Even though the Mobility HD4860 has 128-bit memory, it will be faster than the desktop HD4850 which has 256-bit because it supports GDDR5 where the desktop supports GDDR3 only. The mobility will have around 65 GB/sec bandwidth where the desktop can get up to 58 GB/sec. AMD says that the mobility 4860 will outperform the desktop 4850 in 3dmark06 and it will be very close to the mobility 4870, but I guess we have to wait and see. I hope they are both MXM II and compatible with my laptop.

I wonder what the thermal footprint is like on these cards? Hopefully the power drawn is 35W or less, but then again, 640 stream processors is A LOT of computing power on one chip.
Any idea? Educated guesses? -
Looks like MXM 3.0, that's not to say there won't be MXM-III/IV versions.

640 shaders scoring more than 800 shaders on 4850? I couldn't help noticing there is really higher core clock on 4860 than 4850(650 MHz vs 500). Higher core clock helps out a lot on on these 4 series cards. And despite using 40 nm process, I suspect 4860 is near its max clock rating, and 128 bit memory is a bit of a bottle neck; imo these two card ought to be named 4810 and 4830, instead of messing with existing product naming.
Now they've decided to completely keep mobility and desktop model number in line, waiting a while for 4890 would probably make sense

But then again offering 40nm this soon after desktop counter part is pretty impressive. Perhaps AMD is focusing on this maret seriously this time... -
Well, it wouldn't make sense to call it a 4830 if it beats the 4850. -
i wonder what name with ati will give to the desktop part of rv740, like you said, ati tends to name desktop and mobility parts the same, but the core name 'rv740' doesn't suggest a x8xx name. -

It seems like it will be. When the notebooks with these cards are available, I'm all over them. I wasn't expecting 40nm notebook hardware to be around for another 6 months. GO ATI GO! Bring pain to nVidia. I want to see nVidia actually do something other than rename old cards.

A few articles say the reason they're so fast is because they went to GDDR5 and increased the clock speeds but the 4830 is clocked relatively low and uses GDDR3 yet it still beasts the 9800M GTX on a 128-bit memory bus...how? -

This is VERY VERY GOOD. Don't get me wrong, I love my notebook and it's 9800GS 512 MB but before I noticed this lappy at it's sale price I had wanted an AMD machine with an ATi 3650. I still want to go back to AMD/ATi, especially when I build a desktop at some point. Competition is good, VERY good for us consumers. Also I can see ATi producing a new IGP if they're going to 40 nm as well. Can you say Radeon HD 4200 IGP with 80 stream processors?

I think some posters don't understand GDDR5.
GDDR3 effective = 2x Memory clock
GDDR5 effective = 4x Memory clock
256-bit HD 4850 GDDR3 @ 993 MHz = 1986 MHz effective (Desktop card)
256-bit HD 4870 GDDR5 @ 900 MHz = 3600 MHz effective (Desktop card)
That means that you can do 2 things with GDDR5:
-Get twice the memory bandwidth on the same bus (Performance cards go this route, and it's cheaper - See HD 4870)
-Get the same memory bandwidth on half the bus (High end / Mid-range / low end - see RV740 for mid-range, and HD 4870 for high end, manufacturing costs are much much less) -
why did they name it gddr5 though? shouldn't it be g qdr5, for quad data rate. -
The naming scheme will not make sense if a certain laptop has the GDDR3 version. The GDDR3 4860 will be slower than the 4850. Bad idea there...
I would honestly call it the 5670. -

The fact that it's using GDDR5 on a 128bit bus probably means that this card will take ALOT less power, so I'm sure we'll see this in thinner, cheaper notebooks. I wouldn't doubt that you'll see these in $699-$799 notebooks by the end of the year. And that isn't to mean that all notebooks with the card will be that cheap, but some brands will most likely have very cheap versions around that price point.

I sacrificed the second SSD to make room for the x2 GPU.
Honestly it's not a completely unrealistic setup....zero chance of it happening but not unrealistic.
More realistic would be AW using dual 4860s in the M17 since they're rumored to be having heat issues with the 4870s. I'd bet they score better than the imitation 4870s that are in the ASUS W90. -
Wow this is amazing!... I was thinking of picking up a MSI GT725 just because it had the 4850; however, now I can wait for a 15" with a 4860 and it will prob be cheaper than the MSI GT725 and I won't hurt myself carrying around a 7 pound notebook

Btw if this is the case of GDDR5 vs GDDR3. Doesn't that mean the HD 4870 is x2 better than HD 4850? However, that doesn't really seems to be the case.... -

Wow, this is interesting. Maybe ATI will actually be a major player in the performance graphics card area. I've been a bit less than positive about Nvidia's recent offerings, which are more like renamed previous cards. If we could see an ATI card in the NP8660, I wouldn't be against getting it when I buy my NP8660, depending on its performance.
