I have this sudden urge to host a Terraria server

 

Hosting a Terraria server is actually quite easy.
First decide on fully dedicated or host while you play.
Then all you need is a global ip, open the port (default is 7777) and put a password on it.
Also the devs actually coded well (not Java) so its very lightweight on the system resources.

It can handle a max of 8 players, but the neat thing is that inventory is shared on both the server and the player.
Stuff is chests are saved on the server or map, while items in the inventory and money in the piggy bank is saved on the character.

If you cant / wont open up the port you can also use GameRanger, as it fully support Terraria in the latest update.

Im currently toying with the idea of giving up on fragnet and invest in a proper dedicated server and host from my own home.
First i could start with my unused Intel Atom 330 with Ion nettop, OCed to 2,1 GHz and 4gb ram.
It was on htpc duty until i bought my new notebook, and should be able to support the small playerbase i have atm.

The pro's for this would be better managment, and option for multiple servers at the same time as long as the hardware supports it.

Con's include slower bandwidth.
The line im using now has a 40mbit up/down, so thats around 3,7mb per second give or take.
Ping may also be an issue for US players, because of the added distance.
(Still not as bad as my US hoster i tried for 1 month.)

 

Well I was reading it is not too easy on pc but easy on bandwidth so figured id be able to host easy.

I was just going to run the console server. Problem is static IP. I do not have one so like for mumble I use a forwarding tool so you just use the url to join but for games most of them seem to not support url's and only let you enter the ip.

Game ranger would not work so well if you want everybody to join when they want, it would only support starting the game and having everybody join at once just like borderlands right?

I do not have the game yet, but it looks interesting. I like the 3d nature of Minecraft more but the performance issues drive me nuts and I like how Terraria has all the items and stuff making it feel more like an old school rpg with a minecraft twist.


P.S. I need to get you on Borderlands. Me and Jeff have been farming chest & vendors so we have a ton of goodies for you and Jenna. It's Christmas early this year.

 

Added in version 1.02 of Terraria:
-Client will now resolve a hostname into its IP address, for example, if randomsite.org ran a server, you could type randomsite.org as the IP address and be able to connect.

So, perhaps it will work for you. Also, I would play on your server, a NBR Terraria server would be sweet.

 

Well that answers that problem you can use the same url for the mumble server for talking as you use to join the game.

Also im up for some Terraria sometimes, but my character is insanely owerpowered atm, been mining in Hell like there was no tomorrow.
Got all the endgame items, full health & mana, so if i where to play i think i mostly would stay at the surface building a house.

Yeah I dont want to lvl up and ruin the synergy, so we are both still lvl 21 because there is only 1xp for killing mobs near the chest.

I want lvl 22 bad though because I have a ton of lvl 22 gear waiting for me

People got bored! We need 1.8 to regain the momentum of playing again.

 

Yeah I got bored, then different mods, I couldn't figure out what to do, so just didn't come back. I'd be happy to try again though.

 

yeah i got bored awhile ago also just couldnt really keep myself going anymore lol. started playing project zomboid and have been addicted to that since then. havent really played anything the last week or so since i got myself a new pc and have been just migrating files. (installing pc's sux lol)

 

I ran out of inspiration and I was waiting for Deagle to get the plugins all worked out. Figured he was busy with other stuff so I pretty much stopped playing eventually.

 

When I lost zmod it was like losing a part of myself :sob: since then its never been the same....

That and I just have so much more to do that dump tons of time into MC. All the server moving, this and that, it became more than I was willing to tend with and so I moved on.

I also kidnapped Deagle for Borderlands so I don't even know how much time he puts in anymore.

 

I try to play sometimes.
But like the rest of us Minecraft got boring, but once 1.8 releases we can start playing again.
The sad part is that zMod died after Minecraft 1.6.6.
No more devs on the job.

My servers is simple mode atm.
No plugins, so no update issues.
Since im busy with work i cant put too much time into the actual maintenance.

 

No mods on the server....

Next time I log in I can imagine what I will see.

There is tons to see Me and DEagle have buildt a survival capsule, several houses, a waterfall, and some caves We did pretty well, but now there isent much to do...

 

Really? I can't see anything from the highest hill I could climb at spawn.

 

We did build near spawn.
Also most of the stuff is underground or inside cave systems.

Lmfao, I've actually been playing alot, but on singleplayer with the Aether mod. Its awesome! I really think Notch should ditch the Sky Realm hes making, and add the Aether.

 

I was on earlier but nobody else was on. Plus there was slight lag. I don't know if that's normal but I didn't think so. I found the derp bed room lol. Put my sign up on a bed

 

Is their anyway to join the world of Minecraft for free?

 

There's classic mode, but that sucks. I guess you could torrent the current beta version to see what the game itself is like, but multiplayer won't work, not to mention it's illegal

Or if you know somebody willing to share their account login with you, you could use theirs to try it out.

It's worth the money, I think, and it'll only get more expensive after the beta is over.

Oh are there any mods or something to clear out the spawn and maybe put like a small building or some signs so people don't get lost when they spawn in?

 

Im renting a Minecraft server from Fragnet.net because i dont have a spare computer with enough ram to support more than 10 players.

I played with a few people last night, finished up a small fort to hold me over while I work on my main project.

 

I am 1/3 done with my floating castle and I also built myself a house behind the farm. Check em out.

But do understand that i will reset the map with Minecraft v1.8, because of the addition of dungeons, new biomes and NPC villages.

I haven't tried Minecraft yet because A) my PC ran it terribly until a couple weeks ago and B) it scares me. Is it hard to get into and figure things out?

 

Not really. You probobly had it run terribly because of the OpenGL glitches with the DV6t.

For the most part, you'll start off using nothing but wood and stone, and derivatives of those.

 

Its fixed in the latest bios update, so OpenGL is ftw now.

To the poster earlier that said that minecraft scares them... Try waking up to 3. THREE creepers outside your house waiting to explode your face and your property. Here's a screenshot. I couldn't get the 3rd one in the screenie but they all went splodey splode and I had to rebuild my house... Not fun. Very scary lol.
