I wouldn't use the term "love" when talking about graphics cards. Whichever company produces the best performance with the best price is the one I buy. Lately that's been ATI.
-
Ha ha, well, I used the word "love" for ATI to compensate for my past loyalty towards Nvidia. I was THE Nvidia fanboy/poster child, then I grew up.
That's not to say I'll never go Nvidia again, but you get my stance.
Actually, taking a closer look at it, it sounds like a strange relationship that went bad. Just change Nvidia to "girl1", change Ati to "girl2", and change video card performance to cup size and you've got a soap opera.
Wierd Nerd- "Yeah John, Ati is the kind of girl you want to marry, Nvidia is just a FREAK that wants you for your money"
John - "Well I have always wanted to date a Canadian...."
EDIT : Excuse my sense of humor, if you don't get it, I apologize. -

Ah what? Excuse you... -
Nvidia drivers support is miles ahead of ATI's......
-
They USED to be miles ahead for sure. Now they are both equally poor, but the major difference is that there is more third party support/coders working on nv drivers. The third party nv drivers are also way better than anything nv officially releases.
-
This has been true in the past, this past year ATI has really made a good attempt at improving that part of their product. I'm not saying ATI is there yet, but I'm not always convinced the past will predict the future.
-
I can't find anything wrong with the 10.6 drivers myself. What issues are you guys seeing?
Man this thread is still deceiving because the GTX480m is really, not out. -
I am not sure if it is more deceiving or rather more seducing
-
I would say ur decision is excellent... the 3D screen will be a crap 1366 X768 screen which looks lousy on a 17 inch screen.. also the NVDIA graphics might just roast the G73.. ATI is just enough as far as TDP goes.
U dreaming? It might have been when it was 180 series but 190 series and 250 series have all been worse and worse.. -
No ever tried the 197.15 drivers? Those are some really good drivers as was the 180.84. Now it depends if you use TweakForce or not.
-
nVidia's driver team is superior, in my observations/experiences.
-
Regardless, performance wise, you going to pay $600 more for the GTX480m when it can't even out perform the 5870M?

The site is news to me.
+1
Edit: I don't see either of those drivers on that site. -
For now the 197.15 is very stable for me, before that I used the TweakForce 180.84. I have those on my harddrive.
-
agreed.. well with newer and newer drive updates more and more of the 5870M's power is comming out so i really don't see why to pay 300 more..assuming 5870M is 300..
-
Well I would like to see some user benchmarks first, kind of hard since no one has the GTX 480m yet.
-
How many driver choices does ATI has? 10.3, 4, 5, 6. Are they very much different in terms of performance? NO. When I update, I DON'T notice improvements. Nvidia's driver choices? TONS. and 197.45 is the silkiest smoothest drivers for BC2 period. I regret selling my Nvidia for ATI.
-
Fact is the gtx480m isn't even out yet. There isn't enough detailed reviews as of yet, so best to take all the info about with a GOS until the gtx480m is out. Who knows, maybe nvidia drivers will be that good to the point where we will see a 50 percent improvement over the 5870m.

All top end GPUs are for people with too much money on their hands. Most of these users game at a stationary location and a solution like ViDock is much more economical for the graphics power, albeit requiring a little bit of assembly. If you want the best then yes, you're going to pay a steep premium from the 2nd best and so on.
-
The price of the ViDock doesn't include the external monitor required and the loss of mobility compared to a dedicated gaming system, but that's the price you pay for a comparative solution in 2 parts.
-
As I said, most gaming laptops are used in a single stationary place (while the owner might take the laptop around say to class or something, generally people don't game on the road).
-
That´s true, for me however Gaming laptops has more appeal than a desktop, though I own both since the desktop is far more upgradable.
However the laptop takes much less space. -
ur hallucinating.. i actually thought u became on ATI's side but once a NVDIA fanboy , always will be one.. anyways , try the 10.6 driver... fixes all the BC2 problems.. but seriously , ATI has problems in 1-2 games.. NVDIA has problem's in tons of games.
very aptly said.. but the cost of a Vidock with high end card + monitor just mean that u might as well get a new laptop... no vidocks for me. -
Be realistic. I like ATi; they have powerful cards at a good price. But they can't even compare to Nvidia drivers. With 197.16s, I don't have a single problem in any game I play. When I had my mr3670, forget about good performing drivers, it was hard enough to get them to install correctly.
-
The performance edge that the 5870 has over my 9800m gts is VERY SAD considering how much more powerful it is supposed to be. 10.6 made no difference what so ever compared to 10.4.
-
so? is 10.6 better or not than 10.4? i cant get it
-
I don't know about you but my 5870 beats my 9800m into the ground. I had an Asus G50 with a 9800m, and recently upgraded to a G73. The difference is phenomenal. I went from running games like Crysis on medium at 1366*768 to being able to run them on very high at 1600*900, at a smooth 30-35 fps almost 40 sometimes.
Maybe its because I have my ATI over drive set to Clocks-800 mem-1100, but it still stays cool, so it might as well be stock. -
I would expect at least a 20fps difference across all games.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M is out
