Half Life, the first one! I remember many years ago reading a PC Gamer in England, seeing this early preview of a FPS called Half Life. Finished reading it, was blown away by the concept, turned to my bro and said "Kev, this will be the next big thing in FPS gaming." He didn't take much notice, fast forward a year or two, HL is released to massive fan fare, and it did revolutionize FPS.

HL2 was great, still love the engine. Im a huge believer in Physics engines in a game. I don't care how good the graphics are, if it doesn't have some form of physics in it (rag doll etc...) I won't be impressed. This is one of the things that annoyed me about COD4.

Crysis blew me away! Crank the graphics and just get lost in watching the trees move, and the water reflect. Jeez, that game really is beautiful. Losing in a jungle fight? Knock over some tree's for added cover. I love how you actually watch for foliage moving now, instead of just the enemy dude running about.

Crysis and Far Cry will only appeal to people who like the open ended style of play. These games will give you an objective, and then leave you to go about getting that objective done in any way you choose. Go in guns blazing? Snipe from afar? Sneak in? Drive a jeep over the wall in spectacular fashion? Its brilliant!

I had friends who came over to play Far Cry. They firstly did say the graphics were good, but hated the open ended gameplay. Each to their own I guess!

lol. it's an alright list but somehow i feel as though farcry may have snuck itself in the list if it didn't have as much hype as it did. i guess those that cannot live up to its hype will not go unpunished. it's hard to imagine farcry not being on par with some of those lackluster run of the mill shoot em up on that list

    Bioshock is Excellent

Is the HL2 your refering to the new one based on the "lost coast" teaser. I've lost touch, is that the orange box? I enjoyed HL2 'darkness' - found it a bit childish at times but I'd be up for the latest installment

It seems like a lot of people don't like Crysis because they can't run it at high settings, or they're hopping on the anti-Crysis bandwagon. Others have valid reasons though.

I really enjoyed Crysis, as a matter of fact I just beat it again on a higher difficulty level. Unbelievable graphics, and the gameplay is very dynamic. It would be cooler if the AI was a bit smarter (it's almost like they made it dumb on purpose) but that's my only complaint. The storyline is nothing original but it's decent.

At any rate, I am very much looking forward to FC2, I hope it lives up to its name. I like how the weather and everything changes.

If memory serves me right, there's another game that have independent weather and environment system like FC2, Alan Wake (?), it is not a first person shooter though, but a 3rd person thriller. By looking at the trailers, it makes me really want to get the game now! I love triller games.. I just hope it doesn't disappoint .

It will be for both PC and X360, there's isn't a release date yet, for anyone interested or never heard of it before. Here's a trailer:

By physics, I don't think as much about ragdoll as I do about destructible environments. I'm surprised that the physics aspect hasn't been integrated into GPU's yet. It stands to reason that every object in the game, in addition to having a polygon structure could also be assigned some basic physics values like density, flexibility/brittleness, structure, phase (liquid, gel, solid, etc) so when acted on by an outside force would automatically react accordingly.

I'm glad we're not going to over-hype the game like everyone did with Crysis. Which is probably a large contributor to the whole "anti-Crysis" bandwagon and huge let downs.

Wait, nevermind. That's exactly what we're doing.

Ugh, this game is getting to be overrated.

People are expecting it to be the Crysis-killer, and it's not going to be. If you don't believe me, go look at the tree regeneration demo that was recently posted. Watch the branches do backflips in response to pistol shots and fly ridiculously far. At least Crysis's trees responded realistically to my gunshots.

I mean, even from a non-Crysis fan standpoint, I can't see this game being better than Crysis. It has some cool looking screenshots and trailers, but if the feel of the tree regeneration is the feel they are trying to capture in this game, I'm not sure it's a game I'd be particularly interested in.

I agree with you on the points, games are becoming more and more about showing off the graphics, and the ability of the Engine. It makes the player feel like he is watch/play a tech demo rather than a game that is designed to be fun and innovative.

umm... crysis IS a tech demo... they made it to show off their engine.

they are licensing out their engine to real game developers to make real games....

    half serious.

    ^^ Awesome video.

I am more and more impressed everytime gameplay vids are released.

Unfortunately I pre-ordered this game for the 360, since I think PC requirements are too hefty to run this game well.

With a good rig, this game easily looks better than Crysis. Better Lighting and atmospheric effects for the win here.

They're different types of games so they really cannot be compared.

Anyways neither game is out yet so you should refrain from making such conclusions.

All indications are that Far Cry 2 will not be another Crysis. From what I have seen and heard FC2 is a lot more polished than Crysis was at release (and now).

we need games that push the graphics envelope

i remember how weird it was to go to other FPSs after playing crysis on full settings...everything looked so....dated and blocky

i salute the developers for pushing the envelope, even though the game itself was quite mediocre it has served its purpose

developers usually aim at the medium level of hardware available among their demographic when developing PC games, and by making people purchase better rigs Crysis has ensured that that level has risen thus allowing developers to make more complex games

go back and try to replay Half Life 1 or Quake 2; its pretty hard to suspend your disbelief with those graphics after witnessing something like Crysis; we have made insane progress in the last 10 years in terms of graphics and games like Crysis and Farcry have made some of the biggest contributions

i must say the graphic of crysis is unbeatable
but its gameplay + storyline are just ...... crxp, IMO

farcry2 needs to beat crysis on gameplay, not graphic

I really dont know why there are so many crysis haters. To be honest its one of the best FPS on the market. The physics are just unbelievable, and there are plenty of memorable moments.
