Unlikely.
Polaris 10 has a lot of thermal headroom and was stated that it will draw much less than 150W.
I would imagine that 1200 Mhz (at minimum) would probably be suitable for high-end laptop gaming.
800MhZ for 14nm is simply too low.

that cant be right @ratinox...i can reach that score with a healthy oc on my 980M, and it aint 60% over stock :d

Really? 980M achieves about 12.5K in graphics score (according to notebookcheck), while RX 480 gets >18K and that is really like 50-60% increase. I don't know why wccftech compared it to 390, while they should have compared the GPU scores, which was at about Fury level.

This is great news. Go look up a stock 980ti 3dmark score and the RX 480 is neck and neck! This with immature drivers and architecture!
1070 is reported to perform just above a 980ti at same tdp while costing quite a lot more. I think AMD are onto something here
Power somewhere under 150W. No specific data I guess (because no one cares in desktop scene below this number) - shaping up to be a good mobile card and perhaps they will make it "cheap" compared with NVidia mobile offering. I say cheap as in sub 500 dollars instead of sub 800 dollars that Ngreedia WILL charge!Last edited: Jun 10, 2016 -
Well, on paper 7870 was 175W (averaged, more than 250W at full load) and it's mobile variant (7970M) was 100W with about 15% less performance. It was said RX 480 will be consuming 150W at max, so average would be 120-130W. Theoretically it should be easy to bin it properly and stick in mobile form factor with very negligible loss in performance, but will AMD really do it? THAT is a million dollar question.
-
I think that they still play games and only use the "see we have 6pin, so 150W", where in reality it's lower than than, like ~100W, not to say less. Could be optimistic, but could as well be spot on. And the question for the $300 GPU is still open
As for mobile, it's up to manufacturers as well. I can see CLEVO, ASUS and MSi presenting "next gen nGREEDIA GPU" machines, which are at least couple of months away from release, but nothing on AMD side, yet Polaris is supposed to launch earlier. The only laptops with new AMD tech I know about, are the ones from the presentation, which are mid-range DELL and HP. There's still half a month to the NDA lift and maybe a couple of more months for OEMs to gear-up, but I'm getting nervous if we'll ever see AMD part in performance machine other than Alienware (and I'm taking this for granted, but it might not be).
-
its also up to us, basically. Clevo is not in touch with customers directly, only via community leaders such as @Prema or via their various resellers / system builders. so if a sufficient amount of enthusiast mobile users is interested in polaris MXM / mobile BGA gpus (mostly the former, naturally
), they should tell their resellers / system builders and also let people like @Prema tell Clevo directly about such interest. Feedback threads like this one / or that one already do exist, so make use of them

Edit: actually, with the current demo version of 3DMark on Steam I get a score of 0. The benchmark won't even start.Last edited: Jun 10, 2016 -
hmm....are u maybe mixing up firestrike with 3DM11? FS stock in my case is 8.8k, whereas 3DM11 is at 12.5k...

Edit: Yup, direct download from Futuremark also fails to run. Anyone have a link to a working, pre-Windows 10 "support" demo version?Last edited: Jun 10, 2016jaybee83 likes this. -
This is something I've been trying to explain to others... just because a new GPU is meant to replace a certain segment of the previous generation, it doesn't mean the new gpu will have same performance at lower TDP... in actuality, what we see with these transitions is that previous high-end gpu's performance end up in the mid-range (which is what's happening here most likely) segment of the new generation at much lower power draw.
As for 150 W TDP for 480... its probably less. 150 W is the maximum what the interface can provide and the card run at (if pushed to those levels), however, thus far, we have been told the GPU will draw much less than 150W.
Meaning that there's room for AMD to increase the clocks significantly until they reach say 145W (for safety margin)... at which point, I think they would compete directly with 1070 in desktop, if not overtake it by a good amount (if they decide to push the clocks beyond 1266 MhZ). -

In other news, the pricing of the RX 480 in Europe may have been leaked.

RX 480 (4gb version) Firestrike Ultra benchmark leaked. According to the leaker, this card was running @1080Mhz core clocks, which is much lower than the default 1266Mhz, so we can expect better scores when reviews come out.
-

What is this comparable to? Would be good to see current/old gen cards ultra firestrike scores.
-
If that leaked benchmark is legit, the RX480 is about the 980 level according to this graph. Of course, with the higher default clock and perhaps better driver optimisation, hopefully it can get closer to the Titan X and 980 Ti.triturbo, CaerCadarn, TomJGX and 1 other person like this. -

Bye bye Nvidia! -
480X in mxm factor with identical specs is NO problem whatsoever, with performance slightly above desktop 980. would be a really sweet mobile option and a viable alternative to 1070M. but, of course, AMD wont do it, because reasons

However, if they are, then I would be inclined to say that at 1266 MhZ, the 480 could easily give 1070 a run for it's money.
However, what exactly do the benchmarks indicate?
We've seen Polaris 10 being demonstrated in 2 DX12 titles where it bested both FuryX and 980Ti at high settings, 1440p by a marginal amount.
And while 1070 for instance would likely be equally capable runner at DX12 and same resolution and settings... who the heck would in their right mind spend double the cash on 1070 when 480 offers comparable performance and might also be overclocked to surpass 1070 nicely at minimal power increase?
I would imagine that they could easily give us the 1266MhZ version (or slightly faster) for mobile, while the desktop version could end up at 1400 -1500 MhZ (which should be well within the 150W interface capabilities).
It's all speculation right now... but it looks like 480 (at 1266MhZ) in general could easily be used in 1440p and DX12 at high settings (I see 0 reason to use 'Ultra' as that's just a pointless waste of resources where you won't really notice any big differences to begin with).
I was thinking that when I get myself the new laptop, should I go with 1080p or 1440p?
1080p seems like more than enough for 15"... though 1440p might be more suited for 17" (though I'm not sure if I want to go to a bigger laptop).Last edited: Jun 12, 2016 -
The guy leaked the image of Firestrike Ultra test was accused of uploading fakes and he responded by running live benchmark:
He got 3515 score and claims the card is MSI 480 and it's 8gb, but he had to replace the cooler with MSI lightning to avoid NDA, so the temps were super high.Ionising_Radiation likes this. -
Good News if these benches are true..Whether we get MXM cards from AMD is unknown but would be stupid of them to throw away this opportunity..
Sent from my LG-H850 using TapatalkEindru likes this. -
Yes, but as someone else pointed out, the Devide ID could have been modified so an older generation gpu would show up as 480.
As for the temperatures, it was described that the guy replaced the cooler with another one in order to avoid NDA, hence the high temps.
Too early to tell still I'm afraid considering there's a lot of people out there trying to skew views or make some sort of hype.
However, it does point to the premise that if these benchmarks are accurate, then the card is mere 14% slower than 1070... in which case, raising the clocks to match 1070 or even surpass it (while still remaining inside 150W on the desktop end) should be more than doable.
It also tells us that future drivers could easily raise these numbers by quite a bit.
Let's bear in mind that this is all still under NDA... so we could be seeing fake/modified results.
We know nothing of what kind of performance will the final product have (early DX12 demo's indicate pretty high performance levels consistent/beyond with FuryX and 980Ti at highest settings at 1440p).Last edited: Jun 12, 2016Starlight5 and TomJGX like this. -

So the RX 470 and RX 460 have been announced as well as a VR computer backpack concept (jointly by Alienware). Thoughts?

As a vive user, I can tell you I have had no problems with the wire. I am actually more hesitant to use a backpack because I am more prone to damage it by falling when playing games like holopoint.

As I wrote previously (I'm not sure if you were following the thread at the time), nVidia are targeting the high-end market where supercomputers and top-end gamers live. Intel's integrated graphics are very much at the low end of consumer graphics. These leave a huge gap in between for affordable consumer VR-capable gear. This is the market that AMD are targeting with Polaris 10. Intel have nothing that can compete in this range and nVidia are essentially ignoring it. AMD are playing it safe and smart by not even trying to compete head-on with nVidia. It's a wide open market for them.
This is especially true now that we know nVidia are intentionally restricting GTX 1080 mobile processor performance. If AMD were to try to push Polaris up against nVidia's flagships then nVidia would counter with Ti versions with the restrictions released for which AMD really do have nothing to counter-counter.DataShell and CaerCadarn like this. -

nVidia have a history of pricing their x60 GPUs such that two x60s cost more than a single x70. They do this to prevent x60 SLI from cannibalizing x70 sales with their substantially higher profit margins. If nVidia stick to form, and I have no reason to expect otherwise because greed, then GTX 1060 will have to launch with a price in the $325-$350 range. It's dead at that price compared to RX 480's $200 price tag, and anything less than $300 for a GPU competitive with RX 480 would undercut GTX 1070 sales.Ionising_Radiation, DataShell and jaybee83 like this. -
