yep its in an above link and a rather skewed review if you look at it closely on the CPU side etc.

head back to page 24. the nvidia test unit was a desktop CPU and the 5800 was on a mobile CPU for example.

So? Without good software support nobody's writing for that platform. See F@H for example. ATI runs slower than Nvidia, even with superior hardware support. So stop talking crap.

There in lies the problem. With regards to F@H, the last client optimized for ATI IIRC was the one for the X series. nVidia seems to have bought them out since all recent clients have only been optimized for their own cards (with basically no improvement for ATI). Although I have nothing against them using their resources to optimize the client, it does seem odd as to how ATI has had basically no improvement throughout each revision, even when comparing cards from different series.

Don't be deluded, no one uses CUDA. And ATi's GPGPU power has already been proven to be significantly higher in DirectCompute which is a DX11 API and they are leading the way with OpenCL.

So I guess, I'll throw it back, stop talking crap.

It does seems that way with F@H. I don't think nvidia actually puts something in the code to stop ATI's card from performing better, but who knows.

However, ATI could've done something. It's really frustrating with them ignoring the GPGPU stuffs. So much power, but useless unless you want to write custom programs for everything that you want to do with ATI cards. On the other hand, seeing that they're in war with Intel too, I can understand that. It's hard to focus on two wars. Recently they hired nvidia's former CUDA architect or something like that. So hopefully things will change.

Uh deluded? No one uses CUDA? Try again, fanboy.

    I don't even know why I bothered.

Well, you know when someone who's probably never coded anything more than computer homework assignments tell you no one in the software industry ever use a certain programming technique, you know something's not right.

Nevertheless, I'm crossing my fingers on 480M until it reaches any user's hands, none of those reviews could really be trusted, eg from hot hardware:
If the reviewer don't even know that the TDP ATI always give is only for the chip alone unlike nvidia's, I really can't trust that reviewer.

The price is a big disappointment though for 480M, then again, the card is not even sold yet, so who knows, nvidia might just cut the price by 50% or something on release.

Photoshop CS4 uses CUDA; that alone demonstrates that CUDA isn't pointless.

Sure, in the future APIs that cover both Nvidia and ATI GPUs like OpenCL and DirectCompute should take dominance away from CUDA, but it's a slow process.

I really hope Nvidia will just give 480M Quadro driver support and make it a combination of geforce and quadro card to at least justify that price tag.

it's normal u know, this gpu is for nvidia fan only (like u see in the review). At least someone must buy this card :D
Nvidia fan would be happy to buy this card, common user not so much, that's understandable
Nvidia 465 for desktop isn't good compare ati (price/performance), imagine this card for mobile (it's a fermi chip inside a notebook :O).
Was really better put something like quadro, or gt200 chip from desktop, until fermi become less hungry.
Ati can also put 5870 desktop inside a notebook but isn't too much crazy like nvidia :D

A common user would be with an integrated gpu, not with a dedicated and even if they do, high end gpu isn't that common on the average user, no matter the brand.

well but you can do more than 2 hours with a 17" screen, not bad at all :).
yes sorry i would say a gamer user or something like that. Even for this user this card is too much. For sure Ati will do a better card than 5870m without this nvidia problem (price, heat, watt).

Finally some benchmarks that were not made by Nvidia marketing.

    Notebookcheck: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M

They note an average 10% increased gaming performance over the ATI5870 which is nothing earth shattering but well within reasonable expectations since its a newer GPU with better specs.

With that being said, I'll let you resume this civilized and... passionate... discussion. ;)

Notebookcheck should correct their ranking as the single GTX480M apparently scores higher than the older GTX285M SLI.

ROFL, sorry no that is not the case. Can't believe the Nvidia marketing.

On Vantage and in game, 285 SLI crushes GTX 480M. And I mean CRUSH.

Umm, which gaming laptop can game for 4 hours unplugged?

I'm pretty sure I could get 4hrs of playing Minesweep on my Thinkpad T60 if I lowered some of the settings...

I don't think a majority of gaming laptop owners even think about gaming unplugged. It'd be nice to be able to browse the web or watch a movie for 2-3hrs, but none of us expect to do any gaming while off the plug.

I have m17x in the mail.
For me its about sitting at one place in the house and playing and then being able and get up and move to new area. Or going from appartment to weekend house. Or going over to a buddies for a lan fest. It so much easier with a laptop.
Its about having one powerful computer I use instead of going between desktop/laptop/server.

One comuter, with most of stuff on it.

I was away for a week and took my entire gaming collection with me and plugged in at the location. You definitely are missing a lot of the point of how some of us use our gaming laptops.

It wouldn't have been very convenient moving my desktop, screen, keyboard, power cord, speakers, Router and everything else with me for that week.

Guys im not sure but is it still possible the 480 drivers are in a premature state (I know desktop parts are there but could mobility be a bit different.)

At the moment, we can see that the 5870 has an edge in price performance ratio, but the 480 has some aditional kick in some benchmarks, maybe some game performance,

Also i actually do try gaming on my MSI GT725/Advent 6555 on the 9 cell sometimes, i can get about an hour out if its a fairly demanding game or do 2 hours of old school stuff hehe, but yeah the m11x is the laptop gaming book for battery adicts.

I dont know, i think maybe its a bit too early to judge about the 480, but i could be wrong (I can remember the 5870 being quite premature and then the next driver release, some people were seing 50% increases in performance if i recall.) - I'm not saying this'l happen with the 480 though haha.

No, we were getting higher performance out of the box than review sites predicted.
    - Also for 3DMark 06, the marketed performance is higher than what my G73 could achieve.

There was a foreign review site that showed the G73 getting around 40-42 FPS in DX11 ultra in Dirt 2. I get around 43-44, so no it hasn't changed much.

With stock settings the GTX 480M is already pulling 130w. Some think there is overclocking potential, I disagree. It's very obvious that Nvidia worked with Clevo to get this to work as Clevo is the only source for GTX 480M right now. And if there was more room, the memory would not be downclocked as much as it is. This indicates to me this is as about as good as Nvidia could get it within the MXM capabilities.

And die hard Nvidia fans kept saying, wait until driver optimizations. Well it's been a few months now and nada. In fact it got WORSE. With 10.5 and 10.6 the difference between GTX 480M and HD5870 is even slimmer. And now the HD5850 vs GTX 470 is a complete joke, even the HD5830 is a better buy than the GTX 470.
    - So I think those thinking of these drivers providing magical boost in performance are dreaming, if it was possible, Nvidia would have done it by now.
    - And don't say they are just waiting etc. The new ATi Southern Island is impending, if Nvidia wants to make sales, they HAVE TO DO IT NOW. ATi release for their next gen is literally months away now.

5870M can fit in 15" laptops (M15x), 480M can only fit in a DTR with desktop parts. I can't wait to see an SLI 480M configured laptop, it will be ridiculous in price, size, heat, power draw.

I hope Nvidia is happy with their "most powerful mobile GPU" award. It's similar to a drag queen winning a beauty contest. Their aint nuthing pretty about it.

This is the only way I see its worth:

    Barebones = 1619.00
    920XM ES = 465.00
    4GB RAM = 97.98
    500GB HDD = 80.00

    TOTAL = $2262.98

Buying it at factory, prebuilt prices isn't worth it, imo.

Hey guys, I'm coming into this forum pretty late in the game so please forgive my noob-ness. I pulled the trigger and purchased an ASUS G73jh with a 5870 about a month ago. I have been following the G73 forums quite religously since then. For instance I upgraded to a 209 bios before it came out, and used Ziddy's Vbiosv3 etc.... Well to get to the point I noticed the upcoming G73 is using Nvidia fermi cards. I am a neutral video card enthusiast but I recently sided with ATI on the majority of my systems. My question is, is it yet safe to say I made right decision by not waiting and getting the ATI based G73 instead of the upcoming gtx480. Or are we still waiting on true results?

PS. I only care about gaming performance and budget, so a 120 refresh rate LCD doesn't mean much to me.

Depends on how much more the 480M equipped costs, but in the preliminary, it's safe to say that you've made the correct choice. The performance of the 480M does not back up the exorbitant premium it asks.

No confirmation yet as to whether the G73JW will even have the GTX480 or not. If it ends up with the GTX470 or less it should be pretty much on par with the ATI 5870 or at least too little of a difference to actually matter.

I agree.. something's weird,.. anyways , now we have seen it... GTX480M is not even P1000 greater than 5870.. i really doubt its worth the price for the lousier and lousier NVDIA driver support and this is from personal experience.... good luck to NVDIA fanboys.. i'll laugh when i get my G73 and it lasts 2 hours while ur power hog lasts 10mins..

I think he means that Nvidia has gotten worse as time's gone by, not that ATI is better. If you look at their track record you'll notice that Nvidia lately has been lacking in driver support, especially for notebooks. Also, have you noticed that the best drivers for Nvidia cards are not even the ones made by Nvidia. The best notebook drivers for Nvidia cards are the pre-customized ones by Dox and others at Laptopvideo2go.com. Take it from me, along with an Asus g73 I own an Asus g50vt with an Nvidia 9700gt. The best driver I have used is a DOX variant.

There are many more that would agree.

I understand that everyone likes to play for their team whether it be politics or video cards, but I have to give it to ATI, right now they're on top. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if Nvidia pulls out the big guns again in a few months and takes ATI down. Its just how the worlds turns.

I haven't had many problems with ati drivers as of late. Still trying to figure out why someone would pay $600 more for the GTX480m when it is obviously inferior to the 5870m...

Frankly this coming generation (480,470 ect) is worthless (price/performance/heat failure) and one to skip. It does seem however Nvidia has some very good plans on the way for the next mobile generation, looking forward to those VIA the upcoming GF104 architecture that can translate nicely to mobile form.

EDITED; strange those links were just working last night? Wonder what happened...

Thanks for the info but the links you supplied aren't working for me.
However, even without reading those links, I agree. I feel Nvidia got a little bit greedy this generation and may have screwed over their fan base. Actually, I will even go as far as saying they've been screwing over their fan base for the last three generations (if you consider the g?? 3xx series a generation). For the last couple of years, it seems, ATI has generally been releasing comparable video cards for a much lower price. At least then, however, fans have been able to fall back on the fact that Nvidia driver support was superior to ATI, but now even that is lacking. Here's hoping Nvidia gets back on track. I'd hate to see any one company have the monopoly on video cards. If there's no competition, then there's no reason to get better, as ATI lately has been doing.

There will be always good and bad over any product no matter what, ATI has come a long way... so has nvidia, flashing back to the desktop 4600ti days, when it was a wonderful card going into the 5900 where it was a mess and ati presented a great product with the 9800pro, then Nvidia struggle some till 8800, and ati struggle with the new 2XXXxt so on.... ATI delivered a great gpu with 4870/4890 while nvidia also had a really good gpu (imo) with the 260/280 just ati was cheaper and good performer while nvidia was faster an more expensive.... this gen seems to favor some ATI with lower power lower temp and great performer... next gen who knows... things change to much over time.

Now with drivers.... i think its even now a days, Nvidia has struggle with some releases, even one that break down cards, but overall most of their releases are solid from both companies. ATI in the past... had some weak releases also, i had huge problems back in the day with WOW and ATI, not present anymore... but having ati back in the day was a pain.

I'll probably stay with my current till i see ATI 6XXX and see if their trend maintains the same behavior of the 5XXX.

I completely agree with the majority of your statement, with the exception of the 2XX comment. I remember purchasing the GTX 260 when it was first released and giving up an arm and a leg for its "extreme" performance. Now of course the GTX 260 is/was a great card, but I went to a buddy's house not too much later and noticed he was running an ATI HD 4870. After comparing our two systems with some good old Crysis benchmarks he floored me. Not because the 4870 outperformed my gtx260, but because he paid a fraction of what I paid from the same retailer and still managed to get a couple of frames(FPS) above me.... Pissed me off to no end, ROFL. After that I still decided Nvidia were the ones for me, thinking maybe Ati just had a fluke. Even believing Nvidia's lies about groundbreaking technology they were developing with double the performance of the their GT2xx series. Well then ATI released the HD58xx series and floored me again. This time news was extremely wide spread. "ATI releases the most powerful graphics card in the world, etc. etc." Well I looked up the price of one of these cards and low and behold still less than what I paid for my GTX260.

After reading some reviews on how amazing the 5850 and 5870 was, I decided to start crying and I fell for my new love, ATI.
Take note that this is coming from a guy that's been following Nvidia since their FX series (which wound up being a piece of trash compared to the 9800 pro)

    Excuse the dramatics, lol.
