SE (Schenker XMG P505) Barebones Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews -
But it *is* an m.2
EDIT - I stand corrected - msata after all -
This has been answered multiple times, but apparently not to your satisfaction, so.. maybe try asking the question differently to get the answer you want?
There is no appreciable difference in performance between mSATA and 2.5" SSD SATA.
mSATA cards will be slightly lighter in weight than 2.5" SSDs, but should be approximately equal in heat generation and power consumption.
mSATA cards can only be used in systems that have mSATA slots - which is not all systems. 2.5" SSDs can be used in almost all systems that accept 2.5" drives - which is almost all of them. If there's a significant chance of you wanting to reuse the drive in a different system later on, you might be better off going with 2.5" SSD.
The advantage of having mSATA slots is that there is more flexibility when it comes to expanding your total storage. If you think you might eventually want to put in a 2TB mechanical drive, for example, you might want that space to be free now, and so you might want to choose mSATA.
If you choose to get only mSATA, then leave the Hard Drive selections blank. If you choose to get only 2.5" SSDs, then leave the mSATA selections blank.
For the system GTO_PAO11 is looking at, no, it is not M.2, it is mSATA: https://www.mythlogic.com/2013_Models/nyx3713ablack.phpHopelesslyFaithful and Ningyo like this. -

Asked this before and never saw an answer. anyone know if eurocom/clevo 980m works in alienware or when dell 980m will be out to buy?
-
-
Do you think buying a 980M is safe and will be satisfying? Or should you wait for Full GM204 in the summer or wait even longer for 16NM end of 2015?
-
I'm guessing based on the link to the auction that Cloudfire just posted above that the answer is yes, and, now.

Im not sure but there are only 3 GTX 980M available so for those who want it now better act quick
-
What would you do with a single card?
Replace the card in your pre existing laptop?
Like of you have an Alienware 18 with 880M you would replace it with this 980M card?
Is that possible?
And if these are truly out.
Does this mean Alienware is about release a press release of their new refresh? -
Don't do it unless you are ready to cook your gpu! (literally)
-
Although I cant guarantee it, Alienware notebooks should have no problems recognizing the GTX 980M cards being sold. So yeah, 880M owners should be able to upgrade to a superior GPU both in performance and heat output
-
HopelesslyFaithful Notebook Virtuoso
Get 980m now then Pascal 16nm with better gpu in 2 years. if your just needing a new gpu like the rest of us.
-
If I had the 880M, I'd take that thing out and sell it now before the 980M hits eBay. Prices will drop. The 780M performs better than the 880M (temp., voltage wise) and it will be cheaper than the 880M. So, nobody will want to buy an 880M. Or may be less likely to buy one, especially with all of the issues it has been having.
Just run iGPU if it's your only PC. Sacrifice gaming for a few weeks.
P.S. If I get a 980M and it works, I'll be selling my 780M for pretty cheap - it's only 6 months old. -

Rofl 1k...I might as well buy a labtop and keep card and sell the rest of the parts

Its already out on Ebay
Not exactly cheap no

Auction style is ridiculous. That may go over 1000 EUR.

J.Dre is totally right, even though 2 is on ebay.com, you might still get a good bang for 880m, maybe 700 bucks? maybe 500? I would just go ahead and sell it asap!

The title (on eBay) says 8GB VRAM, but the description says 4096MB.

I would have jumped on that train Cloud, u know it, but sadly my back pains and my m17x r3 burning 3 cards in a row (geez that 2k could have been a new computer!) made me not to

You'll never see it unless you use the laptop while closed ??? In all seriousness the whitebook version of the GS60 appears to have a flat lid - I wonder if there's a way of tracking down the part and buying it outright
-
Well, I didn't OC much as it is against my mindset, I love to get the most out of my equipment and hate damaging them. Problem was extended hours of gaming (though I always repaste my cpu gpu once every 6 months and monitor temps all the time). I think it is because of my m17x. Probably it has a faulty mobo, it also does weird things with AC adapter, sometimes it just wouldn't recognize it. So I just gave up on it, right now it doesn't have a gpu
