I think you can get moar fps by clocking it like a 5165 (renamed 4650), that is
    550/900.

wow, well wouldn't lower the gpu but since mem should go higher, i could give 675/900 a try.. :D
and since the memory interface is 128 bit, clocking memory should give nice boost.. thx for the idea/inspiration.. ;)
(and i know how to blame if the card gets fried :p jk)

edit: 675/900 -> heavy artifacting then whole sys freeze in 7 secs on GTA IV benchmark.. :p damn. gotta find a better combo. but i've been pretty satisfied w/ my current oc so far.. tweaking little by little to find that threshold level feels a bit frustrating on a lappie..

@ XTC: do you also have an Acer Aspire 5920G?

Which temps do you get at Furmark?
How thick is your copper sheet?

PS: I don't think it's save to the ddr2 memory if you clock it at 800MHz. Because the upper memory pieces get really hot and it shouldn't get hotter than max Tj 95°C according to the datasheet from Hynix.

Wel thats no surprise since you have a 2.5 cghz core 2 duo cpu (well the box says you need 3 ghz core 2 duo but whatever), I need to know if its playable with a standard T7300 core2duo which is clocked at 2 ghz.

no, i have an hp dv6-1360us.. should put it in the sig...
just came around since the discussion was regarding 4650..
mine is gddr3 version so it should be fine. no copper sheet, i haven't disassembled the lappie as its fairly new. (had it few weeks)
would like to put some arctic silver on both gpu and cpu tho, but haven't got around that yet.

I think it should run smoothly. But I read that the important part of the hardware is the processor. So the minimum requirement for the cpu is a 1,8 GHz Core 2 Duo (recommended 2,6 GHz according to wikipedia) and your's is a 2 GHz. So it should be playable.
You can download it to test it.

Ye I might try to DL it. I remember I couldn't play the demo of AC1, probably because the demo was directx10. I can't play the full game in direct x10 either, but I can play it with direct x9. Since AC2 is for direct x9 only, downloading a demo might actually work. Nevertheless I think the 2 ghz cpu might be a bottleneck though, and I doubt i'll install a hd 4650 unless I know for sure.

    Hi

I have a little Problem with the new Catalyst 10.3.

Today I downloaded the driver 10.3 for the mobility versions.
I installed it and in GPU-Z it says, that it's driver version 9.12 and also in the catalyst control center.
The driver date is 2.3.2010 and it is signed by Microsoft.
But I'm not able to watch blu-rays with PowerDVD Ultra 7.
Everytime I try it says that I have to update a critical system component.
It is the same effect, I had with my 9500M GS when I installed a modded driver without a whql certificate.

    Please reply.
Does anybody else with a 5920G and a HD4650 is able to watch blu-rays?

I've tried all stunts now: dremelled, copper, screws...it doesnt get anywhere. Im fed up at this stage and cant think of anything else to do, except sell the card and try some other option (if it exists).

So up for sale is a HD4650, from ipc, still under warranty (3months left). If anyone is interested, PM me.

    Thank you

ur driver date matches mine with 10.3a installed.
so don't worry. i guess maybe only ur ccc is outdated, or it just reports wrong version due to registry as ati seem to forget to update its version number.
the driver is what counts tho.

    http://strags.com/

They've got the WHQL versions, which I think is what's needed for proper Blu-Ray support. I can't be sure though... I just rip mine ;)

    I just managed it.
Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra 7 was the reason. I installed PlayMovie and Blu-rays work now.

I little of topic but my 5920g has been diagnosed with burned disk controller, so it is not any value for money to repair.
I am leaving my beloved laptop for something new, i dont know what yet.

Sory for you dude, I sold my 5920g and moved on Asus usb 3.0 i3-350, 5730, 4gb ddr3 1066 cas7, 5400rpm 320gb hitachi lappy. Well looking for further upgrade, fist I would change the hdd actually I changed it with my Wd scorpia black 320gb 7200 rpm but unfuortunately it crashed. Lucky for 2 years warranty law in Turkey they will change its controller card. Somebody sells 1333mhz cas9 from acer but I believe this would not make very difference unless I found cas7 1333Mhz. Cas7 1066 is as fine as cas9 1333mhz. Well i3 can be upgraded to Qi7 later than graphic card also seems to be mxm3.0 a type.

    Sorry for the small bump..

I have a 5920G with an 8600m GS which is on it's way out and was looking to do this upgrade to the 4650. I had a read of MXM-Upgrades.com which has the card but the price has put me off a little.

Anyone ordered from this place which is considerably cheaper? ATI Mobility Radeon Graphics Card HD 4650 HD4650 DDR3 1GB MXM [HD 4650] - $125.99 : Buy Blu-ray Combo/Burner Drive, Blu-ray Movies DVD Disc, Video Games Accessories for Xbox 360, Sony PS2/PS3/PSP, Nintendo Wii/NDS/DS lite/DSi, Replacement Parts for A
Website looks pretty dodgy to be honest but it's half the price lol

See a lot of people mention needing a shim which is something MXM-Upgrades failed to mention.. should hopefully be able to get one made up at work though. Need to read the rest of this thread as I have no idea about the BIOS upgrade :-/

Edit: Nevermind I see those cards are Type A not Type II as is the case with most of the ones i'm finding. MXM-Upgrades is the only answer then :-(

You can buy copper pads here CPU Heatsinks

But I also don't know what dimensions. 1 mm thickness should be about right but I've read sizes reaching from 15*15 mm to 20*20mm.

If no one will reply on this question i'll open my acer soon and post the required measurements myself. I finaly got my paycheck, and will definitly need a stronger gpu since i'll be buying a 21.5-24 inch external full hd monitor PWN in cod4 ^^

edit: omg I can't buy from that site since it also has the same junk security bank system, where you need 4 digits, which I do not have on my card at all (so paypal with ebay is out too).
Why can't you just pay upfront on a bank account and receive your goods once they received your payment like normal european companies do.

I got the same problem with mxm-upgrade.com, and when I asked them to pay like I just described above, I got no response. Guess its either a fake site or one with zero customer service.

Am quite annoyed atm that I can't seem to buy any copper anywhere >.>

Ok as promised I checked the size of the required copper mode for the Acer Aspire 5920G. I measured 17mm * 17 mm, but it might be safer to purchase a copper pad which is a bit smaller (16.5*16.5 for example).

Since I upgraded my gpu with the 4670hd instead of the 4650hd, you won't see me in this thread again ^^

Hi Erig, would you be willing to share your 9600M GS vbios? Doesn't seem to be any on the net, and the one I installed on my 8920g just shows a blank screen at POST (but does POST through external HDMI), although it does load up the internal display once windows starts.

Please share your VBIOS for your 9600M GS if you can.

    Thanks!

Ok, the posts are a bit old now, but to make it clear: The Toshiba notebooks using this cards have the videoBIOS included at the systemBIOS level. The Toshiba HD4650 cards need an EEPROM with the flashed vBIOS to work with an Acer 5920G and three resistors to tell the card to search for a vBIOS (mod and vbios provided by .NetRolller3D). - I've just proved, that it works: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ace...b-acer-5920g-soldering-project-beginners.html.

Hi Kanchata, always REMOVE the power plug, if you are changing your mxm cards and do not use brute force. Maybe, you can post some high resolution pictures of the old card. Maybe one of the experts sees the problem then, but maybe only.

You can try to clean all PINs of the card and check, if you have lost some SMD elements of the card (...I know, what I am talking about) AND check, if the GPU and other parts visually intact. - If you plug the card, check, if it fits correctly into the slot, if the heatsink elements fit and use nonconducting thermal paste and check proper the fitting of the card and check the cooler is running after a change.

If you plug the old card into the laptop and boot. - Did you any hear beep sounds? What is the sequence! EDIT: Can you boot without any card mounted, what beep code you hear? You can also try to connect an external display, but for the moment it is hard for me to give the correct answer.

If nothing works, try to find a cheap replacement card for checking, e.g. a 8600M GS or GT for the Acer NB.

EDIT: Kanchata has opened a new thread for the problem, see: http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/697668-acer-aspire-5920g-blank-screen.html
