Waiting for Broadwell and Maxwell before I pick up a laptop. The combination should be superb, in terms of both performance and battery life.

Guys it seems the GTX 880, 870 are already being sold in upgrademonkey.com, how come they have not been officially released:S?

Because those are pre-production samples and not final product.

When has a GPU ever come out, before the laptop in which it's to be sold?

Now, that is good sign it is already possible to buy and it have good price. Now just need to find in 13-14'' form ;).

That is good, especially it is an i7. Although would be nice a 25W quad core from Intel, but their weakest quad is already 37W which too much for an ultrabook.

That doesn't sound particularly legal to me. Wouldn't they have to advertise the product as a pre-production sample (which they don't)? Also, wouldn't NVidia outlaw the sale of pre-production samples, wouldn't UpgradeMonkey (the ebay shop selling them) face the wrath of law?

EDIT: Just checked now, UpgradeMonkey are accepting pre-order, so they're not actually selling them yet. Are there other sellers on ebay actually shipping 880M then?

It does 3GHz with Turbo and that is enough for everything ;). For example if some manufacturer pairing Radeon 8970M with A10-4600M processor, than this 15W Intel I7 is twice as fast and will be definitely enough for 845M or even for 850M...

I have found something really weird

Version history for AIDA64 Extreme Edition (Zip package)

But in previous ones the 840m was gm108 and 860m gm106

    So what do you think?

Hmmm.. So the screenshot of the GPU-Z of the GTX 860M was actually showing a kepler then?

Or do they have two version? (2GB onboard using Maxwell, 4GB MXM using Kepler)
    I doubt so.

Cloudfire, can you please purchase the genuine GPU-Z now. lol.

Yeah, I thought that too, there might be two versions of the 860M. NVidia have done this before where 2 cards with the same name can have different specifications, it happened with the 555M if I remember rightly. Yes, there were five versions of the 555M!

    what the ?
and how are we supposed to know what are we buying if there is two versions of the GTX 860M ? may be the 4gigs version is a rebranded kepler and the 2 gigs is maxwell..
but a GK104 for the 860, what are they gonna do exactely ? 1344CC for the 870M and 1152 for the 860M kepler ? or may be worse : 960CC and a rebadged 770M with a 128bit bus

    Its a mess.

#1: GTX 860M will come in 2 models. One for MXM modules, the other one is a model that is soldered on the motherboard.
The one for MXM modules is a cut down GK104 Kepler like AIDA64 update log explains. Here is the GPU-z for that model.
The soldered model is a 30-40W Maxwell, and it is a GM107.

That is why AIDA64 both list GTX 860M as GK104(Kepler) and as GM107 (Maxwell).

GT 840M only comes as Maxwell and is only a soldered model. Same with GT 845M. GTX 850M is only Maxwell too and comes as soldered.

    #2: Still holding on? Good.
GT 840M is listed both as GM108 and GM107 from AIDA. And GT 845M is listed as GM107. That is a good thing.
It means that the rumor as GT 845M with a 128bit bus is 100% correct since GM107 comes with 128bit since GM108 is only 64bit. It also means we will see GT 840M models with 128bit bus too. Those that are based on GM107. Probably the OEMs that requested the change because they want to offer better GPUs.

    tl:dr:
    GT 840M: GM108 64bit and GM107 128bit. Comes only as soldered.
GT 845M: GM107 128bit. Comes only as soldered.
GTX 850M: GM107 128bit. Comes only as soldered.
    GTX 860M: GM107 128bit soldered + GK104 128bit MXM.

    Source:
    GB4B means soldered.

ASUS should put the new architecture in their g750 refresh (860M) else they want to make them eat watts like hell..
i dont know what to expect from the 1152cc 860M.. faster than the maxwell ? may be, but hotter too..

Those APIS are, as Mantle, primarily focused on reducing the bottleneck between CPU and GPU, so benefits will depend on what CPU do you have, in fact this APIS could benefit a lot to those who have i3s,i5s or ultra low voltage proccesors

But it´s funny that now that AMD have released Mantle is when the other two competitors have done the same when they have had sooooo many years....

So it's likely the GK104 will be like a 70W TDP and probably slower core clocks then? But still a soldered Maxwell if 30-40W is correct, that's pretty nice. Hoping there will be a ~ 50W GTX 865m version with a few more cores and faster clocks. I just hope it gets coupled with 5000MHz GDDR5.

IF it is true then I don't think it will be a problem.
As long as the soldered one is using Maxwell.

As for the GTX 865M, I think there is a possibility since the gap between the GTX 860M and GTX 870M is quite huge.
    Probably a 3DMark11 of 6000-6500 ish GTX 865M?

860m soldered vs 860m mxm are going to be like 660m kepler vs 670m fermi.
I hope nvidia will NOT use MX brand to make it even more complicated.

A gimped GK104 will be using too much TDP, and won't be suitable for entry gaming laptop.
Should be looking at Maxwell. That is IF there's gonna be a GTX 865M.

I hope they have something to fill the gap between 860m and 870m. The performance difference is too big not to fill it. They could increase core count and bump up the GDDR5 speed. Maybe won't happen until rest of Maxwell products are released, but good possibility I would think.

Guys if nearly all the GTX cards are going to be maxwell except 860 then why are they delaying their release, GK104 has been here for years now..and please explain what does soldered GK104 mean? and how are they going to be like 660 and 670 if they are both named 860?

860M and lower will be Maxwell. 870m and faster (192-bit, 256-bit) will be Kepler updates until later this year when they shrink to 20nm.

soldered means it's embedded in the motherboard, not a separate card.

Possible. Just like the GTX 760M and GTX 765M.
The current desktop GTX 750 Ti scored a 6000 mark on 3DMark 11, and only required 60W.
Meaning they could use the exact clock speed, or maybe bump the core speed just a bit more.

may be less, i don't know if they will take the same freq or they will bump it down, low voltage memory can help push the tdp down to 50W i suppose :)
if the 860M scores 6k it will be a monster..

There will be no GTX 865M until 20nm is here.
    GM107 have a total of 5 SMMs. 1 SMM = 128 cores. 128 * 5 = 640 cores.
Which a GTX 860M most likely have.

The only thing Nvidia can do is increase clocks and sell it as GTX 865M. DOA.
Note that we didnt see any GTX 665M either. We had GTX 670MX later to replace GTX 670M (Fermi). Extremely plausible that will happen again.

Sorry, I meant they could do it to a GTX 865M.
Just like the GTX 760M and GTX 765M, spec the same, but only different clock speed.
Doing the same to the 8 series, GTX 860M will be 4800-5000, while the GTX 865M will be 5800-6000 3DMark11 score, different in terms of core+memory speed.
Doing so, won't affect the GTX 870M at all.
Real Game performance will probably be just a lil bit faster than a GTX 770M, eventhough 3DMark11 score is higher, due to 128bit vs 192bit.

    Edit :
Just remember that the memory of GTX 770M is only 4000MHz.
If GTX 865M were to run on 5400MHz, the memory speed difference won't be that far off.
So, performance will be a noticeable faster, not just a lil bit.

I actually think GTX 860M Maxwell might beat GTX 770M.
If it runs the same clocks as GT 840M it will score 5400++ GPU points, 400++ more than GTX 770M.

GTX 770M scored around 51xx-52xx GPU points.
Since GTX 860M leaked score(4800) as per your info doesn't get near the GTX 750 Ti score, meaning that it could be running at the same core speed + lower memory speed, or at a lower core speed + lower memory speed from the stock GTX 750 Ti.
Comparing 3DMark score of GTX 650 Ti Boost and GTX 750 Ti, GTX 750 Ti beat the GTX 650 Ti boost in 3DMark11, but not in real game performance.

Whatever it is, all of this are just pure assumption.
Take it with a grain of salt. :p

That 3DMark11 score was from what GPU?
The GTX 860M with 1152 core Kepler with a 128bit bus? Maybe. :)
Also remember that it was total score, not graphic score. We didnt see the whole picture. A desktop with a much faster CPU and GTX 750 Ti will score a good deal more than a notebook with a slower CPU and GTX 750 Ti (GTX 860M).

GTX 750 Ti does not beat a GTX 650 Ti boost if you look at the important scores.
GTX 750 Ti score about 10% less in 3DMark11 Extreme Graphic score and it happens to perform 8% less in games too.

Hard to say but very plausible.
    GT 840M beats a GT 740M by 35% and GT 740M score 1900 in 3DMark 11. So if one multiply that with 1.35 we get 2500 :)

3DMark 11 Extreme Graphic score would make more sense, I agree.
But since we have no idea on extreme graphic score of the new Mobile Maxwell, we just have to make assumptions on the P score. Which offcourse is not as accurate.

But yeah, let's hope that you are right.
if the GTX 860M is as near or as fast as the desktop GTX 750 Ti, then it will be awesome to have it on a W230SS.
Although I might still wait for the new highend Maxwell, just to be sure. lol.

question is, why would they lower clocks ? The 750 ti has a TDP of 60w, which is enough for an entry level GTX mobile card. A GTX 860m is not an ultrabook card after all

I couldn't agree more. That's what I thought in the first place.
But those assumptions are based on the 4800 3DMark11 leaked score by Cloudfire.
But as Cloudfire explained, it could actually be pointing at the GTX 860M kepler, not Maxwell.
So, I just like everyone here hopes that the GTX 860M is not a crippled GTX 750 Ti. It's 60W TDP afterall.
