Should I buy a bulky 980m or a sleek 970m? What is the performance difference between the two?
Is it worth the extra weight to carry a 980m around in your bag?
Why is the 980m or 970m not on the official nvidia site yet?
-
-
oh yeah G751 with 970M/980M !! I love Asus's yes
-
True, which means they also realize they screwed up the 780M and really dropped the ball on the 880M. So much so, they're too ashamed to compare them. They have to go back a couple years and take the 680M and put it side-by-side with the 980M because the 680M was their last successful or "good" GPU.
Wait. What? Was I describing NVIDIA? Felt like I just described AMD.

Does anyone have a link anywhere to all the slides used during the presentation including the desktop slides?

They haven`t presented mobile 900M series yet. Nothing is official like the thread title states.

When will the mxm modules be up for sale!? All people care about is getting new machines lol

Did you notice the slide saying over 2x the performance of your 680M? Should run cooler too

So far no MXM cards on ebay. Early october maybe

It's a shame I can't afford to put money to one. I like to fantasise though
in the meantime I will OC the 680m till it melts. It should play everything if I do that. M15x only 1080p remember.

Where do you get that the 780M was a failure? I was saying I *CAN* game fairly heartily (though not with much battery life) on 2 x 780Ms + mobile i7. In other words, the fps from the 680M is far far too low... but in terms of power drain, the 680M is far less demanding than 2 x 780Ms (or even 1 x 780M) so it must be artificial limitations posed on the GPUs that would make a 680M get such low FPS as 35 in LoL
Well ok, but how does that apply to the 680Ms? The 680Ms preceeded 780Ms (which lack the "feature" for my model) and the 880Ms (where the feature claims to be introduced by you), which means the 680M having it should be baloney XD. Also, please note my stuff DOES downclock/lose performance on battery, as it should. I am simply saying I do not get NEARLY that little performance in games on battery.TomJGX likes this. -
I was talking about your comment that Clevo machines don't do it, not referencing your 680M cards.
And if you are having clock drops, you're having clock drops... I am sure I could game on battery too, 732 core is still quite a bit of oomph, I just never bothered to try.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk -
Ok, let me rephrase: We don't automatically go to 300MHz clocks and get garbage for performance the millisecond we hit battery on Clevos. If we downclock it's due to lack of power from the battery; not because of some firmware feature that artificially cripples performance more than it needs to.
-
But we have heftier batteries as well, do we not? It may well be the machines dropping so low are doing so out of necessity also.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk -
I didn't say the 780M was a failure. I said they screwed it up, just a tiny bit.
I'm a fan of the 780M. I own a 780M. I'm not against the 780M. But 680M -> 780M was a bit screwed up compared to 580M -> 680M. -
Meh, GTX 680M was last gen true gem.
Great balance with temperatures and overclocking ability. -
No, we have the same kind of batteries as MSI and stuff; 6-cell or 8-cell 78kW/h as far as I remember. AW actually has better ones IIRC, at 9-cell (I think) 86kW/h. My old D900F had a 12-cell 96kW/h that gave me less life than my 78kW/h
I can agree with that... seeing as how I need the modded vBIOS to use 120Hz without artifacts >_>... they were not perfect. -

1. Display port 1.3
Isn't display port specifics just released. I thought it takes years for a standard to be adopted by consumer products. Do you have a source?
2. Was waiting for their announcement on HDMI 2.0. But this begs me to ask - If a notebook GPU caters HDMI 2.0 standard, does that mean the laptop will automatically have OR we need to wait for laptop manufacturers to adopt the standard? Answers would be appreciated. (I'm looking in the angle of Clevo) -
Wait, its get better.
Here is a challenge for us. 1501MHz on the cores. Who is up for the challenge? (Remember that GTX 980M have same core count as GTX 970)
Holy hell Maxwell runs high clocks easily

But Fermi @ 40nm -> Kepler @ 28nm was always going to be a bigger jump than Kepler 28nm -> Kepler 28nm. NVIDIA can't break the laws of physics (yet). I'm not quite sure what you're saying you expected?
-
Is there typically a long (e.g. month(s)) delay before laptop manufacturers release refreshed models with new GPUs and resellers get them in stock?
Say we're lucky and Nvidia officially releases the 900M series in mid-October. Is it reasonable to expect resellers to have new models in stock for order by the end of November?
I'm very antsy for a MSI GT72 (or maybe the upcoming Asus G751) and I don't want to settle for the 800M series. -
Look at the slides posted on the first page.
Those listed there should be first out I think. If not, then MSI and Clevo are generally very fast at refreshing their notebooks. I have no idea about Gigabyte or Razer or Aorus. -
Ah, then hooray, the GT72 and G751 are up there
When the 700M or 800M series were first released, do you recall how soon MSI models became available for order from resellers (e.g. in terms of weeks/months)?
October 11! October 11? May I ask for the source of this rumor? Does "ship" refer to shipment from manufacturer to reseller, or from reseller to customer?
Lol caring so much about release date is atypical of me, but I just want to know when I can start putting up my current laptop for sale.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Personally, I'd sell it NOW, and save my pennies to get the new notebook, configured as desired.
-
I would note the Aorus x7 970m SLI is listed on their slide. Not saying it will be out as fast as the MSI GT72, or Asus G751, but I doubt it will be a long wait.
-
I have the exact same question. I absolutely need a new laptop, and would be reluctant to wait until the end of November or December if that's when the new MSI GT72 with 9xxM cards arrive in shop. If they can be purchased on the 11th of October (or later that month), however, that would be heaven
Anyone have an idea of when we'll know more? Will MSI make their announcement with the dates today, after the 9xxM cards are officially announced?
-
Yes. This is all the thread needs to be about is how we can buy a 970m or 980m asap.
Let's scour the Internet and figure this out.
I just returned my freaking 860m because of this card and I do not want to wait long.

Oh I would, but the issue is that I need a laptop (1) at all times for work and university purposes, and (2) to order the new laptop.
So I need the new laptop securely on my desk before I dare to get rid of my current one.
@ J.Dre, forgive Astrongtower, we're all just giddy and restless for the new cards

See this is the R and D I am talking about that we should be doing. How do we obtain a 980m in a laptop now, even if we have to ...
BUILD IT OURSELVES! -
I used google translate and checked out pictures. Looks real nice and a little slimmer than the older model but just to big for my taste. Still more like a Desktop replacement. If I was going that big I would get SLI Alienware 980m.
But since I am not I'll wait for the 970m in a sexy form factor like G60, P34G, or Razer Blade ...
Listen Everyone!
I have created this thread for everyone that wants to help find the next 980m or 970m laptop without spamming this one.

Please post all links to sites that have any laptop listed with the 900m series Graphics Card.
Please post any information on Obtaining one of these laptops by any means necessary.
Yes this thread is for people super excited about getting their new laptop and have nowhere else to go and want to stop spamming other threads about their excitement.
My story is that I personally just bought a 860m Laptop and just returned it against my will. I did this because the leap in performance was too much. I just want to be able to play current games on ultra settings at 60 FPS at 1080p. I know these cards will give that to me for years to come.
As far as I am concerned the first MSI GS60, Razer Blade, or Gigabyte that lets me press the Pre-Order button has my credit card money!
So please let the comments and links come and lets find one of these laptops ASAP!
Which Manufacture will have a Laptop with a 980m or 970m first?

Here is information about DSR (Dynamic Super Resolution). Very important to read for everyone thats gonna buy GTX 970M or 980M. Will drastically increase image quality.

Lol they are doing a bit of an apple with that one. DSR also known as super sample AA, the original form of AA.

But now its super easy to use, Geforce Experience enable it for you, or you can easily manually enable it yourself.
Not to forget, now we finally get the brute power on notebooks to use it

As I told, limiting this feature to only 2nd Gen Maxwell cards is stinky move and it puts shadow on hole feature at all. Gratefully Nvidia understands this however this acknowledgment takes a fight with their greedy. Take a note that they specifically underlined "similarily powerfull GTX cards" so in the worst case except 2nd gen Maxwell only Titan and 780TI, 780 will be used. In the best case you can launch geforce experience with key /DSR and enable this for every Kepler mobile card.
-
I have been reading these threads and it seems to me a 980M can match a R9 290 desktop in games? Secondly the asus one comes with 4gb vram, will there also be an 8gb version (any brand)? I suspect 4gb might not be too much in the near future, thanks.
-
If your game has built-in SSAA or can support SGSSAA/OGSSAA thru Nvidia Inspector, that is always gonna be a better alternative in terms of performance and IQ. DSR is less optimized and will run into issues with HUD scaling like any other downsampling method, but it seems to support many more games (including DX10/11 titles unlike Inspector and GeDoSaTo) and is much more intuitive.
-
This thread is misleading. They did not announce the 900M series, yet.
-
yeah, but there is one test of the 980m that says it will give around 9000points on 3dmark fire strike....and that's put
on my face because in my country I cant upgrade to 980m
Videocardz also posted some leaked Fire Strike benchmarks for Nvidias upcoming laptop GPUs, and they look impressive. The GeForce GTX 980M and 970M scored 9,364, and 7,403, respectively. The GTX 880M, which is Nvidias most powerful mobile GPU at the moment, got 5,980. AMDs best mobile graphics chip, the Radeon R9 M290X, got 5,294 in the same test.
