Wth have you guys seen this?! Mobility 4860 and 4830 with 640 SPs and GDDR5! ATi is on a rampage.
-
that 4860 is seriously looking like it's about something....but it's also on a 128 bit bus....
-
what's so bad about MXM 3.0?
also funny read slide by slide about the Cebit presentation of the GTX 280m: http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/Tools/Print.aspx?CIID=138728 -
128bit + GDDR5 = 256bit + GDDR3. Check out this review on the RV740.
4860 is probably gonna be in smaller notebooks, maybe even 14 inch notebooks. That would be insane.
Also, here are some tests/benchmarks on the GTX 280M ran by the german version of Notebookcheck (Translated). -
"ASUS, Clevo and MSI are all showing notebooks based on the new GeForce GTX 200M and GeForce GTS 100M Series GPUs at CeBit 2009."
http://www.i4u.com/article23504.html
sweet, Clevo's laptop is probably too expensive for me. -
Very interesting results there. They matched it against the desktop 4850, and it didn't disappoint.
-
Has anyone seen any benchmarks of the 160M? That seems like it could hit the sweet spot. Though those new 40nm ATI chips are certainly looking tastey.
-
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_gts_150m_us.html
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_9800m_gs_us.html
GTS 150M only has 192 Gflops 13 billion textures/sec... Both are 256-bit 64SP same 51 GB/sec bandwidth 800MHz memory. But GTS 150M has lower shader clock at 1000MHz vs 1325 for 9800M GS, unknown core clock. -
Only problem is, most of those results were either ran @ 1024x768 or 1280x1024, after reading into those tests more. Those resolutions mean nothing when talking about these cards. Also, although it was compared to a desktop 4850, they downclocked it to match the Mobility 4870 GDDR3 specs, as seen in the Asus W90 (you can tell by the 3dmark numbers). Bah, we'll have to wait until we can get better tests (tests at higher resolutions)...
Though the Crysis numbers at 1680x1050 @ Very High look pretty good -
Poor Nvidia. ATI just rained on their parade.
-
i hate seeing all this stuff about new chips...make me sad i don't have them.
nvidia is finally got some competition and ...welll there not fairing to well ....intel may own the cpu market but we can now see what ATI has really been focusing on
-
Considering the GT260M or GT280M are not available yet, you may be jumping to conclusions.
And benchmarks provided by either company will always be suspect. -
well....ATI has really focused on the graphics department as of late. You cant deny that. the release of the 4 seris and the 40nm is amazing
just gotta see what nvidia does. i hope they make better cards and dont just rebrand. it ends up helping every one -
Very true. The 3X and 4X series certainly redeemed ATI, but don't be too quick to write off Nvidia.
Nvidia has been resting on its laurels and it's about time that ATI lights a fire under them.
I believe that every consumer wants competing companies to come up with better products as that merely provides customers wider variety and better pricing.
Incidentally, ATI really needs to work on its driver support. That's the main reason why I'm still not completely convinced about getting an ATI card yet.
Of course, there's always Dox.
Not sure when we will see 40mm cards actually being in laptops.
Edit:
Chaz's link for the cards reveals that the Asus K series will have the 40mm cards.

Link to K series.
http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=14515 -
That is definitely true
Better for us
Hopefully soon
I'd like to see real world game benchies -
funny thing is my lesson in economics today is about competition and monopolies
who will come out on top? no one knows but ATI is trying
they have released like 10 cards
-
The more the merrier
-
also lower the prices.
-
4860 with 128-bit?! Uninformed consumers are going to go nuts when buying a laptop!
-
Whoa... check this out guys.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-280M-Review.14565.0.html
It matches up the 280 against the 4870... -
and so the war of the mobile titans begins.
-
Notebookcheck also lists the GTX280M as better than 9800M GT SLI. That is really incredible.
-
Looks like the 280M is pretty competent after all... it trades blows with the 4870 in many games.
-
all I care is which GPU (GTX280m or Mobility HD 4870) will run Crysis or Crysis Warhead at 1680x1050 at High or Very High better.
Seriously other games that run at like 70-180 FPS, can humans even tell the difference between the FPS? -
is the GTX280m like equal to the desktop 9800 GTX?
-
I'm almost certain the GTX280 will run Crysis better because Crysis is known to run better on Nvidia cards.
-
The CPUs in that comparison are quite different -- it would be a lot more professional if they used the same CPU throughout and just varied the GPUs.
-
9800 GTX 9800 GTX+ 280M GTX
Core Clock (MHz) 675 738 585
Shader Clock (MHz) 1675 1836 1463
Memory Clock (MHz) 1100 1100 950
Memory amount 512 MB 512 MB 512MB/1GB
Memory Interface 256-bit 256-bit 256-bit
so not quite.. -
they were using E6600 vs X9100??? Jokes!
-
Not to mention they're running them at 1024x768 & 1280x1024 which makes the game CPU limited. Useless review essentially.
-
The 4860 128bit with GDDR5 is better than the 4850 256bit with GDDR3. So consumers are not going to go nuts... Especially looking at how 4860 is 40nm we will probably see them in a 15" and it will be cheaper than a 17" with a 4850. Its like the perfect match, portability with performance.
-
yeah, that would be a serious upgrade for most of them smaller notebooks.
i was more interested in the 4.0 gb speed...could be a typo though -
if 4860 is coming out in MXM-II, i'm definitely jumping on that bandwagon. Would be such a sweet upgrade!
-
they should have named it 9800m gtx+. the review was essentially a gtx 280m vs a hd4850. the hd4870 in w90 only has gddr3, it's only got half the bandwidth of a real hd4870.
-
per every ati owner or almost every owner...it is a 4870
it's just the low grade model or what ever fast one ati pulled...if that's what they did. (care of a few other members)
to me it looks like an over clocked 4850. same thing nvidia may have tried to pull with this gtx280m
we'll get more answers once someone gets these in hand. -
You're expecting miracles if you think the 4860 will be MXM-II peeps.
-
we have a right to dream for a bit, right? You just killed our dream
-
that chip or variation of it is set for a clevo notebook..at least i thought i seen that somewhere.
i think ichime found it. -
I'd like to see dual 4860s in a Whitebook/M17 if it solves Flextronics heat issues but if Nvidia cuts the price on their cards...and the notebook isn't a boat...I'd consider a Clevo M98xNU.
-
that laptop isnt a boat...more like an ocean liner..just like the w90vp. if big isn't and heavy isn't in for you....i say steer clear. because these things are heavy if your carrying them around all day long....
-
It's not so much the weight as it is the bulk....that's why I never picked up a Sager NP9262. The Whitebook/M17 has some nice dimensions being only 1.7" thick but I've said it before my dreambook right now is a 16" with a single-card 4860x2.
-
It sure would
It PWNS our 9600s by ALOT
Yeah, man
Don't shatter the dreams
Miracles can happen
-
all we need to do is convince AMD that it would be very profitable for them to release it in MXM-II.
-
do 55nm and 40nm (smaller) chips help performance? or is it just more cost effective?
-
your not getting that any time soon.
but maybe you'll want to settle for a 15'' with a single hd4860? -
Let's form an official petition
Any ideas how
-
It's both. Smaller process means the current part would consume less energy hence produce less heat and also will be cheaper to manufacture. Since it also takes up less space, they can cram more transistors to increase performance without exceeding the old TDP allowance of the 55nm part.
-
if you get hp on board, i bet they make it then.
-
Too bad I have an ACER
-
who knows...they still may make it....
