It can, but rarely. I did find that dual core ran BF3 better with HT turned off, which is odd because BF3 loves more cores, but it runs better with it on with the quad core. Many laptops allow you to turn it on or off in the BIOS. But I'd say 99.9% of the time it's not an issue.

Thanks. I've been using 1600x900, with 'medium' settings, no AA and MSI Afterburner core @135 & Mem @ 200 (as per cakefish's recommendation).

FPS seems to hover around the mid-low 30's. Also, no noticabe increase in temp....but I must note that I have removed my laptops back plate so that the cooling pad actually works. GPU temp sits atound 75'ish.

Does anybody know the difference between the GDDR3 and GDDR5 versions of GT 650m? Is there a significant difference when gaming?

Only in FHD resolution (around 15%) , if you are playing 720p or lower there is no difference at all.

Another good score: 3067 points. Playing ALL FHD now. Haven't played Crysis 3 or FarCry 3 yet.

I will test my DDR3 650M with 1080p to compare to my 768p results I've already got. And do benchmarks with FRAPS on the games I've yet to benchmark (there are a lot) as I said I would ages ago.

Y'all have to excuse me why I'm taking so long to do anything -> reason why is the fact that my final year dissertation is due in next week and trust me that's plenty reason enough! :p

But gaming benchmarks depend on the CPU too . I was wondering is there anything which will clarify the difference between GDDR5 and DDR3 .
I think the clocks on ddr3 are higher than GDDR5 version so overall performance should not be highly differentiating . But i wanted to see the seperate benchmarks just to make the correct decision .
HTwingnut suggested me to get an i7 , and now i am confused with another two laptops :

    1) Lenovo Ideapad Y500 (59-346619) Laptop (3rd Gen Ci7/ 8GB/ 1TB/ Win8/ 2GB Graph) - Lenovo: Flipkart.com

    2) Samsung NP550P5C-S05IN Laptop (3rd Gen Ci7/ 8GB/ 1TB/ Win8/ 2GB Graph) - Samsung: Flipkart.com

Any final suggestions ? I know ideapad y500 has trackpad issue but it also has gt650m GDDR5 card .

IdeaPad Y500. It has GDDR5 vRAM and 1080p screen, and option for SLI 650m. Samsung has Blu-ray drive if that's important to you but I don't think that should be a deal breaker considering you can buy a laptop blu-ray drive for ~$50US.

In all serious, as much as it breaks my heart to say it, the Lenovo is better for games.

Yeah thats another issue. Thats why it runs short of battery quickly . Only thing i like about it is the option for SLI . It will make it future proof . I dont know if a single gt 650m can cope for 4yrs of my college . Nothing is perfect though :)

IMHO if you want 4 years of gaming with latest games, you either buy a $1200 laptop every two years or a $2000 laptop every four. 650m SLI is about equal to stock GTX 670mx.

So i have my over clocked setting on my dv4t-5100 with my 650m at 1150mhz core and 2700mhz memory running driver version 295.93 . All is good with max temps of around 87c when running over long periods. I updated nvidia driver to 3.10 something and a couple others. The newest one will not let me overclock past 935mhz no matter what state i lock it to. But in any other driver version i get overheating issues and my whole computer crashes even at stock clocks. Any help here? Should I not worry about updating to newest drivers? How much of a performance increase would i get if i was able to keep the overclock with updated driver version?

Once the new NVIDIA driver comes out which fixes Tomb Raider performance issues I'll post the benchmark scores and add them to OP. Same with Bioshock Infinite when it comes out :)

most games dont fully utilize cpus yet so by downclocking u can reduce heat/temp, reduce power drain which inturn lets the gpu be able to be OCed a bit more

Do you think i should do the same as you did ?
Im having a Downful FPS while being on default core/mem = 775/1550
But im forced to go downclocking = 662/1250 ....
Do you think downing the CPU might help or slove that ?
i used Throttle Stop ... helped for 50 mins ... then overheating + baddd throttling ... again :/

im think alot of ideas, including inf modding, CPU downclocking, vbios modding ? ( sounds very dangerous ) ... duno, please help if you can! :(

Edit: could that means im having a normal throtling or bottlenecking ?whats the difference ?

is it the laptop in ur sig? I have a different laptop than u then. but yes i think you are throttling. with downclocking it is just a trial and error thing. If you are badly throttling there isnt much u can do besides like open the laptop up clean it well, paste the heatsink, get a cooler, etc

    Video BIOS Version: 70.26.36.00.0A
    Video Chipset Revision: A1
    Driver Version: 9.18.13.1421
    DeviceInstanceId PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_FC051179&REV_A1\4&1575D52&0&0008
    Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1251&SUBSYS_FC051179&REV_A1

can you help me kill the throttling using this data ?

I was playing around testing gt 650m performance in 1080p dell u2311h monitor..

The result is interesting for me.. at the same setting,

Tomb raider/high : ~40% slower fps.. I have to change the graphic setting into normal mode in order to be acceptable gaming experience 40-50-ish fps. But i kinda dislike the overall image quality.. still good colour but less detail texture etc..

    NBA 2K13 + AA off @ 1080p: ~25% slower fps compared to 768p + 2x AA..

Trying to turn down the res. into 900p is an acceptable experience but not as crisp as native 1080p for some games. Because like Pro Evolution Soccer 2013, it looks blurry. On another note, 768p on native 1080p is  . I would not 100% agree if one said gaming at 768p in 1080p native lcd is still better than 768p at 768p native LCD.

Anyway, we test tomb raider with gtx 660 at 1080p high setting in dell u2311h, oh boy.. it's wonderful :D

I get almost 7600 on my physics score for single GT650M. You need to use ThrottleStop to lock the CPU at 3.2 GHz.

Hey i just got a Dell 17R SE (7720) - i7 - 8 gigs mem - GT650M and i am playing Arma 2 at 1600x900 with normal settings - looks and runs great for me. Not sure what your specs are on your laptop. I am still running off the stock 5400rpm drive as well, haven't put in the SSD yet.

Hey all - I have a quick question about how Optimus works...how do you know when the GT650M card is on? I did a windows index and it was only 6.8 so i am guessing it didn't turn on for that, but my game played pretty well.

I went into the nvidia control panel and selected the preference to run off of the GT650M most of the time. But how do you know which is being used at a perticular time? Should i just disable intel 4000?

If someone knows how that works and whats the best way to operate i would appreciate it. Thanks

I have an 8170 that I leave at home (this obviously plays ArmA II very well), but because I travel for work so much, I was looking for a smaller laptop to play ArmA II & III while I was on the road. I was looking at the Sager 6110, but I am unsure how the 650M handles the game. What kind of frame rates are you getting when you play?

hey i am not sure the framerate but it looks great to me...i can run fraps tonight when i get home and let you know. Arma 2 is CPU intensive so i think an i7 would help it...I play alot of DayZ so i wanted a laptop that can do it - one reason i got an i7.

nvidia control panel, Desktop pulldown menu, choose "Display gpu activity icon in notification area". Then make sure it stays in the tray there by right clicking the up arrow in the system tray and choosing properties, choose "customize notification icons" link at bottom, find "nvidia driver helper service" and select "show icon and notifications". It will light up when nVidia GPU is being used and black when not.

Switching? No. That just indicates when the 650m is active. That's the whole point of Optimus is not to have to reboot when switching.

Nope locked in BIOS/vBIOS. Wouldn't mess with it if I were you. CPU already runs extremely hot and giving it more heat from an overvolted GPU isn't helping matters.
