I like my Phantom 410 but I really do need to replace those Corsair fans at some point... NZXT should have made the motherboard tray removable, this is the first case I've had without one since I had an Athlon 64.

On another note, it amazes me that the price of the 780 Ti is still so high when the 980 appears to beat it across the board. Guess I'm gonna have to wait for GM200 to pick up a second card for my desktop at a decent price.

By the time GM200 comes out, 780 Ti will be overpriced or won't be sold anymore. Now's probably the best time (and price) to get a second last-gen card for SLI before old stock dries out because current inventory won't be replenished. Once it's gone, it's gone.

Nah. SFF cases are great to fit two drives, fast CPU and GPU, two sticks of RAM. Not room for much else, but it works. I also have an SFF for my home server with six HDD's, an SSD, and an i5 CPU.

If you want SLI, lots of drives, and massive cooling, then stick with a traditional desktop case.

You can grab a Zotac 780 Ti for $388 after rebate. Of course it's a Zotac, and sadly still costs more than a 970.

    You mean this?

If true, then interesting how much heat the extra vRAM contributes to the TDP.

Yeah, no zotac for me... I guess I will just keep with one for now. It won't be a huge deal until I get an actual monitor anyway. As long as I'm gaming on my TV, I'll be okay other than ultra textures on poorly optimized games.

That's a better deal than a 970 considering that the 780 Ti is still faster than the price difference. Zotac is a good brand, they have the same parent company as Sapphire.

I need a reference blower design to go along with my ACX card though or my temps will go up.

Makes sense, putting a reference blower card on the bottom would get you best GPU temps.

Just need better drivers and potentially an unlocked vBIOS (and probably another update for Afterburner) At least for that Gigabyte card it's not even hitting 100% TDP even when core is OC'd to beyond 1500+ MHz. (core only though, no mem OC) Voltage control also seems wonky since +25 or +87mV both max out at 1.25V when benching or running games. And apparently SLI is really broken in benchmarks if you try to put any kind of overclock on the cards

I think I might actually put these cards aside until the next driver update lol

Yeah Maxwell voltage is locked down to exactly 2 Boost bins (+25 mV offset) unless you flash a modded vBIOS. But at least the Gigabyte has a higher than normal TDP limit. What's the max Power Target % you can set on your 970's?

lmao sorry should've said all that was second hand info, cards haven't even been shipped out yet :p

But yeah max power target = 112% = 280W, which should be more than enough to sustain 1600+ on core

If you're really hardcore, have a deep pocket and simply can't wait, well here's a hard mod for you 980 owners

Wow, that's a pretty massive difference between the power limits of the non-reference 970's. The Gigabyte card is the one to get like I said all along. ;)

I wonder if Kepler BIOS Tweaker works on these Maxwell cards. I'd like to see the MSI and Gigabyte cards increased right up to their 300W limits. Should be good for overclocking under water. :D

I'm actually more curious about those TDP figures. There was speculation the 8GB vram on 880M made it run hot, but john said he found it was the inductors that were heating up the memory too much and not the other way around. But if those figures are true, it's basically saying an extra 3GB = +15W, while an extra 4GB = +18W.

Very true, however we never had a 4GB 880M to test and see if the inductors would heat up the memory just as much. The 6GB 870Ms had no problems, so we must assume it was an engineering defect on the 8GB 880Ms only... but it was still a problem. Hopefully though the 980Ms do not share this problem.

Asus used a 4GB version of 880M in their G750 Jay-Z didn't they? But it's a non-standard custom PCB with less layers and a larger surface area, so not directly comparable sadly.

Yeah I sincerely hope nVidia doesn't screw up the 980M 880M style lol, that would be such a travesty.

Lol just looked at xoticpc and they are no longer offering the np9377 with 880ms or 870ms. Well after looking into it more I do not think I will be able to make a desktop work in the navy. My living conditions will be precarious and every person who asks about the space for gaming gets a reproach like: "shouldn't be playing games in the military" or other. Really helpful.

I did finish the campaign cheat free, but I do not remember the difficulty. It might have been on the one under legendary. That was back when I jumped with spacebar and melee'd with Shift, so... that was a longgggg time ago lol

The reseller just contacted me and they say GT72 with 970m will be in stock this afternoon (about 5h from now). I will go there and see for myself, hopefully they let me bench it. I will share u guys as much info as i can. It's hard to believe because NVIDIA did not even announce the cards, well, let's see.

I took a look to that website, it said 3&4G VRAM are for soldered GPU, and 6&8G VRAM are for MXM on both models. And here is the question: Why the hell that ASUS put a 980M w 4g on a G751? It isn't the way that author described

6-8GB is pretty much overkill at the moment. I think 4GB would suffice for the 980M. Unless the stuff runs cool perhaps more isn't a good thing like with the 880M.

It's kind of not overkill with the way devs are coding these days. 6GB is needed for Shadows of Mordor ultra settings, and 8GB helps even more. And more games are going to be doing this. I would like 8GB 980M SLI pls

Please run GPU-Z, 3DMark benchmark and log the temperature if you can. Even better, run Unigine Heaven and Unigine Valley. They are more accurate regarding real gaming performance than 3Dmark, and you get FPS results. Log the temps there as well if you can :)

I think the NDA for these new cards ends tonight or tomorrow

I guess that you've been had hook, line and sinker on the "6-8GB minimum vRam!" ticket.

3-4GB will be A-OK for the next few years, particularly at 1080P. Don't let edge cases (or misunderstandings about potential edge cases) with a game here and there leave you feeling that you need to have double that in this generation.

That enthusiast PC users are confused about what available memory on current consoles means and how it should be translated to PC requirements.

    nope 3gb is low
No one said you need 8GB too
3GB is low plain and simple, 4GB is fine you just will be unable to play very few games currently on ultrra, 6GB to cover these few games, 8GB is future proof no sign saying any game will need 8gb anytime soon
People misunderstand what a high vram actually means, sometimes the textures are not any better than games that require 3GB VRAM only but vram is not only about the quality of textures but also the variety of said texture, thats why many games use the same rocks/wall//etc textures again and again duo the limited vram

There are even next gen games only coming soon like the witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Unity and Batman etc that is likely to use high vram too
You think if i had 980m i'll play games on 1080p only? I'm suyre many will downsample+ton of AA+mods/ultra settings/etc since the power of the card is available and these things eat vram
No one is getting 970m/980m to play in freaking 1080p medium/high old cards can already do that you want to go ultra get the vram to match it
Watch dogs and many games already unplayable on 3gb vram cards on ultra/max duo the insane stutter/frames drops

Yes, yes... Good job. 4 days to launch, hopefully.
But I NEED to play Assassin's Creed Unity. Seriously.

Only a few more days, I reckon. Looks like they are out of stock of 880m for np9377 on xoticpc, ava direct and sager official website.

Yeah, sorry. I've been following the Great vRam Debate for the better part of this summer. I'll take empirical results over your crystal ball, sorry! :)

Threads like this on at Guru3D have some actual, you know, results and numbers.

For instance, this post, which references some excellent comments.

Please, don't buy the hype. I'm confident that my 3GB (2xSLI 780Ti) setup will be fine @ 1440P on my 144Hz display for some time. Even with those "ultra" settings in terrible console > PC ports. Even with downsampling and/or generous heapings of AA.

Don't believe the vRam hype. These mobile GPUs will still be magical with 3 or 4GB of memory.
