Don't you think the salesguy got confused with 8700 and 8800?
Seems more than likely to me...

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't 8600GT's the best cards you can get on a 15.4" right now? Is that likely to change anytime soon?

I have heard a lot of good things about the 8600. Sure it may not be a beast of a card, but it still plays games. It is a decent card from what I have heard. I just don't think it is fair IMO to totaly throw out the 8600/8700 cards just because they can't perform as well as the 7950. Games are made for the average joe, and the average joe isn't going to have a 7950 or 8800 GPU! Most people are like me. We buy a couple games for our free time, and as long as the game isn't freezing up every other minute, we are happy. As long as the car looks like a car, and the person like a person, we are usually satisfied. :) I am on a desktop right now that has a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, which if I am correct, would be considered pretty low end by most people here, but as a casual gamer, it is fine (and my RAM is only 512 MB's!). For a casual gamer, I think 8600/8700 cards will do fine as well, at least until 9XXX series cards come out. Not everyone has to play the most demending games at maxed-out settings. When my b/f gets his new nb, it is probably going to blow my desktop away even if it has only a current mid-range card.

the 8600m gt is the fastest 15" gpu, by a wide margin.

the 8700m gt might not have much of a market with the 7950gtx sitting right there priced similarly. thats all. (both the 8700m gt and 7950gtx are 17"+ only)

Right! 8600GT at 512mb is the most performant vga for 15,4" and 8700 for 17"

wrong. the 256 meg 8600m gt is the fastest (unless there is a gddr3 512 meg card somewhere). still- they are equal for all intents and purposes. even the 7950gtx earns only a few percentage points increased performance with 512 megs of memory over 256. its a much faster card.

the 8700m gt is the fastest dx10 card for 17", but the fastest card is still the 7950gtx.

DX10 requires Vista, Vista isnt mature enough right now... Stick with XP and DX9.

If your going to get a DX10 card in a 17" laptop you might as well wait and get a 8800 when and IF they are released :p Only a few months (supposidly) left before they are launched.

Seems like this thread has a lot of "8700M won't be able to handle DX10 anyway" sentiments, along with quite a bit of "games built for DX10 from the ground up are a long way off". I was one of them who assumed the 8700M wouldn't be able to handle it, however, this thread tells me that DX10 is here (although not necessary) in the form of Bioshock and the 8700M can, indeed, handle it well:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=159196

Future DX10 games will undoubtedly put more strain on the card, however, one would assume DX10 will become more optimized as time goes on, similar to how DX9 evolved.

So, with this in mind and with as little personal bias based on the card you happen to own as possible, would you say the choice is still easily in favor of the 7950 at this point?

I ask because I'm on the fence between picking up an 8700M 512MB now or waiting a few months for the 8800M.

if you have the 7950 now.... id say stick with it if you already have it... then jump to the 8800 series, which will be faster than the 7950 while having DX10, and for all those who like to argue, yes i kno theres no proof it will be faster, but with the 256 memory and technology it MOST LIKELY will.
If on the other hand you have to choose a gfx for the first time, just jump to the 8700.

for me how i think about buying a new notebook in the future: i dont think i will buy an other game notebook again. Playing games with desktop is somehow more enjoying, much cheaper and much faster than on notebook. But for now i do enjoy playing games at school or at lanparties i do will miss that in future.

edit: darn i posted in wrong topic :p

Well, from what I can tell by right now the 7950GTX will cost $100 more then the 8700M GT. If I'm getting the M570RU and if its upgradeable to the 8800M then would it not be better to save the $100 and wait for the upgrade? Also you might be able to sell your used 8700M GT to D900/D901 owners who might want a cheap upgrade and run 8700M GT in SLi.

Just curious though. Is the ATI HD 2600 as good as the 8600?

I just made a similar choice with my laptop purchase. I had to decide between dual 7950 GTX's or Dual 8700's, and also between a quad core, or dual core processor.

I ended up choosing the 8700/Quad core, because I think that will give me more playability in the future.

But that's just me. Also, if the 8800 comes out, I can replace them myself, since my laptop offers the ability to upgrade the gpu.

    Laptop Specs:

Sager NP9261 (based off of the Clevo D901C)

    Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q6600 / 8MB L2 Cache, 2.40GHz, 1066MHz FSB

Dual Nvidia GeForce 8700M GT MXM IV Graphics with 512MB DDR3

    2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 1 X 2048MB

    100gb 7200rpm HDD

    17" WUXGA LCD (1920x1200)

Hey guys, I'm new to gaming laptops and basically everything about hardware. My friend referred this thread to me, I hope you guys can help me out. I'm not too familiar with computer lingo, so forgive me, I don't know what stuff like benchmark mean. I skimmed through the topic, but I really couldn't get much.

Anyway, I'm planning to get myself a gaming laptop, (the Alienware m9750) and I'm not sure which graphics card to pick, the Geforce 8700M GT or Geforce 7950 GTX. I'm currentply playing CS:S Source, TF2, C&C3, and Battliefield. I'm planning to buy Bioshock and Crysis in the future. I'm looking for a card that can run all these games on high video settings (gotta long the facial expressions on TF2, though I've never seen them when I play >_>)

Which graphics card would work for me? I heard that a laptop's graphics card is un-upgradable once you install it, so I'm looking for a card that'll last a moderate amount of time. I also don't plan on using Vista anytime soon.

My friend tells me to go for the 7950 because " it turns out the 8700M is actually a closer derivative of the 8600GT, which is mediocre at best. So the 7950GTX will definitely smash the 8700M."

Is this true? If so, will the 7950 last, and will it be worth it? I'm just looking for answers in layman's terms, thanks for reading.

If you can wait until January then you should buy the new Alienware machine with the 8800GTX card. That card is superior to both the 7950 and the 8700 in raw performance and shading power.

If you can't wait then the 7950 should probably be the better pick for just about all games which are non-DX10.

I'd also advise waiting until the 8800m series ships if you have the budget and the time.

The 8700 is great for resolutions 1280x1024 and below, performing similarly to the 7950GTX and supporting DX10....

If DX10 isn't your thing or you want to game at 1920x1200 and cannot wait for the 8800m series, then get the 7950GTX.

The best advice is to wait for the 8800M GTX, at about 2200 $ you`ll get one fast gaming notebook , the Alienware m15x.
Or maybe the sager 5791 when they release it with the 8800M GTX in 2 days from now :)

in 2-5 years all will be, yea but so what.
When crysis had ultimate quality unlocked on xp it looked nearly as good as it did on vista with dx10.

Most people never even thought of the direct x they used, and lots of people still set settings to d8 and 7 to be able to run games better. I think its all pretty hyped, like many of vistas features.

I would get the 7950gtx as it is Far far better than a 8600m gt so i would say its a fair extent over the 8700m although if you do want to use direct x 10 the 8700 should suffice most games

    Er...thats just a M570RU.

The 8800M GTX's in the M570RU's are shipping atm. They should be available before Christmas. The 8800M GTX's in the D901C will be available around mid-January.
