Also apparently there is a damn warranty sticker on one screw needed to open the chassis :(.

While MSI folks at various forums keep telling it should be ok to open the chassis if you don't break anything, you are basically taking a risk you may lose warranty based on decision of a particular person handling you.

BTW besides disks, also memory upgrades are difficult. One more reason why getting proper SKUs with MSI GS60 is important (and kinda difficult as different countries get only very limited subset of possible configurations).

VRAM slots have always been backwards with pretty much any brand. They let 2 sit very convenient and hide the 2 last one under the keyboard etc which you need to take apart.

But SSDs too? Are you guys sure?

Also disregard the stickers. Its been said time after time by MSI employees that you can break them and they will honour warranty. Unless you put a crazy cat on top of it which urinates and scratch the hardware to pieces (yeah you know what I mean).

Ah, so this is what a 2880x1620 screen looks like at 15.6". I'd rather not use scaling in Windows 8.1, seeing as it is so poor and Windows 10 is still such a long way away. I have good vision (due to wearing glasses 24/7 - obviously poor vision without them) but those taskbar icons look too small for even my tastes. So it seems as though I made the right call with 1080p after all.

(referring to the pay to play multiplier)
if this happens this means multiplier is dead to me lol. I almost never buy a game at face value so it wouldn't affect me much to begin with but yea hells a no.

rofl on the 3k on 15.6 in hahahaha.

Also on the locked tight laptop...i would replace my wifi card to an AC card in my R4 but its under keyboard and stuff too -_-

You can get a much better deal buying the mSATA SSDs separately, no? newegg had some crucial 480GB for $220 and the 840 Evo 500GB is only $250 from Amazon - this one is at the top of the Passmark rankings. PassMark - Samsung SSD 840 EVO 500GB mSATA - Price performance comparison

Then why even have those stickers in the first place? It just seems illogical -- "yeah hey don't worry you can poke at the sticker all you want, break it shred it whatever we'll still honor the warranty, we put it there just for the lulz"

To stop the un experienced to actually destroy something when opening it, aka, oh a void warranty sticker, let's not open that.

Indeed, they know why they put those warranty stickers there. It's quite a nightmare to do upgrades yourself:

So yes, even if MSI says (unofficially, non-binding, on forum) "we will honor warranty with broken stickers on the condition customer didn't break anything", it seems still damn too easy to break something with such notebook design, no cat pee needed :(.

So no thanks, if I go with MSI, I would just stick with default components :)

Samsung SSDs are benemark machiens but are not performance kings in real world according to anandtech and tweaktown. I think tweaktown even removed the samsung cards off their list

Right before 980 released the same stuff happened 1500 dollar Titan-Z. Lemme give heads up to people. If you are a grad student + your research involves gpu computing, Nvidia will ship you a brand new Titan-Z for FREE!!!! (No kidding, a friend of mine did it :))

Most likely compute, and probably some people who think $1500 is a good deal. (it's not if you're just gaming, but at $1500 it's an absolute steal for those doing GPU compute)

I can confirm that the Alienware Orion backpacks are awesome as hell... but the straps and such fray after just a year, and you may need to maintain it. I've had mine for four years now. It still works okay, but I could really do with a new bag due to that fraying etc.

It's insulated (you could throw a cold bottle of water in it, leave it in the sun for 6 hours, come back and it'll still be at least chilly. Same with hot food and an air conditioned room).
It's weatherproof to a certain degree (don't drop it in water, but if it gets rained on or something spills the insides are dry).
The interior is very padded and solid and has LOTS of pockets and such for actual stationery. It's quite roomy.

As for the bag I want... it's an Everki Titan. Unfortunately they are not all that cheap, but HNGGG BAG.

titan is nice and all but it is lacking storage options like the beacon bad. I would love to see more pockets for storing small items in an organized manner..i want an item or two easy to access in a pocket not 20 items thrown into a bag floating around. Also some of the zippers could have been made to open wider, which is sad. I really wish it had the features the beacon bad with the size of the titan :/

    Hugs Titan!

Mainly got it for storage capacity since I travel carry-on only. It has lots of nice features, and that lifetime warranty is worth a bit.

Edit: Um I had been browsing the accessories forum and switched tabs to this one lol, didn't even notice how off topic this was till now. Um maybe we should stick to at least things at least relating to 9xx computers, and 9xx gaming. Laptop bags is a bit much probably

    Great review as always :)

One question about the power draw: since all benchmarks were under the 180w threshold, does it still make sense to look for a laptop with a > 200w power brick? I'm just asking because for instance the new Clevo models (651 and 670) have 180w adapters and this seems to be the current trend.

Probably, they have a laptop pictured. Based on the visible ports and no numpad keyboard, its probably 13-14" Hopefully there will be 17 and 18 too.

Still think I am just going to order a Clevo p651sg though, only thing that would really tempt me is a 1440p or 3k 17-18"

Actually never mind 120hz, g-sync, 20" narrow bezel display in the Alienware 18 form factor would all probably tempt me too.

Wow. I like taking machines apart and rebuilding them, but that would be a real pain just to upgrade the RAM or install an SSD. Starting to not feel so bad about not being able to get a GS60.

Not being easy upgradable turned me off with the GS60. If I'm spending that much, I need to be able to do upgrades myself without any hassle.

On backpacks look for the Gigabyte B7, I got that for my new shiny toy whenever it decides to arrive.

Don't pay attention to random claims. There won't be 985m. The only time it happened (485m) is because of the abysmal performance and the epic failure of 480m. Next gpu will be either 1080m or a new naming convention.

he also fast forwarded through the unscrewing part -_-

    there was:

285m (only higher clocked though..i thought it was larger)
    300 series is irrelevant

    485m
    500 series didn't have one
    680mx (technical was the 685m)
    780/880m were actually the 680mx

so with all of that 2/4 series has a x85m/x80mx

    Colors denote different series.
