Hi all
I have a sony vaio ea 16fg
i5 520m @ 2.4ghz
ati 5650 1gb which is downclocked by sony to 450 mhz
so far i have tried two tools
ati gpu clock tool and MSI afterburner but no success
in afterburner when i change the core clock and memory clock it won't save that profile thus it can't be loaded everytime it changes to default value
and in ati gpu tool there is no effect after changing maybe this is the old version
Here are the default settings detected by these two tools
so any of you can provide a link for a perfect tool to overclock this 5650 to 650 and please provide suggestions how to do it

I feel so sorry for you sad sacks who get the shaft from Sony. My Gateway runs the 5650 at stock clocks no problems.
-
The link given worked great for me. How high can you go before you get into trouble, or is heat the only real worry? Also, does this gain a lot performance?
-
The last link was good for me too.
But the engine value is 99.99 and memory is 149.97 and it goes up only when gpu is used more.
Is that normal?
Should not be showing the maximum values of the card?
Second question... if i set the clock at higher values, gpu will stay at these values that i have set or lower when not so much power is needed? -
but how does it work , by default it's showing 149 both engine and memory how do we apply new changed settings say to 650mhz?
n what will be the optimum setting(for best performance) for this card
Engine=?
Memory clock=? -
how does it work
how did u apply the new settings to overclock?
like right now it's showing both engine and memory clock to 299 , so how we load the new setings coz after changing the values it's again showing the default previous values
n for u n what is the optimum setting(for best performance) for this card like in demanding games or applications
Engine=?
Memory clock=? -
n what will be the best sett wrt temperature
-
-
As above, it shows 150/150 because that's what ATI's Powerplay downclocks the GPU to when it's not in use. Just put the numbers you want in the two boxes, then click "Set Clocks". When you're done gaming, make sure you click the "Restore Default Clocks" button or Powerplay won't work and you'll be running full power all the time.
-
i have tried it with 550-900 n temperature was 60-65 (GPU) -
Try 650-900... your temps are not bad... im getting around 72-80 with these clocks(depends on the room temperature).
-
Undervolting to 0.9v does any good or we mess only with clocks?
-
so is the final limit(580-900) of this card in my system but the card is capable upto 650mhz or is there some way i can bypass this
seems to me a bios problem
what u think -
tried with 650-900 but the screen fades , the game stops checked it down till 580-900 after that games stop due to driver not working
so is the final limit(580-900) of this card in my system but the card is capable upto 650mhz or is there some way i can bypass this ??
seems to me a bios problem -
700/900 on my 5650, dell studio 17.
Works really well, only max 60c -
How far you can push it depends how lucky you get with your chip. The 5650 is basically a 5730 with lowered clocks and TDP (or vice versa). The best chips will become 5730's, and the rest 5650's.. it depends how good yours is.
I didn't get very lucky with mine in terms of core speed - it gets unstable above 640, but memory I've pushed to 950 with no problems. I don't run it that high, though - you have to remember that the temp sensor only monitors core temp, not memory. You can usually tell when the memory is getting too stressed by artifacts, but that's not very precise. -
don't u think this problem is due to oem manufacturer's in this case sony , which made some restriction according to their cooling system with the chip
but somehow i feel there still be a solution to this -
Nothing to do with Sony, the cooling system is fine. It's the same with any chip, CPU or GPU, especially in cases like this where it's the same chip badged as different GPUs - some overclock better than others, none is the same.
-
^^ k agreed seen them
-
Nice low temps..using cooler?
-
more like a fan blowing lol. It idles at 58-60C and load 76-80C.
-
Im planning on buying ea16fg. But zeonzing here couldnt overclock it to more than 580mhz. does that mean sony's 5650 is different from other 5650s?
If it is the same he should be able to overclock to 650 mhz and it should not give any problems.
And should we worry only about heat when overclocking ? -
Sony is underclocked for a reason- it is undervolted. You need more voltage to achieve stable OC so Sony is not the best choice.
-
are you sure it is undervolted ? can it be overvolted ?

but there is an option for changing voltage in amd gpu clock tool
-
NJ90 , don't worry about all this really
even at 450 - 800 core clock which is default in this model i have played bfbc2 , jc 2, crysis , arkahum asalyum dirt 2 all at mid to high settings depending on the game ( yeah.. none at low ) at 1366 768 resolution .
this is without over clocking n after i overclocked it to 580 - 900 , there is a slight improvement which u will not notice unless u r playing crysis or any demanding game coz difference btw 20 - 30 fps is noticeable but 50 - 60 is not.
sony deliberately underclocks it to 450 for efficient cooling system ( which BTW it is) n they still leave a room for that +100 overclocking factor ~ 550-580 for advanced gamers , after that there is a bios routine to that u have to follow to overclock your card till 650 or more ( i knw the procedure to moderate BIOS settings but didn't feel the need to do it) coz trust me if u r a casual gamer then no need to overclock the card u r good to play otherwise u have that +100-150 window which u can easily overclock which is good enough for latest games at acceptable settings with quality (just finished bfbc2 , played at advance setting thoughout after overclocking , no noticeable lags)
overall , it's a gr8 gaming machine for it's price plus u have sony's quality
don't think twice
-
thank you zeonzing. Guess i'll buy it

OC is just an experiment for me to see my GC's limit rather than implement to daily tasks/gaming. Sony has it's way to make it's product to enjoy the gaming fun while retain the heat. Same as other OEMs which do the switchable graphics trick like my Lenovo Y460 just to keep the system in good shape
.

zeon zing can you tell me how to volt mod 5650 ?
-
Here : AMD GPU Clock Tool v0.9.26.0 For HD 5870 download from Guru3D.com
use this tool to do all modifications it's pretty easy , there are other tools also but this one is the best for this model
keep on check with temps while moderating sett , try to keep it below max 70 - 85 , benchmark some demanding app or game while testing acc to ur own prefernces -
does voltage modification also?
-
yes
after putting the new values just click set voltage -
halo..for ea16 users out there..isnt it sony ea' audio is below average quality?saw at many forums that ea16' sound quality is bad and the battery has some kind of high frequency whizzling sound which is very annoying..

On My Windows XP, this setting is safe for gaming, max temp while playing NFS Shift is 62'C. Please note, I am using the driver from Sony & Windows XP.
Because of "undervolted", I am stuck at 626MHz.
Check this out :
yadieet's 14732 marks 3Dmark 2005 run with Mobility Radeon HD 5650 @ 626/900MHz -
I also have Sony Vaio but my limit seems to be around 660MHz for the core and 950MHz for the memory so 660/950. I'm happy that I can at least get to the clock speeds of the 5730 even though it's undervolted. Makes me wonder how far it would go if it were normally volted.

Ok... i have a few questions cause this is my first OC
.
I launched AMD GPU Clock Tool and set the values for 650 and 790, when i ran Dirt2 the game crashed after a few seconds. Set the values for 600 and 790 and i got 45 fps (on 450 and 790 i got 40 fps). I checked the temperatures usging GPU-Z and GPU-Shark, the teperature in 450mhz while playing was 59.5 and with 600mhz was 60. If i leave the speed to 600Mhz does that reduce my graphic cards life? I saw that i have 3 Performance states when i leave the frequency unchanged 450Mhz (posted a picture below of GPUShark) but if i change the speed i get only one performance state. Any ideea on how to manage the performance states?
Thank you!

That's it at 1280x720 -
paulie what is the room temp?
-
Ran Furmark and OCCT GPU stress test on my Gateway NV5925u with the 5650 overclocked to 650/900. No problems at all. Going to try pushing it a little further and see what happens.
-
@NJ90
The room temp is 20-22 Celcius -
I have the same 5650 and overclocked it with amd gpu tool . The limit i've reached is 659 and 1009 . Beyond this it crashes on 3dmark vantage. The difference is with +1k points more , and or up to 3 fps more . On original settings i am getting up to 2880 GPU score and on overclocked 3742 GPU score. I'll add the pictures if i knew how .
edit: Tempreture room is usually 33-39 C during day and 25 night ( summer ) . I am using NC-2000 for cooling pad whole time . At idle state it is down to 49 C original clocks( lowest after 24 hours working , probably at night ) and highest while playing bad company 2 at max details and resolution up to 79 C ( during day ) overclocked. -
MagusDraco Biiiiiiirrrrdmaaaaaaan
I'm still kinda annoyed my envy14 can't use amd gpu tool.
stuck with msi afterburner and a limit of 585 core. (stock is 450/800. dammit hp you gave the dv6tse a 550/800. why not the envy?) -
Someone tell me how to voltmod 5650 in sony?
-
So I'm going to guess that the 5650 is running at default clocks on my notebook. If I o/c it it something like, say 600 - 900, on my system, how much of an improvement do you think I'd see in SC2? Any chance I'd see a increase of 10+ fps?
