With IHS i5-i7-E i have never had any problems with NT-H1, probably wouldn't with gc extreme either, but it is important to have good contact pressure with the heatsink, at least with thin paste like NT-H1
Not really i would say.. but better is better, and gc is an improvement!
-
Apparently it pumps out easily.
Laptop chips = bare die = do not use with NT-H1. -
Yes and we all go by that 2 year old thread!
The beauty is, we can all try different ones, check results, and keep what we like..
I would try to modify that heatsink tho! if you get more pressure in the back than the front, all paste will eventually get squeezed out. -
If you have the money, time, and patience to test every single thermal paste on the market, go knock yourself out. For the rest of us mere mortals, we're OK with taking others' word for it.
-
I'm just trying to throw in some actual hard data.
But anecdotally avoid MX-4 regardless of contact pressure. For some reason it pumps out very easily, and although temps are great when initially applied, after 30 hours of gaming temps already creeped up by 3C on both GPUs. -
NT-H1 is similar to CLU in terms of temps, but has been known to pump out fairly easily. I'd quicker recommend Arctic Ceramiqué over AS5; it does quite well and is definitely close to IC Diamond. I've been using it on my system for 20 days thus far; no problems yet.
-
ShinEtsu is really good for longevity if you don't mind a few extra degrees. It appears to be quite popular with OEMs due to its longevity.

If they could make laptops with cpu+ihs.. Probably would not work very well.. but would give even pressure at least.
Edit: and please guys! Don't nerd out all over me now!!
i have been looking at paste's for over 5 moths for what i should use on my first game capable laptop! thought i had finally found the grail!
no need to get fired up <3

I don't want to wait anymore I'm tired of looking for answers -
I loved the 3k screen on my aorus x3 plus. It only had a 870m and the 900 series was released right when I bought it so I returned it shortly after. It really grew on me and with something like a 980m 3k is a no brainer, unless you want more than 45 FPS on some of the most demanding games. I'm good with 30 though, and tbh I don't mind tweaking down AA and some detail to get it smooth, but that will only be a problem for a very few select games like Crysis 3. Chances are if it's running at about 50FPS at 1080p ultra then at 3k 30FPS would be around the average, maybe more depending on if you turn off AA which is no problem since 3k is such a high res anyways...
I just got the 3k because I'm basing this system off the the vast majority of games, which the 980m will be able to handle at 3k without skipping a beat, and am not going to get the 1080p just for the psychological comfort in knowing there wouldn't be a single game out there that couldn't be run on ultra with at least 60FPS... But I totally get wanting that kind of system, it was such a hard choice for me too lol. There is something nice knowing that you can run everything with max everything haha, but the 3k was just magical for me!
SO yea... All aboard the Gigabyte train, just pre ordered from XoticPC today with rush build so hopefully it'll be here within the next two weeks yay!!!Arthedes likes this. -
Start with Gelid GC Extreme and see how it holds up. I've a feeling there's no universal answer since it really depends on how good of a contact your laptop's heatsink makes with the components.
If contact is decent and you don't mind the risk, then Liquid Ultra is hands down THE best paste you can get. No other paste comes close to what it can do. -
Not without pumping out at least
-
I will
And sorry for stirring up the thread, but it also is kind of fun tho  Good quote lol
-
Well, crap. But it has an ok shelf life, right? If so, I can keep it for later use as needed with my desktop. My system's coming with IC Diamond 24, but I'd rather not be caught unprepared in case I do need to pull the heatsinks, so I guess I'll be shopping for some Arctic Ceramiqué.
Edit: or maybe not - from the same reviewer, apparently Ceramiqué pumps out, too. -
- why is Afterburner listing my GPU as 540Mhz? Weird. And yes, this is during load. I mean, if the GPU is running lower (like when showing videos) the reading goes down. It just never goes above it. And when I'm running Ryse maxed out and getting 55-60FPS, I know for sure it's not running anywhere near 540...
Also, managed to get it to ramp up to 77 degrees celsius after game at 99% utilization for about 20 minutes. Not as cool as I imagined but the ambient temp is around 24 degrees in my room so its not too surprising. -
During load?? If not probably it clocks down dynamically
-
Still on auto fans in Crysis 3, still impressive as hell.
Also, Afterburner is probably requiring an update maybe. -
Ha, this was the update. At least it no longer crashed 64-bit clients. I'll take that. It had been a while since I updated.
Also, the 99% was on Crysis 1. I reinstalled it because I needed to do my yearly playthrough.
Still, all settings maxed, 1080 and 8x AA (which is their super taxing version) and I was getting an average of 60 still. Mighty impressive. -
You should try running the original Crysis 1 with DSR. People have reported it is much more effective than any of the AA methods available in game, and at 4K (4x DSR) the game simply looks gorgeous.
-
Oh gee, I so want to do this
remember the scene where you were looking to an amazing forest from a mountain slope / top (don't remember, it may also be in Warhead), or even better! The first sunrise looking over that bay was also amazing
damn it, I need a new laptop, its like my fix!
-
You <del>want</del> need a desktop, you know it.
-
Forget DSR. Crysis and Warhead in DX9 support SGSSAA (up to 8x) and HBAO+ using the 0x000002C1 and 0x0000000D flags respectively. Ultimate image quality if you have the GPU horsepower to spare.

I replayed Crysis 1 about a year ago, it's still one of my favourite ever games, still looks good and I like the atmosphere & desctructible physics of it. -
Yeah, Crysis and Crysis Warhead were definitely the best of the series and up there on my all-time list. Really enjoyed all facets of them--the sandbox gameplay, freedom, creativity, player agency, AI, physics and destruction. 2 and 3 were too linear and story-driven because let's be honest, the majority of FPS narratives suck. And it's weird how the AI and physics systems took a step backward even though the engine tech was supposedly more advanced.

Just found a review on Toms Hardware for the Auros X7 Pro (is it the first proper review we've seen of it, or am I having some brain freeze?!):

So its great performance and good efficiency, but not so great price. As expected. -
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
My main concerns with that laptop is the price, but also more fundamentally it's only got a 200W power adapter yet uses 244W when stressing the GPUs on their own! In fact they found that they couldn't stress the CPU and GPUs at the same time, because power throttling occurred due to the limited wattage of the adapter - when CPU & GPUs were stressed only 248W could be drawn from the power supply (only 4W more than just stressing the GPUs alone), there's a lot of throttling going on there! In fact, I'd be concerned that games that require high CPU demand wouldn't perform well - 200W just isn't enough for 970Msli + i7 CPU. They need a 330W adapter for that thing! (temperatures would also concern me in such a thin laptop with sli & i7 CPU)
link to page showing power consumption:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/aorus-x7-pro-geforce-gtx-970m-gaming-notebook,review-33061-10.html
(also couldn't find any reference to temperatures in that article)
(they didn't say what program or game they used to stress the GPUs and determine power consumption, so if it was something like Furmark then I'd discount their figures, but they don't say what they used (or I missed it!)) -
I don't think I've seen it posted already, so in case it indeed hasn't, here's the review of the MSI GT72 2QE by Notebookcheck.com:

Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
Well, fair enough, but I'll point out I never made any statements that warranted a comparison with a desktop system - all I've talked about is temperatures, throttling, and poor low wattage of the power adapter which is elucidated in that review, desktop comparisons don't come into it. (And some of the point of their article is that they're comparing it against a desktop in performance terms - so it's valid for them to compare them in that article anyway - fairness doesn't come into it.)Ningyo likes this. -
I'm probably missing something as, glancing through those reviews, I got the impression the throttling happens only when both CPU and GPUs are fully loaded which doesn't sound like a real-world scenario for the intended users (this is not a workstation).
-
Robbo99999 Notebook Prophet
Well, I mentioned in a post earlier that it wasn't clear how they had measured power consumption and the associated throttling - if they were using Furmark & P95 at the same time then no it wouldn't be valid. I couldn't see their methodology in their article when I read it. Play something like Crysis 3 or Battlefield 4 which stresses the CPU & GPU big time, then that's a big load on both components! Either way, 200W power adapter for x2 970M plus an i7 CPU is not enough; a 240W supply might be just enough, but not much headroom.Ningyo likes this. -
Hello, I have a 980m from clevo. Since dell doens't sell any alienware with 980m, this is really only the card alienware user can get.
I have tried 980m in m17x R4, m18x R2 and AW17 R1.
With all three vbios available right now.
v10 (single gpu for clevo), v12 (sli gpu for clevo) and v0A(msi)
I am not a newbie, I know what I am doing. I've done everything including unlocked bios, disabling IG and blah blah..
But nothing seems to work.
I've posted it here.
http://forum.techinferno.com/alienw...vo-980m-alienware-m17x-r4-m18x-r2-aw17-2.html
Can someone help?
I am sure this is vbios problem. -

Anyone buying aftermarket AC/DC adapters? Or are most of these issues with the on-board DC/DC regulation?
-
Wait you are trying a Clevo card on an Alienware? You are heading to brickfest! I remember some people did this back with 680m. If I am not mistaken we should have some guides posted on the forum about it. But Dell 980m will release today. So I wouldn't keep trying, just send your Clevo card back and wait until the evening to get Dell one.
-
@maxheap
Dell is not releasing 980m in any near future.
You can check the inf file of new nvidia driver, and only AW13 860m is added.
I am sure dell is not announcing a new AW17 or AW18 with 980m. -
Since the 780Ms were released, it does not matter what card you get. 780M clevos work in AWs and vice versa, and so for 880Ms. We've not seen evidence yet that 980Ms are doing the same thus far. More than likely the AW could need a BIOS update to support the 980Ms, which will come out when the 980Ms are released barring a full refresh of the lineup (which is not likely).
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
If not, what else could they be announcing today? -
I guess some new desktop and AW13.
-
Yes you are right.
I've been using 780m and 880m clevo without any problem in alienware.
The hardware is just the same, it's only the vbios that are different.
Anyways, no one tried 980m in alienware yet even in Uncle Sam? -
Oh no doubt. The AA in Crysis was always a massive resource hog for little benefit.
I'll try it tonight without any AA and see just how big the drop is. Would have done so yesterday but Afterburner was showing my core clock as 540Mhz and I was worried that the bench wouldn't be representative. Turns out MSI was just being weird.
Yup, that's the level I always bench on every new machine! That sunrise, amazing. It's also where the game dropped to 50FPS on ultra with x8 AA. I have a save just at that spot and can't wait to see the FPS shoot up once I use some actual efficient AA (or DSR). -
Did some number crunching now notebook check has the game benchmarks for 980m (best to use all benchmarks from the same source.)
There were 13 games listed that had benchmarks for 780ti, 980m, 970m, 880m, and 870m in which the 970m had below 60 FPS. I excluded games with above 60 FPS since above that rarely matters (60hz screens) and often other factors restrict FPS at higher frame rates (CPU or frame rate capping).

Hey Vitor, can you tell me the model of the screen on your new laptop?

That's good to hear, I thought you needed to do some flashing with it (at least before Kepler, I haven't been following the high end Kepler with my average GPUs and 7970m that was Dell already
), but I remember some people having problem using Clevo cards in Alienware.

I had a read of your posts on TechInferno just now, you've already tried everything I would have done, and I think the advice from j95 is sound. Interesting that it will post when Optimus is enabled and be able to see the 980M in the BIOS and Device Manager, but not when set to PEG only (beeps of death on post). Have you tried running it in Optimus mode, can you install NVidia drivers then & does it then switch to the 980M when gaming in that scenario? (I wouldn't think it would work in that scenario though, non standard cards have always had to be run in PEG only mode).
GTX 900M series officially announced by NVIDIA!!!
