Maybe I just missed it but I didn't notice a price listed...?

Also, what's thunderbolt? I've heard mention of this before, but is it actually that useful?

It is a type of port for high bandwidth data transfer. It can also double as a mini displayport, which means it's a monitor jack as well as the HDMI that most laptops have.

    Time zones . . .

Also they probably are planning to make their announcement sometime AFTER 6am where ever they are located. NDA agreements likely also have a specific time/timezone.

I'm going to assume that Striker's reference to 9AM EST as when he will be on to talk about the machine is when the NDA ends.

    THEY SELLING 900m MACHINE ALREADY

Screw the NDA and the announcement as my local reseller already selling machines with 900m (i means yes someone is playing games on those machines)

The only thing weird is, 970m only, i see no 980m being sold. Now they're selling GS60 3K, GT72, GT70, with different specs but all with 970m. 980m will be late a bit i think.

Now im stuck in uni, as soon as they release me, i'll be there

Since NVIDIA is an American company, it's logical that we would have to wait for everyone to wake up and head off to work in that timezone. Mark my words, if it happens today, it'll be an evening announcement (from the UK's perspective).

NDA for resellers have ended here in Norway.
Asus G751JY with GTX 980M does cost about the same as G750 models did and the ETA for these machines are October 9th.
MSI GT72 cost maybe $500 less and ETA is October 10th.

Not entirely OT but FWIW my desktop Gigabyte 970s have horrific coil whine, well more buzz than whine, but it's bad. Gonna have to decide whether to RMA and pray for the best or return and eat a 15% restocking fee. So bummed out.

GS70 could be a good buy if the 970m significantly reduces internal heat on itself/neighbouring CPU. Would be keen to see a review of the new unit. Particularly as the soldered GPU outputs even less heat than the MXM.

    Try more like 9am PST

Get some hot melt glue and put it on the coils if you know which ones, as long as they don't get too hot (like > 100C)

ASUS G751 with GTX 970m will be released Oct 14 in the UK.

    Asus G751JT-T7019H 17.3-inch Full HD LED Gaming Notebook (Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.50GHz, 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 128GB SSD, Windows 8.1): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

The 980m is officially available today but is out of stock.

    Asus G751JY-T7009H 17.3-inch Full HD LED Gaming Notebook (Intel Core i7-4710HQ 2.50GHz, 24GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 256GB SSD, Windows 8.1): Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Interestingly there's only a £200 difference between the two models, between 970m and 980m.

One thing that confuses me is that the two models are listed everywhere on the web as having identical dimensions and weight, yet I remember seeing somewhere that the 970m ASUS was supposed to be slightly thinner/lighter/less bulky overall, due to less intensive cooling requirements. I might have to contact asus to find out.

Hi guys! I'm going to upgrade from a 4 year old Acer laptop. HD5650m, i3 350m, 4gb ram. It costed about 1100$
I've looked at laptops for almost 2 months and have liked the Asus and Msi's top of the line gaming laptops the most.
Now when the newer versions have been released with specs, I really can't really decide between the cheaper Gt72 and more expensive G751 (both about 2650$)...

Asus G751 have 980m, 4gb vram. The Msi Gt72 have 970m 6gb vram. Which is better for 5 years forward?

Im also wondering about how the screens and speakers compare...
On the old versions I've heard that G750 has the best screen, and that G751 have an ips screen?
The old Gt72 has much better speakers than G750 from what i've head, but the new G751 have better speakers than the already good ones?

There's been a lot of off topic discussion about vRAM but in general my opinion is that with lazy console ports, you'll need more vRAM sooner than you think.
5 years may as well be looking at 20 - similar predictability (ie near zero)
Be sure you've seen a TN screen and an IPS screen in real life before worrying. I personally can't see the speed advantage of most TNs, but love the color fidelity of most IPSes.
Bear in mind MSI has a practically non removable battery, so in 2 years you'll be getting 30 mins surfing without mains (j/k)
Check out Clevo (eg P170SM-A) at same specs as MSI/Asus before you seal the deal.

    Hey guys,

Does anyone have any info on the Gigabyte models w/ 970/980m? I want to see the price tags on these before I make any choices.
Also, do you guys think the cooling on the thinner models will still be a big issue for performance in this generation of GPUs? I want a high-end gaming laptop, but would like it to be highly portable if the hit on the wallet is not so big - and I don`t loose too much in performance.

To answer your question: they're very expensive. Most of them start at $2k.

Well, that is still on my budget - 1300 GBP max. But if gigabyte is not a good idea, what is a valid alternative? MSI gs60 will have 3/4 Gb versions, so I would like to avoid that if possible (or shouldn`t I?). Clevo is always an option, but the only model that has a 980m on my reseller (pcspecialist) is 3.8Kg heavy - though I heard about the upcoming model.

I'm not quit sure if you'll buy something under 1300 GBP (I am at a similar situation!). The simple currency conversion doesn't work here, even within the EU (the 970m Asus one is 1500 EUR in France, but 1400 GBP - more that 200 pounds more expensive), and if you're shipping from the US, you'll have do pay import duty, which is quit costy (not to say about shipping itself). I hope that these prices will go a bit down by January, but at any time point things in the UK will be MUCH more expensive than in the rest of EU not to say about US. Regarding the Clevo one - is there any 9x0 model already online? I cannot find one right now, it will be interesting to play with the specs (although from what I can see the Clevos in the UK are around the same prise point as Asus or MSIs if compared with similar specs)
