Nothing to worry about, apparently Dell did it BY MISTAKE. Sounds legit, creating a vBIOS to accidentally disable CUDA cores happens all the time. Sounds like maybe this laptop should have just had a 3060 in it.

The inherent cynicism of old age is probably why it makes complete sense to me. In truth a buyer that makes a Dell purchase is partly to blame: Some due diligence should be done when buying an item of this type and cost in terms of determining needs, reliability, quality, what's on offer; etc. The most cursory look at Dell and their products will be ringing alarm bells. Essentially you either didn't look at all or ignored readily available information that could hardly be missed. It's shameful that a company acts in this way but also shameful to allow yourself to be taken.

I'm sure M. Dell isn't having any trouble sleeping at night, 50 billion dollar bed and all that.

Have a agreed standard of MXM modules among manufacturers. That would get me back in the door. Nothing left to do do after purchasing a BGA disposable.

I find it nearly impossible to get excited about wasting money on laptops at this point. They're just too disgusting. Even the good ones with desktop CPUs and MXM ("one" is more accurate... no "s" applies anymore) that utterly annihilate the disposable BGA turdbooks have too many limitations. The question remains why Dell disabled 10% of the RTX 3070's CUDA cores on the m15 R5, and not the R4 or the R6. We doubt that Dell will ever explain what caused this 'incorrect setting' to apply to the only AMD powered machine of those three, unfortunately.

I initially thought it was bad vBIOS patch that killed few percentage of cores. This is a new power move by Dell good thing, it was found out initially. PCs with purposefully cut down components and inflated prices are no-go nowadays.

 

Doesn't sound like the lawyers think the suit about false advertising for upgradeability has much hope of going anywhere. Lots of fine print ya know.

Still some headroom up to 105C. Just hope that the coming new firmware fix for the lost GPU cores don't make it to run hotter (Unified heatsink without Vapor Chamber). Remember the only fix for the high temps in this Dell AW Ryzen model is to completely disable Turbo Boost. Some said Intel was a worse choice?

So i guess there's still room for improvment on the next bios update! why not go all the way to 150C for normal operating temps?

I am discusted at how dell is handling the temps issue with this new obsession of wanting to go thin at all cost.

I was thinking of the latest Star Trek movies: There was an extra showing Kirk doing the Kirk thing. The director cut and told him it wasn't the high point of the scene but he was already at full Shat (William Shatner) but should only be at half Shat so he had somewhere to go at the scenes crescendo which is where he should be at full Shat. At least last I heard, Dell would be releasing a fix for it sometime mid-June. But yeah, it should never have happened in the first place and hopefully they do not pull this off with their other laptops.

 

The LG story is an example of a purposeful action, rather than of an oversight...

Dell screwed up, and hopefully they would fix in within the month. In the case for LG, not sure how they would fix that screw up of theirs.

 

Dell have released new vBios with all Cuda cores enabled yesterday. But it won't come without flaws. And god know what other tricks they will use if they release new firmware down the road to show the x models in better lights

Sort if like how they screwed up surreptitiously signing people up for BS service subscriptions and warranties they didn't ask for. Or that time they screwed up releasing the XPS with a power delivery system that couldn't handle the reqs under load and the battery drained while on mains. Or that time.....

Nothing come free and without new problems. And the model is the Budget option. All love will be put on the new X series.

If you have read some of my older posts. You can see Dell screwed the Area-51 owners. Same for the XPS line owners with new nasty firmware.

 

Scumminess is one of the many services they are happy to provide at no extra charge. It is just who they are and what they do.

 

And I thought they already screwed over Area51M owners when it comes to the future upgrade paths for the laptops. lol

 

Yeah, those in the know already knew upgrade options for MXM and LGA/PGA laptops were by and large a pipe dream for a while now. I was grimacing at that marketing when I saw it. I mean it's fine to want those machines for the closer to desktop performance, but upgradability is marginal at best depending on what you initially bought or what software and physical mods (See Tornado F5) you're willing to do. Granted that F5 mod was buying you two extra cores, so that was a decent win, but it's not like you could just drop it in and go. You had to get an unofficial BIOS and mod the CPU land pads.

 

I couldn't believe Dell was marketing an upgradeable machine after what happened with MSI, when it promised us the 900M series laptops would be able to upgrade to the next two generations of MXM GPUs.

The 51M owners also didn't raise even a third as much hell as we did. MSI ended up offering us the ability to trade in our laptops for credit when Pascal and Turing came out, which I took advantage of to get new laptops each time at a greatly reduced price.

There is still a Class Action going against MSI, so we'll see where that ends up but I think they are going to drag it out until the lawyers give up.

 

Laptop makers are going to look at that landscape and realize building these machines with "upgradability" is a lost cause and stop doing it altogether with fumble after fumble costing them legal fees. Quite frankly most people are probably going to upgrade for new chipsets, faster RAM support etc. Plus both Intel and AMD are changing sockets again soon it looks like.

 

Or they could simply deliver on the promise of upgradeability. RAM, and desktop CPUs within the same socket require very little effort. Graphics cards should be broadly Upgradable, as is the case with Precision graphics cards.

Non-upgradeability seems like more of a conscious business decision.
