M1710 7950 GTX not up to snuff

I recently received my M1710 as mentioned above. I run 3dMark and it's not that impressive. I run Battlefield 2 on High settings with 4x antialiasing and it lags. I checked the driver and it says I have the most updated version. Any thoughts?

 

What's your 3dMark'06 score? And your core/mem clocks? Is your laptop running in full performance mode? Or is it in power saving/battery saving mode?

 

What are the specification of your M1710?

 

Yes give your scores so a comparison can be made with benchmarked m1710s. Go to your control panel and make sure your PowerMizer settings have it so it fulls at Full Performance when power is plugged in.

 

Must be an easily fixed problem. The 7950GTX is absurdly powerful. Actually, how much memory are you using? If you have Vista you'd be needing at least 2GB memory, 3GB is recommended.

 

Check your video card settings and make sure that PowerMizer is set to maximum performance on AC.

make sure you are playing with the power supply plugged it. the 7950GTX sucks more power then the battery can provide.

 

4840 3dMark06. That seems low to me. I have the laptop plugged in with the power settings to high performance. Any Ideas?

 

That sounds about right, but I've seen low 5000 on 3dMark06 with 7950gtx.

 

I get 5200 with 3dmark06 on my stock 7950 gtx, u should try some new drivers I find the stock dell ones work the best but thats just me.

 

At 4800 3Dmarks, Bttlefield should flow like water.... Try a lower AA, although that's not really necessary. I think it's a problem with the game install or something. What resolution are you playing at?

 

resolution shouldn't matter, I have the 7900GS and I play at 1920x1200 with a frame rate in the 40's

when you say it lags, are you playing online or single player?

how much ram do you have?

 

I know.. The 7950GTX is the most powerful mobile card out there right now. There is little chance of it lagging in any game, no matter what the settings. Perhaps Crysis at max settings might stress it. But certainly not battlefield.

 

How am I getting Lag in my games at high settings? I have to play them at some high and some medium with AA off.
Desertfox9, which driver are you referring to? It says I have the most updated version.

 

With my M1710, 2 GB RAM, 2.16 GHz and the 7950 GTX I got 4995 in 3DMark06. I had the same issue with BF2, this because it's at high settings and full resolution, I don't think the card can handle 1900x1200 resolution at maximum settings so I decreased the resolution to 1280x1024 and put AA at 2x at it works like a dream, with AA on 2x or 4x wont see that much of a difference.

 

Hmm, I am getting real lag problems on high settings in GRAW and Vegas 6 and even at low settings they are so slow. I can't run BF2 on max settings at max resolution, it lags like a mother but the FPS is still high, like 60-70 that's why I am wondering why it lags when it's got that high an fps at 1900x1200. I have to use 1280x1024 and even there I lag for the first 10 minutes of the game at 90 fps.

 

Try laptopvideo2go.com drivers. You really should be cruising through any game...

I agree, we need specifics on which driver to use. I am have the exact problem as you noticed above. I use the 1024x7?? (can't remember) resolution and am having the lag issues at HIGH. So now I'm running no AA and with some of the graphics at medium. I didn't realize that I'd encounter this with the top of the line video card.

 

if your getting high FPS and still have lag at the same time then its not the vid card. not sure what it could be though. maybe its accessing the hard drive a lot. again, how much ram do you have? if its not enough it will have to store information on to the hard drive instead of the ram, causing major slowdown.

 

I've got 2GB ram with 100GB 7200rpm hard drive. I did notice that while running 3dMark06 it lagged pretty good too. At some points the FPS were down to 8. During the CPU test I recieved a 0 on FPS.

 

I also have 2GB of ram.

 

have you tried using something to monitor your GPU and CPU temps? maybe something is overheating and its throttling itself back.

 

Have you updated the video drivers, downloaded directx updates, defragmented hard disk, run anti-virus scan, checked for CPU throttling, gotten rid of unnecessary programs, run disk error checking, downloaded windows update files, checked GPU settings yet?

Do all that then come back.

 

I figured I didn't need to do all that since I just got my machine like a week ago. The only thing I installed is Mozilla Firefox, Battlefield 2 and Half Life. Thats it.
I ran all the Windows updates, driver says its the latest, and I uninstalled all the bloatware that came with the machine.

 

Could it be that BF2 has some compability problem win win vista (someone who had problems said they had vista)?

 

No, that problem that used to exist for some, but I have found the work around for that so it couldn't be my problem.

 

Hmm looks like you got a bit the same problems like i have. I think it's the harddisk that is too slow for playing. Is your harddisk 5400Rpm?

If that's not the isssue, maybe it's the dvd drive? I have some troubles with my dvd drive. In example: when i put a dvd in the dvd drive the drive starts to load that dvd. At those moments the sound of my laptop is streaming very very slow. So maybe that may be an issue? (i dont think this is the problem though)

I have 5400 rpm but that should only affect loading times, although I don't know about the DVD drive.

 

I'm using the dell 84.69 drivers. You should also make sure speedstep is enabled in your bios and making sure your cpu on both core is running at full speed.

 

Well i'm not sure but i think the harddisk do can be the reason for stuttering. In a game like oblivion it's also that harddisk is being accessed a lot in my case. But i'm not sure altough.

 

3DMark06 is extremely demanding and those types of framerates are normal. I am using a dual Go7950GTX SLI rig with a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo E6700 right now and even it lags a bit in 3DMark06. It's nothing to worry about.

At any rate, I do not believe that your problem is related to overheating, since 3DMark ran fine. It it was going to overheat anywhere it would have overheated while running that benchmark.

Check for patches for the games you run. Are you having framerate problems with any other games?

 

I agree with PC Pulsar about the hard drive. I know it might seem a bit silly on a performance system, but I had the exact same problem with Half-Life 2 and World of Warcraft awhile back on my gaming laptop where it would just stutter pathetically where it should be putting out really high FPS. Any game that uses large data files at any point will have excessive issues if any files are fragmented.

So, if you haven't already given it a try... De-fragment your hard drive!!! It worked for me.

 

I thought it might be the fact that i was playing via wifi but its not. I connected a lan cable and it still lagged. No need to defragment hard drive for the laptop is brand new. I am perplexed by this. My desktop computer with a 7600gt is much nicer and faster than the 7950gtx. What gives???

Defrag shouldn't be the issue. The machine is brand new.

I'm rocking out with 2GB RAM are you telling me that is not enough? Because I'd tell you right back that I think it is.

 

To check if speedstep is enabled you have to go into the bios and enable it there. It should not be off by default but you never know.

It sounds like a driver issue.

Try putting on the 97.95 driver and overclocking it using rivatuner. Or try the 165.01 driver.

 

Thats the thing that gets me, I shouldn't have to do that. My machine is brand new. I'll definitly try the drivers but I won't overclock. Not savvy enough.

I would but I don't have 2 hours to spend on the phone with their tech support. Drives me up the wall.

If you don't want to overclock, then use the 165.01 drivers.

OCing is pretty easy. With the 97.95 drivers and the OC, I boosted my 3Dmark06 score up 1000 points.

Driver won't install, says its only for XP or 2000. I have vista.

make sure you follow the INF instructions located on the thread that I posted a link to before.

EDIT: The download link doesn't seem to be working on their site. Just try getting the 160.03 ones. I am pretty sure that they are just as good, if not better in some cases.

 

have you tried to install xp on your machine for temporary and then run 3dmark06 again? If so, what scores did you got then?

 

I'll try a different driver, but check this, i just thought of this. I right click the game icon and go properties, compatibility tab. I selected run as xp sp2. Could that be my problem? Will it only use one processor like this?

 

2GB of RAM. I don't hear the HD spooling up or anything.
