I tested the newest XP drivers on XP and the newest win 7 drivers on a performance edition of win 7.
On win 7 i get better FPS in 3dmark 06 and in CSS which are the only two games/benchmarks i have done so far.
Edit: About 30% improvement on CSS

GPA is a software that shows detailed statistics about every which part on the Intel IGP which is useful for game developers to optimize their games. Like for example there are some visual effects which cost a lot of compute power but doesn't offer a lot on the actual visual side. GPA can show that so the developer can disable it when running on lower end systems for better performance.
Since you can't really modify the game engine(unless you are a developer) GPA won't help you. -
There is some problem with the drivers available for Intel 965 X3100 chipset. In both default drivers with Windows 7 as well as the driver available on Intel site, the problem arises. I'm using Windows RC and RTM. I'm not able to get fullscreen while playing games, the aspect ratio is stuck. I get two black borders on both side. As my laptop screen is 15.4 inch wide, the game or any fullscreen application like a powerpoint presentation, the black borders arise.
As we cant change the aspect ratio option in default drivers, so I installed the new drivers from the site. In the options the option in selected as fullscreen(no margin) but it doesn't work. I tried to change the option to any other selection like Center, but the option does not change, its stuck at the middle option for Fullscreen(No border) but nothing happens.
I'm unable to get fullscreen! Please help out how to solve this issue. Thanks. -
You say that for you it doesn't help what dajamaican posted here in section "For those who ...":

Installing Vista drivers in Win7 is supposed to solve the problem as well. At least until intel gets their Win7 drivers fixed. -
Thank you
I will try

Solved with last Vista drivers

@7oby
Thanks for posting
Are there changelogs available for these drivers?
-
I didn't see changelogs publically available. You can find changelogs for v15.15.4.1872 here. Since it has been released only a couple of days before don't expect any major differences to the changelog before.
1883 and 1872 are just the build versions which climb in chronological order. the change .4 -> .5 is just a bugfix revision and maybe a slight performance increase in particular applications. But no new features nor major refactorings with performance improvements in mind (such as SW/HW T&L). -
@7oby
Thanks again for the explanation

Anand has another article of Clarkdale up. Intel claims a 50% performance boost in 3DMark Vantage (graphics only) compared to G45 platforms (or is it only compared to GM45?).
The Turbomode expands on notebook platforms to the GPU. But this is only for throttling the GPU, whilst on desktop systems the integrated GPU will always run at full speed. This might result in the paradox situation that you actually have to throttle your CPU performance for gaming to get a higher overall performance and prevent GPU Turbo Mode throttle. Since we know that games on these platforms will be GPU limited/bound. -
do these drivers actually improve performance?
-
Interesting take on it. I would agree. In many cases even disabling a core in order to get the GPU to run at full speed would result in an overall performance increase for games. I can't wait for Intel to start developing a decent Integrated GPU so that we can at least plays games on the lowest settings. Right now, it appears to be hit or miss (mostly miss) for most newer titles, even on the lowest of settings with GMA 3100 & 4500.
-
It's quite clear on the AT article that its using a E8400 and a Q9400 CPU, aka desktop CPUs. Unless somehow you can fit those in a GM45 motherboard, I'd say its G45. Hexus had another article(they pulled it later) which put Clarkdale on par with 785G using Athlon II X4.
Unless you want to adjust CPU clocks differently on every game, I'd probably say it would end up with a loss most of the time throttling the CPU(especially considering how performance on 3D with Intel is closely tied between the CPU and the GPU). -

Using the DOS TSR test patched X3100 vbios
Here is just the vbios_gm965.zip (version 1668) as contained in v15.12.4 32-bit Vista drivers. Enclosed in vbios_gm965.zip is crl_1668.exe, a DOS binary that has embedded in it the bios from the crl_1668.dat file.
What I did was use hwdirect to save my current X3100 bios (C000-CFFF, 64kb), then I cut and paste it into the crl_1668.exe file. There's a bit of padding on the end of both files. I booted dos and tested my custom crl_1668.exe (I called it 2510pvbios.exe) and found it works fine.
Could be useful to anyone who might want to consider altering the vbios file, testing it, then merging it into the system bios file prior to flashing it. Would be great to know what part of the code relates to Core Render Clock speed.
Useless to other Windows users since it's a DOS TSR that loads the vbios. -
Loading the TSR probably won't allow to test the code path that's executed during initialization of the GPU.

Have you got any mirror for 32bit X3100 drivers?
-
Download links for Win7 32-Bit now working.
-
I haven't seen anything about mac's using xppro bootcamped.
I have read everything but do not see an update that is more updated then intel's site.
I still can't run the game (cod4) intel's support page even says it will run it even thought its not a dedicated card like the min spec's require.
I have uninstalled reinstalled video, audio, and the game... i have no virtual drives running and have tweaked the game to the lowest i know how including console commands...
mac x2.4 duo core intel
4gig 667 ddr2
current intel drivers
and hd realtek audio...
i cant upgrade the card so the onboard intel x3100 is what i am suck with.
Any real sugestions other than buy a gaming pc I KNOW THIS PC CAN RUN IT I JUST CANT MAKE IT WORK... -

Hi, i have an question. Anybody tried FlatOut 2 in Windows7 (with X3100)? I don't know what is it, but in Win7 its a bit laggy. In XP and Vista it runs perfectly, not above 25fps.

this is a joke huh?
I mean, I own one acer laptop with this hardware:
cpu intel pentium dual-core t2310(1.46Ghz, 533Mhz FSB, 1MB l2 cache)
and I can not run need for speed underground one on everything, including geometry, set to MEDIUM.
also, I must say that this is about one LAPTOP.
again, acer does not allow me to configure anything related to the memory, so I run out of ideas of what I can do about this...even gta:san andreas is unplayable.
running win7 pro x64 with 2GB mem. @266Mhz(4-4-4-12) -
What does that mean? Can't you change the RAM yourself?
Is that a single 2GB stick or two 1GB sticks? Try installing Vista drivers and check if they perform better. -
these win7 drivers are no good for gaming. the infamous warcraft iii flicker is back, even when running in software mode.
however, they are really good for everything else. aero runs very smoothly with them. -
Hi,
I've read this thread (and a few other ones) with great interest, because I'm amongst the guys having problems with the x3100 graphics card on Windows 7. For example portrait mode gives me weird mouse cursors in some applications and Graphics acceleration in Photoshop CS 4 doesn't work, which has always been a problem with the x3100 graphics card.
Thanks to this forum I have been able to get Vista Drivers for the intel 4 series cards working on Windows 7, which gives me Photoshop CS4 OpenGl acceleration and frees me from the mouse cursor bug in portrait mode. Nevertheless things aren't working that well. Sometimes the wakeup from standby or even just powered off display takes a long time or doesn't even work at all.
So here is my request: Has anybody had success in modifying intel drivers for the x3100, that are fully working? So far I didn't succeed in modifying the windows 7 drivers for the 4 series, just the vista drivers do work for me. As far as I have read an attempt in this thread failed, too. Any success or hints on how to do the modification of the windows 7 drivers?
Thanks in advance. -
With or without the two photoshop registry changes (AllowOldGPUS_ON.reg, DisallowOpenGLWindows_OFF.reg) ?
Does it crash if you actually use any of the opengl functions (like image rotation)?
Oh, and specifically which vista drivers? -
I tested a lot of different settings. Results are the following:
Newest Vista driver for x3100 (driver version: 15.12.4.1666):
without registry changes: no opengl acceleration available
with registry changes: opengl acceleration can be activated and for example image rotation works, but crashes on a lot of actions for example doing a simple rectangular selection, so not usable
Newest Vista drivers for the 4 series modified to work with x3100 (driver version: 15.13.6.1908) :
without registry changes: photoshop opengl acceleration seems to work fine
with registry changes: not tested, no need to do so
windows 7 drivers (tested pretty much all of them):
same as vista drivers for the x3100, so not usable
As far as I can tell using the modified 4 series drivers is the only solution working for people using the x3100. Had some discussion over at the adobe forums in the x3100 problems thread (link: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/373256?start=100&tstart=0)
As mentioned before. Modified drivers no crashes, unmodified vista and windows 7 drivers do crash on a lot of operations.
As mentioned above:
4 series modified to work with x3100: driver version is 15.13.6.1908
unmodified vista drivers for x3100: driver version is 15.12.4.1666
I also tested modified drivers of older 4 series drivers with same results as the new ones.
One additional thing: I found out, that dual monitoring with the modified drivers works, but the driver crashes pretty frequently (for me in ps4 and in firefox while surfing). These crashes can be reproduced, but I don't know when they occur exactly, I just have to wait a few minutes while surfing, etc. -
I had the same problem with VMD (visual molecular dynamics) and even counter strike. What worked for me was to get 64-bit vista driver from january 2009. I'm on Win 7 x64.
-
Thanks The3DWizard, so basically it's just further confirmation that there is absolutely no reason why they can't produce drivers for the x3100 that would fully enable openGL 2.0 including the support needed by cs4.
-
i am a x4500 owner. i found this thread after trying to find out why my laptop can't even run counterstrike 1.6 at above 15fps. win7 and newest drivers

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I run CS 1.6 maxed on my X3100. I get great fps, no problems.
I have a T7300 and 4gb ram. Maybe you should upgrade to 4gb ram.
Get the latest driver from the intel site. -
Do you use opengl or d3d or software?
-
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
opengl.
I can tell you CS1.6 was smooth, even with lots of people on screen.
Except for a few custom maps, which were unplayable.
BTW, I use xp. -
Well yea, sure, with XP there's no problem with X3100 and opengl. The problem is with Windows 7. Like I said, I'm using Vista driver and it works fine so far.
-
Hello everyone...
I also have this opengl issue in Windows 7, with the X4500.
Neither Photoshop CS4 or Solidworks can work with OpenGL enabled. It works on Software mode, and it's really slow.
Does anyone have knowledge of a driver that enables opengl on windows 7 for the X4500. Thx -
For the x4500 on windows 7 the vista driver should do the job.
-
New W7 version (didn´t investigate if other OS received the update too) dated 10/2/2009.
I´m not on my x3100 laptop so I can´t test... -
is there anyone here who plays nba live 07? the game crashes on windows 7 everytime a game ends in dynasty mode. counter-strike: source is also slower on windows 7 compared with windows xp in my experience.
-
As in the above, try latest driver, then try the Vista driver.

hi
call of juarez : bound in blood not run only black screen
my system
cpu : e8400
ram :4g buffalo
graphic : gma x4500
os : win xp sp3
intel driver : 14.38.11

I think so X3100 and X4500 is not supported in Call of Juarez: Bound In Blood, you can't play it.
-
X3100, X4500 are useless for games as their drivers...
Basic 3D + good video aceleration is what they offer.
Shame drivers don´t work with Photoshop... -
Call of Juarez SHOULD be able to run. I think the problem might happen to be you are using Windows XP. There are compatibility differences and internally they are probably shifting focus away from driver development on that OS and onto newer OSes like Vista(more with 7!).

Anyone after an improvement in Win7 Desktop Rendering speed might be interested in the modded GMA driver GMA_Mod_V1.1_Final.7z from 9xx Development. My WEI desktop score went up from 3.0 to 3.3, with noticeable response improvement. Same link has details on the mods + a 64-bit driver. I had previously tried the X4500 driver with modified .inf and it gave a blotched screen. No such problem with this one.
