The most important impact... community.
The number one reason to play an MMO is the people you play with.
The number one way to create value in those people is to make everyone put value on the life of those around you.
When someone else dies in a no penalty game... no one cares. They lost nothing. You lost nothing. Die 100x and still no one cares. Friends dying in EQ or L2 made them less powerful and thus YOU less powerful.
Every game I have played WITH an xp penalty on death has created a community above and beyond anything you will see in games without it. They create lifelong RL friends out of strangers from around the world.
Games like WoW with "die a billion times it doesn't matter, success-guaranteed" create a community of entitled, spoiled brats who would kill people in RL to do %.01 more dps. -

I don't think the hinging factor is the fact that you don't lose XP when you die in WoW. It's that a game with so many players is bound to have a bunch of idiots. I think you're vastly overestimating the impact of an xp penalty.

I played FFXI and all that the XP loss death penalty in that game did was make me want to turn it off and throw my mouse in the trash. There is a death penalty in GW2 and it is just enough of one to make it a penalty. If like harsh penalties then I will just assume you live in texas and continue to not understand whats going on in your head lol

I can agree with this. I didn't like when they added in WOW and you had to go through the portal to Ghostlands to do ZA. Immersion was lost.
I don't mind the portals myself as I have grown accustomed to them in numerous games over the years. But what does bother me is constantly being placed in an overflow server. This effects everybody, and I see no sense in this in this day and age of phasing and super servers. I'd rather be in a different phase and do a simple phase with a player than have an invite pop up in the middle of a world event, or just after one knowing that if I accept, I will lose credit for it. -
i kind of get what u're saying. Ultima Online was my first MMO ever, and it really trained me to be a better "MMO'er" compared to even "good" to "great" gamers. certain penalties will help an "MMO'er" develop much better playing skills.
when u died in UO, your corpse is lootable after an amount of time. it made players be much more aware and prepared. it improved game play because we'd have to talk strategies and figure out individual "jobs" for everyone in the group just to go to the town bank. it was hardcore PvP'ing everywhere and anywhere. that's one of the reasons why there hasn't been an MMO, to date, that can touch Ultima Online at it's prime. it was a completely different beast compared to these cookie cutter MMO's of today. -
I did find out there is no penalty from dying from a fall when trying to do a vista. I missed a jump and fell to my death, and chose to resurrect at the waygate by the weaponsmith, and there was nothing to repair.

The reason that style hasn't really been repeated is because companies like to make money and, while you might find that entertaining, most people find it frustrating. Ultima Online was successful, but it wasn't a runaway hit.

Precisely, after WoW appeared, the success of a MMO in terms of player numbers kind of got redefined and given the development time and the look/feel of the game i got a feeling that GW2 was a rather expensive game to make.

to me, WoW didn't do anything for the MMO world except make it crappier. their main focus was $$$$$. i credit WoW with coming up with a pretty innovative HUD layout. other than that, all they did was make MMO's easier for the general public. i'm not a fan of cookie cutter anything.
i don't feel anything for any of these new MMO's like i did everytime i logged on UO. -
EVERY company's main focus is "$$$$$". A company that doesn't make money is a charity.
UO had 250,000 subscribers at its peak in 2003. If games like WoW hadn't come along, MMOs would still be a fringe outcast from the gaming industry and they wouldn't be nearly as popular as they are today.
It's fine to dislike something (I can't stand the Beatles) but it's quite another to handwave it away as irrelevant.

no, not EVERY company's main objective is to make money. if it was like that then we would live in a world of mediocrity. there are companies out there that are more concerned about putting out a superior product instead of just feeding grass to sheeps. UO compared to WoW is kind of apples to oranges. UO was the standard as far as MMO's. 250k subscribers is a crap load if u think about it. UO had a monthly subscription and u have to remember that back in those days, broadband internet wasn't even around yet. if u were on the internet, u were on some kind of crappy dial up service.
i also think that UO's community contributed to a much better online experience. the game was simply too advanced/hardcore for some little snot nose kid to pick up. i don't think i remember ever running into any little knuckle heads, in UO, like i do online now a days.
as far as innovation, game play, development, PvP, and sense of accomplishment, UO hasn't been touched in the last 15-20 years. i really hope GW2 changes that. it's been pretty fun so far, but way to early to make any final assessments. -
Yes, the objective is always to make money. If you have shareholders and you are not doing everything reasonable and legal to make the most amount of money possible, you are failing as a company.
UO was a very innovative game, since it was one of the first real MMORPGs. That doesn't mean that everything after it was terrible, or that MMOs should be solely the realm of the "hardcore". Like I said, subsequent efforts, including the Guild Wars series, have helped the genre to become more popular. That's a good thing.
I'm probably going to pick this up over the weekend. Seems right up my alley. -
I didn't say that WoW was a revolution gameplay wise or pushed the genre, but that the massive amount of WoW subscriptions redefined what people considered to be a successful MMO. As Hockeymass said, before WoW at 250 000 subscribers, a MMO was considered pretty successful, the millions of WoW subscriptions changed that. Suddenly, publishers saw a the possibility of a cash cow like WoW was (and still is i suppose) and thus the cookie cutter WoW clone was born and the focus of MMO devs shifted accordingly regardless of who likes it or not.
As for making money, the devs at ArenaNet might be interested in doing something different, but their publisher, NCSoft, sure is more concerned about making money rather than redefining the MMO genre. Hell, i was surprised at the August 28 launch date and i have a feeling the publisher had a say in it and as a result some things aren't exactly working at peak condition, the trading post for one is still under maintenance. -
trust me, i definitely see where u guys are coming from. we live in a copy-cat world, so all of these new cookie cutter MMO's don't surprise me at all.
i just have an entirely different view of a "successful" company. to me, a successful company should, first and foremost, concentrate on pushing out "their" superior product. if it were my company, making money would just be a byproduct of all the hardwork, time, and resources used. making money would never be the main priority because greed will kill innovation and progress.
maybe i just feel this way because i have been an avid MMO'er for so long. i've been there to see how the genre has evolved over the years to slowly accommodate to "the norm" and "noobs" rather than the "hardcore" MMO fans. i still believe that if u release UO today, with an updated graphics engine and mechanics, it will be a big hit. the game MADE u have to be aware of everything the moment u log on. -
The whole design philosophy behind GW2 is that it wants to give an experience with minimal gamer frustration.
Instanced loot, instanced resource nodes, zone-shared exp, rewards for quest / event failure, lack of death penalty, viable leveling exp from crafting and pvp scenarios, and tons more things.
Personally I think anything is good only in moderation, so this is kind of lame. GW2 wants to wedge into every MMO gamer and nonMMO gamer niche possible by making itself as accessible and painfree as possible, and I really think in that process it loses a lot of the magic that makes up a memorable community-based game. -

Despite some of the things I don't like about GW2 (no real death penalty, port points a little TOO convenient) some of the things GW2 has done are amazing.
GW2 is a game-of-the-year contender at the very least and even with its flaws, immensely better at release than WoW has ever been.
I do NOT think GW2 will displace WoW as it will be "too hard" for the vast majority of WoW's customer base.
Hockeymass... every game has idiots. WoW is only special in that the sheer % of its players that are horrid, and the fact the game actually encourages people to play worse and worse as it rewards awful play. WoW has actually redefined how awful a player can be by making the bad MUCH MUCH worse. It is the reason why it is the birthplace of huntards and why max-level newbies are the norm.
At the very least, EQ and L2 (before pay-to-win hit) and any other game with -xp on death mechanics makes sure those horrible players don't stay max level.
If you suck, you go backwards. In WoW, even the worst player eventually will reach max level... probably in just over a week... -
Huntards. lol. I remember one having a spazz on vent because I wasn't healing him. I informed him and the raid that I would not waste my heals on players who insisted on standing in the green stuff and refusing to move. Move out of the goo, and I will toss you heals all day long. He then screamed he didn't wish to lower his DPS by moving. roflmao
The funny part was we had already done LK hard mode months prior, and a few of us agreed to help this guild down him in easy mode. I gave up after a couple of bosses. If players only care about meters and not game mechanics, they weren't going to get far anyways. I had a hard enough time during progression, that I didn't wish to go through it again with idiots.
edit** I then chose a huntard Ranger as my first toon to level in GW2.

I disagree completely. I don't have the time to level hardcore forever or the time to spend hours researching how to do X. I just want to play. It's why I don't pay a monthly subscription for any MMO. Just logon when I have time and have some fun. I don't care if there is a small minority whining the game isn't hardcore enough for them.
It's a game, it's supposed to be fun. You want to be hardcore, play some SC2 and be a grandmaster then. -

I am having a blast on this game so far. playing around with different classes and builds is bringing me back to GW1. I just wish that changing builds and spec was a little more accessible like GW1. After this game gets polished up, its going to be a winner for sure.

/shrug I ponder if you are one of those people who think forever is anything longer than a week.
No MMO is hard for any reasonably intelligent person.
Some of us just aren't having fun unless the game presents at least a little challenge and no guarantee of victory.
Given your needs Hula, GW2 may actually not be the game for you.
It doesn't have a monthy fee, but it takes longer than a week of casual play to max out.
You won't have to study forever to play proficiently, but actually playing the toon for awhile will be necessary to insure you become proficient as a player. (nevermind actually skilled)
The typical /faceroll /faceroll /rollneedoneverything macros from other MMOs won't cut it for even proficient.
On the other hand, those that can adjust to GW2's level might really benefit and grow personally. -
The point is that not everything in the game has to be difficult. Like someone mentioned before, in UO you had to assemble a party so you wouldn't get ganked while going around the corner for some potions. That's fun to some people, but not everyone. There's a difference between "presenting a challenge" and "being irritating". In some MMOs, it's pretty easy to get to max level, but there are legitimate challenges to be had at the highest levels of play.
Frankly, I'm not even sure what point you're trying to make besides "MMOs shouldn't be for everyone" and I disagree. I think everyone should be able to pick up an MMO and have fun with it, but you shouldn't be handed a free pass to everything in the game. There's a difference between easy and accessible and just because a game doesn't exclude people you might refer to as mouthbreathers doesn't mean that it's entirely too easy, it just means that the barriers to entry are low. -
Gimme a break. I've been in guilds in MMO, farming MT Hyjal for months to get my Tier piece and farming Illidan and then later farming Sunwell when only 1% off of players could even do it.
I don't have that kind of time anymore and it's why I don't play a gear based raiding game. GW2 has something for everyone. I've little doubt there will be those that will be competitive, but for those like me, who just want to have fun with a few people, these 5 man dungeons and easy leveling will be great. -

I don't see this as a big exploit. Using karma rep to buy things, salvaging, crafting and reselling. I do not know what their fix was, but I would hope it was to make karma purchased items not salvageable. I do believe you could not disenchant rep purchased items in WOW, only drops. -
To me the punishment is kinda heavy handed, especially so early after the game's launch, but an obvious exploit is an obvious exploit.

Me and my friends got this to play together. Curious though, we still haven't chose a server yet because we want to make sure to be on the same one, but almost all of the American servers are full save for one. Will they add more or will we have to join a European one? If it's the latter, is it really a problem? With ping and such?

Ping on European servers will be higher, but i personally didn't have problems playing on a Eu server in the last beta weekend, it seems to be on a case by case basis really. I think server changes are still free, but i'm at university so i can't confirm it, if they are you could always try it and change to US if needed.
