Not a tiny improvement its a generation jump features wise
Update : Multiple laptops were update for preorder on various websites in multiple countries, they were brought down after i and others reported them here, Nvidia is WATCHING lol, Anyway we did dig deepers and according to the very same websites official orders pages will go up October 7 Shipping at OCT 11 is 100% legit now (it was previously a rumor) so if you want a 970m/980m laptop oct 7-11 is the date.
-
Awesome news!!! Pricing? Release date for the mobile cards?
-
It's funny how a 680M on battery gets 35fps in LoL when i can get 120+ fps in CS:GO on battery with TWO 780Ms... >_>...
That being said, I like the idea of better battery life. -
780M had a tiny improvement not like this one though, plus 2x780m vs 1 680m its obvious it would be better
More about laptops is coming (the event is still going, will last a whole day 24hours) -
The point they're making is that battery power = too little to game on. Which is true. But if my battery can handle 2 x 780M + mobile i7, there is NO WAY that you'd get 35fps in league of legends on a 680M which draws less power.
-
The issue is not if your battery can power it or not because they can but they have bios/software limition and not optimized for it, there are laptops with 40watt gpu that still throttle to hell on battery, people get around that with tools and such etc , but with maxwell nvidia was able to increase performance a lot on battery while using much less battery consumption somehow than the very same laptops that was getting throttled.
You are getting much more frames and using less battery, even if you get around battery throttle with tools you will not get +30% more battery but instead battery will die faster unlike maxwell, it's very impressive for real portable gaming -
Did they announce whether/when the aorus x3 was going to be refreshed with a (presumably) 970M?
-
Nope but it's pretty much given that it will, Rumor is laptops will ship 970M/980M OCT 11
gigabyte p34v3 getting 970m and p35 getting 980m is confirmed too -
If I don't game on battery (I never do) and am already running with a 870m (x3+), is there anything to get me really excited about for an upgrade to a 970m, apart from the chips running a bit cooler?
-
Basically 970m got about 40% more performance over 870m while being much cooler plus ton of extra features i already listed above, depending on how far you can overclock it the gap is likely to be higher when overclocked
-
Wow, that's a pretty big difference, I guess I'll be returning my x3+ within its 7 day refund period....?!
-
I'm not denying that maxwell is indeed better on battery, but I:
1 - Find it hard to believe a 680M gets 35fps on LoL on battery
2 - Still say that the 680M battery gaming numbers are fabricated in such a way that it oversells the benefits of the 980M
3 - Is not applicable if awful artificial limitations make battery gaming performance super bad.
I've been able to game on 280M on battery with "ok" performance in games. I've also been able to do AMAZING things on battery with this laptop with two 780Ms (though the battery life would not nearly keep up for long I'm sure). A 76kW/h battery or an 86kW/h battery should be able to get fairly decent gaming performance with any mobile GPU that actually works. In other words, I think this is just exaggerated marketing, and that annoys me. I really really hate seeing that stuff.
All the above being said, I like what the 980Ms are shaping up to be. I still wish they were full GM204s, but stillKing of Interns likes this. -
980m with slight overclock can reach 880m sli power yet its getting 60 frames only in tomb raider game, as usual these numbers are not actually fake but doesn't present normal use, nvidia might have added supersampling + AA etc to to the ideal situation to give 980 the advantage, you find lol numbers weird when tomb raider getting 8 frames on 680? lol it does throttle a lot but not to 8 frames only unless this was on ULTRA+supersampling etc
The fact though is they have increased the performance a lot while increasing the battery, they wont lie about that and reviews will show it otherwise it will backfire on them.
You will return it, at least for the resale value~ -
I decided to focus on LoL because I haven't played Tomb Raider or Grid 2 much (if at all), so I don't know... but LoL runs on ANYTHING. I'm sure people could get over 35fps on iGPUs on battery in LoL. I highly doubt a 680M gets that.
Maybe SSAA 4x + TressFX + max graphics in TR will get 8fps on battery, but that doesn't explain the 60+fps on a 980M either.
It's all marketing and it's something that keeps happening. It's probably tailored in ways that you can't know; maybe settings are turned down for 980Ms? Who knows.
Anyway. I DO NOT DOUBT THAT THE 980M CARDS ARE BETTER ON BATTERY AND PROVIDE EXTRA BATTERY LIFE COMPARED TO PREVIOUS KEPLER CARDS. What I *do* doubt is the validity of those FPS counts using 680M vs 980M on battery. That is all that I doubt. -
LOL even runs at maximum settings except shadows at 1440x900 and 60 fps on my 9650m gt ddr2, so not exactly a demanding game XDD2 Ultima likes this.

Killerinstinct Notebook Evangelist
On laptops like the gt70 and gt60 they auto throttle down to 300 MHz when on battery , hence the comparison is valid , I don't think clevo or alienware does this but I'm not sure , I only know of MSI -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
now they just need to launch the p34g v3 and the new new razer blade
Killerinstinct likes this. -
Then in that case, it's proprietary and not an actual set-in-stone thing. I know Clevo doesn't do it. I do not think AW does it either. If they were talking about MSI alone well... sure. But then that's on MSI for artificially limiting their users.
-
Not only MSI, most laptops are like this even razer blade or at least the previous one, alienware 14 suffer from this too, its the other way if the laptop is not throttling on battery then the company that sell them made adjustment by themselves
-
What are you talking about "Clevo doesnt do it?" They absolutely do. These batteries cant handle the power requirement of high performance cards. Put up RTSS and start Valley and unplug the machine.
In fact if the clocks do not drop (such as the case with the modded vbios on 880M), the system shuts off when it gets switched to battery to avoid damaging it from the power draw.

Throttle on battery is a known thing cross laptop gamers nothing new just glad nvidia did address that.
-
Battery Boost has been out for more than 6 months if that's what you're referring to. It dropped with the 800M series.
-
Damn it. SOO many GTX 980 and 970 news specs and benchmarks reviews videos already available. But only a few slides of the mobile versions.
-
Maxwell mobile isnt "officially announced"
The slides got leaked, Videocardz just posted them. You cant find any mention about GTX 970M or 980M on Geforce.com but 970 and 980 is there.
But it should be announced very soon for sure.
If anyone wants to read about Maxwell GM204 abd the architecture in-depth, Anandtech wrote a really good piece about it here:
AnandTech | The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Review: Maxwell Mark 2
Btw, some reviews manage to overclock the 970/970 to 1400MHz. GM204 overclock like beasts

Enhanced version according to nvidia, Previous version you get extra battery but performance is bad still.
New version perform much better on battery without sacrificing battery life, you still get battery time increased, if Nvidia increased performance at cost of eating the battery faster then this new feature would be nearly useless and it wouldn't be anything speciall but thankfully they did pull it off
I did read a review of the 670 ftw evga it was faster than the 980 without any extra overclocking it lol (its slightly superclocked by evga)
it cost 369 and beat a 550$ card wth nvidia, 980 should have been 449 max -
I've seen reviews of the DSR running with 3240x2160 for skyrim on a 1080p looking better and running better than 8xMSAA. Which is quite impressive. (though this is tested on a 980 desktop GPU)

Those smart filters is just a gaussian filter. GeDoSaTo is the same but works for older architectures and this DSR should be too. BTW these smart filters are useless for 4K but DSR works with 1.2X-4X so it is useful afterall.
-
DSR will be very helpful for 980M notebooks with 1080p display for sure.
Should give the GPU a run for its money since its demanding as crazy. Its like downsampling just easier to enable.
GTX 670 is nowhere close to a GTX 980. Not a chance on earth. What were they smoking?sasuke256 and transphasic like this. -

Comments on the slides:
GTX 980M is how much faster than GTX 880M:
Skyrim +78%
Battlefield 4 +42%
GRID +85%
Metro: +51%
Watch Dogs: +78%
Is this because it use less power than GTX 680M and therefor can run higher clocks on battery which give more FPS?
Where is Alienware?
Aorus X7 with GTX 970M SLI. Can you imagine the power? You got a thin notebook giving the thick Alienware 18 with GTX 880M SLI a proper spanking.
***Beyond*** 1080p? Me likey
So where are the higher res displays for our glorious gaming machines?
Luckily we got DSR for Maxwell and a ton more memory bandwidth with GTX 980M compared to GTX 880M. Should give it a proper spanking for sure.
"AAA gaming"
Because of its greater bandwidth.
"Desktop class gaming"
Because it more or less match a GTX 780 which was a high class desktop card with 250W TDP

I've got a few days to decide. I tend to replace laptops every 12-18 months, so if the a refresh doesn't hit the UK for 2-3 months then I'll probably hold onto it. I frankly highly doubt that there's a 14in or smaller laptop coming out in he UK with a 970M or better GPU before November (you can't get Razers here). Because otherwise, this X3+ is really great.
P. -
Same boat as you..Where did you buy yours?
It is possible to get a razer here. For that you need razer US send at Razer EU which will forward to you for you benefit the waranty). Little bit longer but doable.
Smaller ther will be MSI GS30 with the external GPU (Jan/Febr 2015) or the new P34G V3 -
In the UK, overclockers UK - they've been great. I don't really like buying from overseas because if there's a warranty issue then it's a royal pain in the bottom to get stuff fixed. I really dislike the external GPU MSI, looks horrible and I need real power + mobility together. I'll take a look at the P34G v3 though...
P. -
GS60
Gigabyte p34g
These will get 970m confirmed
RB is getting is getting its no brainer not confirmed though yet
plus you are from UK, book a plane ticket to US get your laptop and return would cost the same lol since your prices there are overpriced gigabyte and msi gets you international warranty as far as i know -
Razer and Aorus likely won't have a refresh with 900m series for at least six months. They seem to be lagging behind the bigger OEM's when it comes to new product release. The X3+ just released a month ago, but now it's seriously trumped by the 900m series and makes the X3+ a lot less appealing unless they can do a quick change in silicon by the end of the year. But that would tick off the current X3 owners. But such is the way of technology.
-
Technology move fast but we have asus announcing GX500 ages ago that its coming with 860m the same with Alienware (A13) these cards were released over half a year ago already if they want to take a whole year to release something that's their problem, its not that they hate money but rather focus their resources for mass market laptops instead of gaming laptops and the proof is that lot of these laptops are filled with bugs and issues that would have been easily resolved if they actually did focus test these laptops for 1 week with few gamers.
Nvidia already send these cards months before release for OEM to test/etc so technically 860m was out for almost a year at their end,
Either way they are coming no one wants to miss the black friday and holiday rushNingyo likes this. -
OC UK are a little more expensive but great service . I beleive you have 14 days reutn policy for return it
-
I know this. But all I'm saying is don't expect anything from Razer or Aorus for at least another six months if that's what someone is waiting for. The new Alienware 13 may features the 970m, as they have not officially released specs for it yet.
-
Yes, this is the point. The lag between a big announcement and actually getting a laptop with the new card delivered to your door is, in my experience, generally in the order of 6 months. Sure it varies and there are examples either side of that. But retailers like wingnut will have a much better view on this than me.
P. -
WingNut is right about Aorus and Razer. It took six months after the first X7 was released when X7v2 was available. And it will be about six months difference aswell when X7 with 970 will be released maybe right around November. Laptops can take a month or two to release after being announced. I'll be expecting a X3 refresh early next year, by that time I have enough savings aswell so I can replace my G46vw
-
The Clevo, MSI, Alienware builds will have this tech available for order shortly after it's officially announced (mid October?). I'm not a retailer, I just spend too much time benching and reviewing...
Mr Najsman and Tonrac like this. -
OCT11 Shipping date is what the leaks were saying previously which had all leaks correct (date of reveal/performance/etc)
gs60 with 970m already up for preorder in some countries for example -
Hi everyone! New user here. Does anyone know when MSI is supposed to make its announcement with regards to the new machines equipped with 970Ms and 980Ms ? From the specs so far, should a GT72 with a 970M be expected to beat, all other things being equal, a GT72 with a 880M? Thanks!
-
They seems not too concerned with the the X7 v2 ; but maybe they will not do the same mistake. Curious to see how RB gonna to manage..Now they have a direct competitor with the X3+ ; Maybe they gonna to do the perfect laptop with a more evolutive laptop -
I have found this by just typing in url's
http://www.geforce.com/geforce-gtx-900m-ultra-light-gaming-laptops
Url clearly states 900m gaming laptops. And it doesn't say "Sorry, the page you are looking for can’t be found." rather like on this URL:
http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-980m
But instead it says "The page you have requested is currently undergoing maintenance and will be available again shortly."
Meaning we can see an update regarding 900m series on the official site soon?
EDIT: They just literally changed it to "Page not found". So the maintenance message doesn't show anymore -
This is great news! Hopefully I can put the 980M in my M18X R1.
