Do you have any info when you will get the test unit of G703?

Haven't heard anything, we're still working with the distributors on most of that.Mobius 1 likes this. -
Even when have info on that, most probably under NDA so rarely does resellers say anything
-
The Chimera page from the ROG site has been taken down. Hopefully some new info is added !

Fingers crossed that it's just changing over to 8th gen.hmscott likes this. -
8820HK laptop CPU has not been announced yet, according to a leak it exists (6 cores+12 threads) but no official confirmation from Intel yet and I doubt Asus will reveal it.
I think 8820HK laptops will not appear before January.
I think Chimera will be released with 7820HK in mid October and get a refresh to Coffe Lake in 2018 Q1.
If Asus was planning it with Coffe Lake then why advertise it everywhere with 7820HK and not just say "Unlocked Intel 8th Gen CPU" (to avoid voiding NDA) ?hmscott likes this. -
The "8th Generation" name is likely trademarked and under NDA as well, it's Intel after all they are going to have an Army of Lawyers making sure everything is covered.
Asus does this a lot actually, getting in early 1st's and then riding it out until a new CPU / GPU comes along, and BAM! - another model in the new line that gets the marketing and production the initial models didn't.
Asus does this to work out the kinks in new technology, and it works for them. The early models are still very nice, very cool, and completely awesome to buy, but Asus is always coming out with a new model as new stuff comes along, so we expect it.
It's a very good sign that the Chimera is taken down just before the 8th Generation CPU's come out, it's a positive sign.

G701VI was not that great, it had a pathetic cooling design, both cpu and gpu had 2-2 shared heatpipes and thus both components were ovearheating and throttling when playing modern games.
The G701VIK not jsut had a CPU refresh but Asus made a brand new cooling design with separate cpu/gpu heat distribution and it did an acceptable job.
G703 is a further improvement of that cooling system.
Few days ago Chimera was pulled from the site and that was when they added the new infromation mentioned above.hmscott likes this. -
I was thinking more of the GX700, GX800 series, but the G701VI went through it too, some initial designs are good to go like the water-cooled series, and some aren't.
Hopefully the Chimera runs great with the added power and thermal load brought by the additional 2c / 4t of the Coffee Lake #1 CPU.
Now, the only problem is, the laptop BGA version of the Coffee Lake isn't supposed to be out until Feb 2018... this first release now is LGA only, isn't it?? -

The GX ones caused some ruffled feathers, because everyone thought it was a full commercial release and pre-ordered the heck out of them IIRC.hmscott likes this. -
Really? That's all at once great to hear, and too bad at the same time.
Asus didn't build many as it was their first water-cooled models, and they rarely push new tech like that without field testing it in small numbers first.
I would have thought people in the know would know that... I guess I was excited about it too, I hope Asus keeps up that water-cooled line and pushes the water cooling tech further down in their lineup.
People are always asking for laptop "docks" - they miss'em, I do too, and putting out a water-cooled dock is a good reason to bring them back along with the docking features everyone misses.
I haven't heard much about the GX line recently, have you? -
Support.2@XOTIC PC Company Representative
I really haven't. For as popular as they seemed I thought they'd stick around or be more prominent. The dock was a really cool idea, even if it made the case/transport a little awkward.hmscott likes this. -
Looks like someone at Asus f*cked up. The mentioned details have been pulled from the US site and it only states again "Coming soon".hmscott likes this.
-
If they are pulling it back, maybe ASUS has realized that launching it with Coffee Lake makes more sense that doing both a Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake release within months of each other.
If you launch with Kaby and then everyone else announces their top end laptops with Coffee, you look stupid.
I feel like MSI should've sat on the GT75 as well. -

MSI tends to just release a new version of the same machine right away though, and that's pretty much what I expect to see with CL.hmscott likes this. -
The Chimera would be the laptop to put in Coffee Lake with potentially 50% more CPU thermal load from the 50% more cores / threads.
-
Any info on CL? Will it work cooler? If there will be 50% more thermal load, I would have gone with the KL version just to have a better thermal results with less noise.

The Clevo models should arrive soon with new owners with 8700k, but with new thermal solutions too, so hard to compare.
You can always tune the fans and power / OC to meet your current noise requirements, and have horsepower to spare for when you need it more than you need quiet operations

I doubt that will have gone without being compensated for, probably you'll see more extensive heatsinks and ventilation. -
That's my hope with newer laptops coming out with coffee lake cpus. Since they will undoubtedly run hotter my hope is it will force the laptop manufacturers to beef up the cooling on their laptops. Here's to hoping

Just be prepared for the ones that still try and compromise on it to keep systems thinner. -
The manufacturers that haven't cared about overheating laptops, through countless generations of machines, aren't going to start now.
Not gonna name any names.....hmscott likes this. -

There's a few up for pre-order now so I'd imagine fairly soon. Maybe early-mid November?ThePerfectStorm likes this. -

You think the Coffee Lake HQ and HK may arrive by mid-November? That would be great.

Laptops with CL. Those all have the desktop chips. For the HQ/HK I'm less optimistic, maybe January. -
It seems CL version wont come. There is no any news about that. Would be nice to have both CL and KL versions which KL would come earlier obviously.

It's highly possible we won't see any news about Coffee Lake laptop CPU's until 1H18, likely in Feb/March.
Coffeelake BGA "H" CPU laptops are still 6 months away...PredatoR_TR likes this. -
5-6 months is a nice period to sell this laptop with KL. It is nonsense to cancel this laptop like Asus did before with G800vi. I was very enthusiastic with a 18.4' laptop without a cooling unit back then.hmscott likes this.

@Tanner@XoticPC - how come the laptop is not listed anymore on your site? Was it just an early slip indicating that it will be put up again when Asus officially launches it?

I think they put up two versions, one of which was delayed, so it was taken down. The XH74K is still up.hmscott likes this. -

Well, got myself a Chimera, look at this beautiful screen
-
That's because it's updating 144 times a second, that makes it 144/60 times brighter than you are used to...
Try turning down the brightness a tad. I've run into IPS displays that are way too bright at 100% to use indoors at that setting, more like 65%-70% is enough in a lit room, in a dark room, more like 35%-40%.
Play around with the brightness / contrast in Nvidia control panel too...
Congrats on the new laptop!!
-
I think this is just a common IPS backlight bleed issue
hmscott likes this. -
Those remediation's worked for me though, so give'em a try, before giving up on the display - and the laptop. All IPS displays have them, you learn to live with it, and to work around'em.
That isn't *that* bad...Last edited: Nov 25, 2017 -
Well I am surprised. Thought it could be better this time.
You used G701vik as well, what is better would you say? Speakers? Noise level? Heat? Keyboard backlight?Last edited: Nov 25, 2017hmscott likes this. -

Ouch, that's really bad bleed if that's not 100%... can you please shoot a shot at 100% for comparison?
