From the (understandably) preliminary 780m and 4600m results, it looks like it will be probably more worth it to wait until 2014 to upgrade- at least it will be for me. I will take a more energetic approach (especially financially) to upgrading the the new Nvidia 880m and Intel 5000 series IGPU offerings then, and pass on what is coming out in 3 months in July. -
Same here. Although I am waiting for compatibility confirmations (unless ive missed this to which I apologize). in terms of which chassis it'll fit. P170EM owner here.
-
for me running m17xr4 with 680m now.........i am waiting for m18x r3 f there is any...otherwise will get a m18xr2 next yr with 3940xm+880m sli if compatible..............but really hoping alienware continues m18x so then in late 2014 will get m18 r4 with broadwell+880 m sli cant wait
-
Hmm yeah, the 3940XM will be "obsolete" by then
-
Thanks pau1ow.
So it looks like a stock GTX 780M = max overclocked GTX 680M while the 780M run over 10-14 Celsius cooler? Me likey

Haha - probably true, but let's just take a moment here and reflect that superseded and obsolete are not necessarily the same thing. My 2960xm is no longer offered but it can still whip up a whole can of whoop-a$$ when compared to a 3940xm. One's idea that older technology automatically means worse, that couldn't be further from the truth. The "manufacturers" will obviously want you to buy the latest and greatest to support their profit margins - it does not automatically dictate that older technology is any the less potent than it's successor. The proof of that is indeed Sandybridge XM vs Ivybridge XM. -
-
He said he activated the cooler boost (though it's not clear to me if it means only for the 780M tests).
-
The 680 SLI had been underclocked to 780M clocks I believe - your 7970M's are great overclockers, no doubt!
I just noticed that the 670MX heatsink wasn't spot on with the 780M - I have re-installed my original 675MX and the idle temps are like 5degrees lesser - I believe some thermal pads were a bit too thick on the top side of the heatsink.
Anyway, I don't think HTWingnut got the turbo fan ON during his testing with the 680M in the P150EM - and I don't know which firmware/EC he used (some will ramp the fan early, some too late) - so temps wise, I can say it runs cool but I'd need the 680M installed in the GT60 for a fairer comparison. -
-
I see. Very difficult to compare temperatures anyway since the 680M is in a Clevo and the 780M is in a MSI. But even so the temperatures does look pretty damn good
Thanks. Even cooler? 60s C for the GPU is really awesome. Especially in a 15inch notebook. -
even after 1 or 1.5 if 3940xm gets obsolete....hopefully can get it at usd 200 in ebay.....then i add it to m18x r2 barebone and oc it to 5 ghz if possible + hope that 880 m works in it...that will be a kick rig.....unless m18x r3 shows up and have a better chasis than r2....@pau1ow ....please bench metro last light...crysis 3 ....far cry3 and tomb raider please max out
these 4 games are the games that matter now ...even 2012 games dont even matter 680m is enuf for it...
-
I don't have any of those games unfortunately
-
So you think you can get 940XM now for $200?
You best chance to get 3940XM OEM for cheap (prepare ~$600) is if you frequent the Alienware M18X forum and be on the lookout for my circus of value coming in summer
-
i meant next year in around september bro 3940QS around 200 to 300 usd

Just a bit of testing for you guys.

reborn2003 great results, but you def need a better CPU for the beast)

All your results concur with mines
Great! I hope the throttle will be sorted one day!

Yup going from the 2920XM CPU that was able to be OC really easy to the lower CPU in the R3 I really felt the difference especially in the Lost Planet Test A bench.
Yup its good to see our GPU scores are more or less the same. We just need the boost 2.0 to be wiped out and then we can roam free!
Pau1ow lets try and beat the 10k mark in the RE6 bench lol Single GPU style HAHA
Cheers.

Is it possible to upgrade fro 680m to 780m on my Alienware m17x r4?
-
Yes.

Wow. Here's my last run 680m... keeping up.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3740QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 score: P8259 3DMarks
but wing how did u get such a high cpu score with the 3740qm? -
Intel XTU.
-
Made an account just for this and sorry if i should have started a new forum or something but i figured since it was about the 780m i should post it here probably a noob question but should i get another radeon hd 7970m and run crossfire or wait for the 780m and what is the expected price for the 780m ( ty in advance i will not be able to respond because i only have dial up where i live im using someone else internet).I mean for the price and how long it will last playing games on high settings.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3940XM,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F3 score: P8967 3DMarks
Is what it has to beat if it wants the 16F3 3dmark 11 P crown. -
What kind of settings did u change in the app? if you could screenshot the cpu tuning on the app for ur benchmark settings i would be very grateful
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
In XTU with the 3740qm (on a system that supports it) it's simply a case of moving the CPU ratio sliders up.
The only clevo systems to support it in the current gen are the 150em (with a bios mod) and the P170EM. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
So Alienware and clevo are sticking with FC04 then.
-
umm, GEEEEGEEEEE!!!
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's just running at 1180/2650 at 1.1v core
-
I think overvolt is kind of cheating for a realistic expectation for gaming. Although it is good to see how far you can push it like Meaker did with the 680m. But in reality when you need 50% more power and ridiculous cooling, it's just for reaching the ultimate benchmark result.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well my permanent clocks are 1033/2600 which is still a 43% overclock.
-
Nice! I can't get vRAM much higher than 2400MHz, so you're lucky on the vRAM front unless you're able to OV the vRAM? I can run consistently 1000/2400 at stock voltage using svl7 BIOS to bump stock GPU to 900MHz and vRAM to 2200MHz.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The overvolt on the ram only buys me an extra 50-75mhz or so. (2525 -> 2600)
1033mhz only requires 1.0125v. -
My problem is temperatures. At 1000/2400 it peaks about 85-86C when taxed hard (ie BF3), that's without turning on max fans. With max fans drops about 10C. But I usually run the stock 900/2200 because it seems to be the best compromise between heat and performance. I just have to be careful with XTU. If I use XTU with Throttlestop, I can shut the system down.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That's where my 240W dell modified AC comes in along with my MSI cooling. Lets me run 4.2ghz CPU with the slight over-volt on the GPU with no issue.
Also lets me do 1.18ghz on the GPU with the 4.2ghz CPU but as you can imagine temps get a LITTLE bit crazy at that point
-
In the case of the new MSI, such overclocks and overvolts would then be draining the battery while maxing the PSU, instead of a shutdown of the system.
-
Not sure I follow? I doubt they would resort to the battery in the case of an overpower situation.
-
@meaker help me achieve 1050/2500 on my gtx 680m in m1x r4
-
Apparently it's a new feature they will use. When overclocking heavily, it seems the PSU will work with the battery to give the additional power it requires. I would have opted for a higher wattage PSU but it's an interesting idea. Though it remains to be seen how well it works, how much strain the battery will suffer etc.

Alienware M17x M18x VGA Upgrade Kit New NVIDIA GTX 780M 4GB DDR5 MXM 3 0B | eBay
These look very much OEM to me? -
The GPU they have pictured is N13E-GTX, which is a GTX 680M.
The specifications and instructions is for a GTX 680M.
Price is $100 extra over the GTX 680M. -
the system will think you have 680m?
Does anybody tested 780m on a m17 r2?
since 680m´s are working on a m17r2,the 780m should do his job too right?
I`m upgrading, are you? (GTX 780M review inside)
