Well... high end mobile GPUs have always been pretty expensive. No surprise here. The 480m is still about 800$...

What I don't quite believe is this:

" Performance wise, the card can be compared to Desktop GeForce GTX 560 Ti"

That's some serious performance for a mobile card. The 485m is between a desktop GTX 450 and 460, so that would be a big step up, like 25-30%.

Well, the GTX 580M is a GTX 560 Ti, so it will all depend on how downclocked it is.

I dont think MSI do high end gaming anymore, otherwise they just lost 2 chances of putting high end gpus in there

So what performance increase are people guessing about 580M compared to 485M? The same as 460M -> 560M? Little more clocks and the same TDP? 10-15% increase?

I doubt it, if atm GTX485 is like 10% faster than 6970 and nvidia is charging a premium for that difference, i would expect similar pricing of the GTX580m since its going still be faster, even if nvidia manages to produce it cheaper.

^You and me both. I love Nvidia's hardware.

It will be exactly like the 460M -> 560M shift. A GF110 transition, which allows a slightly higher ceiling.

There's really no other desktop chip in reach of the mobile platform.

The only step up from the 384 shader 560 Ti would be the 480 shader GTX 570. That requires way too much power, to fit within a 100W TDP.

Loftier heights have been reached, Kevin. We all know that the GPUs of the future are going to many times more powerful and hopefully many times more power efficient as well :)

I want a 22NM die gpu shrink already!!!!

Forever we'll be thinking of future product because the technology won't stop improving , maybe in future you get a GPU with better efficiency in terms of energy saving but still we'll remain our "I-want-something-better-than-this" thought.

We wont see this for a while, next shrink on GPUs is 28nm, probably in some cards on the next gen, maybe for the mobile market early next year or around ivy bridge.

The one before at 90nm? Also 40nm is a whole node (55nm was the half node). Mostly the intel 45nm and TSMC 40nm nodes will be very similar in scale. The overall nm of a node means little until you look into the technical documents and design guidelines.

Well the 485m performed like a 560m (same shaders, ROPS, etc.), it was just underclocked.

If the 580m is a 560gtx, then it has the same shaders and stuff as the 485m, just newer architecture and higher clock. Then I would expect nothing more than a similar 460m->560m boost, around ~10%.

I wonder how it will compete with the 6990m

You may get increased performance or you may get reduced power and heat (since the 485M was already a beast in performance). Typically Nvidia goes for for increased performance, but just keep in mind that some % of each is possible this time around.

I think the whole idea of the GF104 -> GF114 is to get better power management for the cores so that you can increase frequency but at the same time stay at the same thermal output of the GPUs. Which is basicly what 460M -> 560M did.

But you are right. Would be nice if they stayed at the same frequency as 485M and released a cooler running card with GF114. Interesting.

well for people with excellent cooling systems in laptops (like mine), we would be more concerned about getting faster speeds than cooler temperatures, especially since this is supposed the new flagship mobile card from NVIDIA.

If it is released and already demo'd on a machine in SLI then it's probably a Sager. AW never releases updated chips on release day.

Well the 570m is interesting, if it can perform as good as a 6970m then it will ne a really nice alternative as its price is closer to that of the 6970m(og going by the pricing of the 470m).

580m is available for configuration at Sager reseller sites now. +$595 option. For NP8150 485m is only +$295 now and NP8170 +$395 now. Why the $100 difference?

So much for selling my NP8170 with 485m...
