Hey! I have some more tests for a couple of games. I have a 2gb DDR5 with the i7 3610. My core clock is 970 and my memory is 2500. This is with the 301.42 driver. I cannot download the 304 beta because I haven't gotten an INF yet. :/ But anyways
    GTA IV BENCHMARK TEST-
EVERYTHING ON VERY HIGH WITH TEXTURE QUALITY AT HIGHEST-
I got an average of 50.11 FPS which is excellent
    BATTLEFIELD 3-
    ULTRA SETTINGS-
Average of 30 FPS which is okay I guess. I played the game for 3 hours and it was never unplayable.
    The Darkness 2-
    EVERYTHING ON HIGH-
45-60 FPS which is tremendous. That was the best performance I have seen by this card.

Surely the ddr3 version of the gt 650m won't act as too much of a bottleneck at 720p, especially if memory intensive operations like AA aren't too high/off?

xmikewest if you want to it would be very interesting if you could run the exact same tests again with the 304.48 drivers. If you don't know how to modify the .inf I can post a guide how I did.

I would be glad to. Thanks a ton.
I can also do a test on Assassin's Creed Revelations and Crysis 2.
Also, are you able to clock your GPU past 970?

How to mod *.inf file of NVIDIA official drivers to install on a system with a NVIDIA GPU

Short instructions (works for me and possibly all MSI GE60/GE70 with NVIDIA 650m,
see the Advanced notes if you have another system)

    1. Download and unpack the official drivers to be moded

    2. Search for and open NVMI.inf in the folder of the official drivers (open with notepad)

    3. Go to section
    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.0]
    paste the line
    %NVIDIA_DEV.0FD1.10C7.1462% = Section025, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0FD1&SUBSYS_10C71462

    4. Repeat 3. for all [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.*] sections

    5. Go to section
    [Strings]
    paste the lines
    NVIDIA_DEV.0FD1.10C7.1462 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0FD1.10CD.1462 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M "

    6. Run setup.exe

Advanced notes (use Short instructions as a template)

    NVMI.inf is found in C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Installer*\Display.Driver.*\
(the stars are numbers) open the folders with the highest number.
The naming convention of this file is NV**.inf (the stars are capital letters) this
is the only file named with four capital letters in that folder
(in the MSI graphic drivers there are only one NV**.inf file but in NVIDIAs official
drivers there are several such files).
This means that NVMI.inf might have a different name on your system.

Lines to be pasted are copied from the NV**.inf of the default graphic drivers.

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0FD1&SUBSYS_10C71462 is the hardware id of the GPU and can be found
    in Windows Device Manager.

In 5. use what is relevant for you from the NV**.inf of the default graphic drivers from
    the [Strings] section.

    In case of nonedesirable outcome

If you cannot solve the problem reinstall the latest working graphic drivers.

About the overclock limit. I can overclock my 650m gddr5 as much as:
core +135 MHz, to 970 MHz (MSI afterburner shows 969 MHz)
    memory +1000 MHz

I have read about someone that has created a custom vbios for their 650m gddr5 and changed the kepler overclock by +100 MHz thus allowing their 650m to clock up to 970 + 100 MHz. [M14x R2] - VBIOS mod for higher boost clocks - USERS FOR TESTING WANTED

About overclocking: 650m ddr3 +135 MHz core gives 1085 MHz core without hacking. Do anyone know if the ddr3 and gddr5 versions of the 650m operate at different voltages or if the ddr3 version can overclock to 1085 MHz core at the same voltage as the gddr5 version? What I'm thinking about is where the safe limit of the 650m/660m might be.

That's not the proper way to modify an INF. You need to get your OEM INF to make sure that the settings match for your GPU.

Refers to finding the OEM INF from manufacturer supplied drivers. Maybe I did not specify that well enough...

I wrote a more general guide. Do you think that this is better coolguy? I ask you as you seem to know something on the topic.

How to mod *.inf file of NVIDIA official drivers to install on a system with a NVIDIA GPU

    1. Download and unpack the official drivers to be modified.

    2. With OEM drivers installed go to
    C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\Installer*\Display.Driver.*\
(the stars are numbers) open the folder with the highest number. Search for a file
named NV**.inf (the stars are capital letters) this is the only file named with four
capital letters in that folder. Open it in notepad.

    2. In the folder of the unpacked official drivers search for and open the file with the
same name as the one found in 2. Open it in notepad.

    3. Open Device Manager, go to Display adapters, double-click your NVIDIA GPU, go to
Details, under Property choose Hardware Ids, copy the second value
    (e. g. PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0FD1&SUBSYS_10C71462)

    4. In the NV**.inf from the OEM drivers go to section
    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.0]
find the line that contains the string copied in 3., copy this entire line.

    5. In the NV**.inf from the official drivers go to section
    [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.0]
paste the line copied in 4.

    6. Repeat 5. for all [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.*] sections

    7. In the NV**.inf from the OEM drivers go to section
    [Strings]
copy the lines that list your GPU

    8. In the NV**.inf from the official drivers go to section
    [Strings]
paste the lines copied in 7.

    9. Run setup.exe

lh6kean, you need to make sure that the settings in the sections for your GPU matches with the ones in the OEM provided INF.

If you are doing it right, then it's good. You can ask me if you need any help. I have been modding the INF's for 2 years. The section numbers are not the same in all the INF's.

So I did all of this as best as I could and when I tried to download the 304 beta, it still did not let me download it :/
I think I may have gotten confused somewhere when I was copying and pasting. This INF stuff is nuts. I don't how you guys do it.

coolguy, what your saying is that I'm missing something important and it's not enough to only modify the [NVIDIA_SetA_Devices.NTamd64.6.*] and [Strings] sections?
In Device Manager I found an interesting Property called Inf section with a Value that matches a section in the .inf. Do you mean that all values in that section must match between the OEM drivers and the new drivers and that is what is missing?

    Thanks!

xmikewest as coolguy wrote in the post above yours something might be missing in the guide that I wrote. If you by download mean install and the error you got is something like compatible hardware not found then I hope that I can update the guide so that it works for you to. BTW what hardware do you have?

Yes I meant install. When I tried to install the 304 beta, I did get an error that would not let me continue with the install.
    My hardware is :
    • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • 3rd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM Processor (2.3 GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
    • NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GT 650M Graphics with 2GB GDDR5 memory [HDMI, VGA]
    • 8GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 750GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive
    • 17.3-inch diagonal HD BrightView LED-backlit Display (1600 x 900)
    Thanks.
    This is an HP notebook.

By the way Cakefish, where did you buy your laptop from (Samsung 550p5c-so3uk?) as all the places I am looking state that it has 3xUSB 2.0 rather than two 2.0 and two 3.0.

I see some 650M's in the 304.48 driver nvhm INF, so your GPU might be already supported.

Yes, the the lines in the section should have the same settings.
For example from the line "AddReg = nv_miscBase_addreg__01", when you go to that miscbase section, it should have the same settings as in the OEM INF. From the 304.48 driver, Nvidia started combining the Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 INF's. So, there should be 3 sections for each GPU.

The section numbers in your OEM INF and the ones in the Nvidia released INF are not always the same. You need to make sure you use the right sections meant for your GPU.

    Hello guys!

I am new to this forum but already gained alot information for my old lapotop(LG P310) and it was always an useful ressource for notebook reviews.
So I got my new MSI GE-60 i5 4gb GT650M GDDR5 but have problems with drivers(anyone else eh?)

I have tried the guide of lh6kean but then my laptop won't swtch automatically to turbo mode(gt650m acitve) in gaming applications anymore and it looked a bit instable(crashed browser) too.

Can u guys (Coolguy or lh6ken) upload a proper NVMI.inf or atleast give me some advice pls as u seem to be competent at these things.

    Thanks in advance!

The 304.48 Beta drivers support the GT 650m. You can download them here direct from Nvidia: Drivers | GeForce

NOTE: I found the hardware string for my card in the nvhm.inf file. Regardless, the driver should refuse to install if your card isnt supported. Just an FYI.

    INSANITY!!!   :D
How did you reach that score?

With the help of svl7 I can increase my GPU core speed to 1070 MHz and yet this is the best I have scored on my MSI GE60:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16GA score: P2947 3DMarks
and this is the best I have seen from a Alienware M14x R2 at the same core speed:
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,Alienware M14xR2 score: P2920 3DMarks

    Hi guys,

When playing game, I noticed that the Core clock of Gt650m on m14x R2 always throttles down and run at 270-400 Mhz after a few minutes instead of 745-800 Mhz although the temp is OK (~65) and I have enabled "prefer max power performance" on Nvidia control panel. So the FPS will be dropped :(
I tried new beta driver 304.48 and latest bios A03 but nothing changes. It looks like this is the power management issue.

The m14x r2 is known to throttle at 65c on gpu :(
That said, maybe you need a repaste, as I rarely get over 60c whilst overclocked (or maybe you have a higher ambient temperature then me in rainy blighty)

I will try to update these benches at the weekend.

Can't do it during the week as I have now started a month long intensive HSE commercial scuba diving course. So I'm out most of the day and still busy in evenings!

I asked svl7 if he could help me to increase the GPU base boost clock of my msi ge60 NVIDIA 650m since he had done just that for the alienware m14x R2 and he customized the bios. I 'm testing it right now, I'll let you know if he wants to make it official. All credits to svl7!

Happens to my Samsung NP550 as well - doesnt matter what drivers I use, after 20 minutes gaming temps at 87 or 88 c and the clocks drop every few minutes.

After 3-4 weeks of using a new Inspiron 17r SE with a 2GB DDR5 650M I have re-benchmarked it in 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11 and seen a significant drop in GPU performance.

The 3DMark 11 GPU score has dropped from 2091 to 1866 and Vantage from 8490 to 7665.

I've used GPU-Z and apart from optimus diabling it, the clock seems completely locked at 745.2 MHz with no boost to 830 MHz occurring. This would seem to explain the performance difference.

I have tried MSI Afterburner, NVidia System Tools and EVGA Precision, but any changes to the clock speed I seem to make using these tools do not actually change it according to any monitoring tools or benchmarking.

I have also tried the latest NVidia beta drivers, which do not seem to help.

Has anyone got any ideas either why the boost has stopped working, how to get it back or how to overclock successfully?

Have you checked your temps? and have you maybe changed your power profile to power saver by mistake? try putting it on high performance if it is not on it already

Thanks for the quick reply - GPU Temps are fine, idles around 45 and when doing the benchmarks was only getting to 60 or so.

The power profile is on high performance.

Did you by any chance update your BIOS? Your vBIOS might be embedded in the BIOS and that might be the reason why. Sounds like a vBIOS lock to me.

No, the only thing of note I can think of was apply a firmware update to the seagate hard drive.

I agree it sounds like a vbios lock, trouble is I don't really know what to do about it!

You'd have to wait until someone breaks the vBIOS for these cards, I guess. But then again, I think you'd have to try to look for some other solutions. Perhaps you might have to update your BIOS, actually.

Any laptop with a 650m has gaming potential.
The problem with the Apple laptops (especially for gaming) is heat.

You might want to find a laptop cooler if you are going to overclock that Mac.

102C on the processor (especially after running only 3dmark11) is danger zone.

I might try re-flashing it with the supplied dell bios to overwrite any unintentional changes, but there isn't an updated bios unfortunately :(

Beyond this, unless I can come up with a genius idea, I think I'll end up just having to wait, as you say.

    Thanks for your suggestions!

That cpu temp is why I think dual core i5's in thin laptops are a must.

Well what do you know? Turns out that reflashing the bios unlocked the boost and now allows overclocking.

God knows what happened to the bios, or whether this A01 version was different to the A01 the laptop was supplied with. Maybe the hard drive firmware upgrade affected it somehow? :p

Anyway, thanks to everyone who helped me restore the laptop to its previous speed!

3k GPU score? Wow..... That's faster than my 6970m stock.

Wait...if it's a vBIOS lock, does that mean us HP dv6 owners with our RSA-signed BIOS's are SOL? Or is there any possibility in the future of being able to overclock our GT650m's?
