AMD Announces 8000M Series of Radeon HD Mobile GPUs
Seems that most major brands are going to release 8000m laptops in the next few weeks.
Maybe Nvidia will follow suit?
-
most of us are more interested in the 8900 series though
-
So?
This is still interesting. Even if the 8900 series is more interesting, there is no reason not to take a look at this info. -
Performance/Gaming
Specifications on here. Now please enduro... -

lol there will be Enduro, switchable graphics is the norm for mobile gaming now. -
the "please enduro" was more oriented at it its actually working then simply being included
-
Looks interesting, but propably BS: AMD Radeon HD 8970M | techPowerUp GPU Database
Just too promising for 100 Watts!!

Thats all I have to say.
Good article here:

So everything is a rebrand? Lol.
-
nice nice nice the 8XXX series even have open GL 4.3 like the Quadro and FirePro cards nice!
-
Pretty much. Must be the worst rebadging of many years. The 8870M is even slower than the 7870M. Not sure why
On the desktop side everything is a complete rebadge. Their new flagship 8970 is identical with the 7970 GHz edition.
HD 7970 GHz Edition --> HD 8970
HD 7950 --> HD 8950
HD 7870 --> HD 8870
HD 7770 --> HD 8760
HD 7750-900 --> HD 8740
HD 6450 --> HD 8400
HD 5450 --> HD 8350
HD 8670 is new
HD 8570 is new
AnandTech - AMDs annual GPU rebadging
I really hope Nvidia doesn`t follow or this is going to be a very disappointing year. -
If that is true I am going to be very dissapointed, the new samsung series 7 chronos is going to have an 8870m. I was so exited because thad would have been a really portable laptop with decent to good gaming performance. I really hope nVidia does this better this year.
-
Wait so will I be stupid to buy a 7970M now?
-
With the entire desktop 8000 series being OEM rebrands, it's safe to say that we should start waiting for the 9000M cards, as 8000M will probably follow suit, by being 7000 series retreads.
We're probably 6 months away from its true replacement. -

There is so much focus on Enduro and the automated graphics switching to save battery life.
Is it that hard to simply have it kick in whenever you are plugged in to AC with high performance mode and use the IGP in power saver mode when you are on battery? I'd rather manually choose which GPU / power option, if Enduro results in problems with not activating the discrete GPU for certain games, etc. -
8870M: 640 cores @ 775MHz
7870M: 640 cores @ 800MHz
8870M: 128 bit @ 1125MHz = 72GB/s
7870M: 128 bit @ 1000MHz = 64GB/s
All of this result in this performance:
8870M Single precision: 992 GFLOPS, Double precision: 62 GFLOPs
7870M: Single precision: 1024GFLOPS, Double precision: 64GFLOPS
So yeah, the 8870M should be slightly slower I`m afraid
Well let us look at the facts. 7970M is based on 7870, the desktop model. One should assume 8970M should be based on 8870, the desktop model.
7870:
1280 cores @ 1000MHz, 256bit @ 1200MHz
8870:
1280 cores @ 1000MHz, 256bit @ 1200MHz
They look pretty identical to me. Unless AMD have some secret card in their sleeves, that 80MHz GCN 2.0 = 100Mhz GCN 1.0 , this look pretty depressing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I remember this in March last year. Not sure where that +20% for 8000 series is coming from

Still looks like a great portable laptop with excellent gaming performance. I was hoping for i7-3740QM or 3840QM CPU option, but this is not bad.
If I understand correctly, the 8870m will still be faster than the 7730m, Nvidia 650m and 660m, these have been the best gaming cards available in sub 1.5" thick laptops over the past year, and the chronos is going to be a ridiculous 0.82" thick! The only other comparable laptop seems to be the Razer Blade which is 0.88" thick and uses 660m with i7-3632QM (which I believe is slightly slower than the 3635QM?). I hope they include an option for 840 Pro or Intel 520 SSD.
-
Yes by all means, 8870M/7870M is no slow GPU
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
they arent, they are a little bit slower than the 580m, that is by no means a terrible thing for a 45w gpu -
well thats a bummer. But on a brighter note, my laptop won't be obsolete for a little while longer lol.
-
I might be swapping this Chr.7 I just got a couple weeks ago. Wonder what the price will be.
-
Keep in mind that the 8000/8000M series is not the GCN 2.0 for which we're waiting .
AMD isn't going to release two 8000 seies, one OEM, the other retail. The new cards won't be 8xxx. -
8000 series is rebadge.
9000 series will be GCN 2.0?
If they release the 8000 series in a few month, lets say April-May, they can`t release the 9000 series right after because that would be to mock the 8000 buyers and whats the point with the 8000 series then?
If 9000 series comes in 2014, what an extremely boring year this is going to be. -
failwheeldrive Notebook Deity
So the speculation is that they're just rebadging their current gpus without offering more powerful options? That would make an awful 2013 indeed.
-
No. It isn't speculation, and they are doing this to please OEMs with shiny new model numbers. The real 8000 series will be released later this year, probably by the summer.
-
"The real 8000 series"?
I foresee a lot of angry customers who in summer spot their 8970 just with better specs.
Not to mention the confusion wether this or that 8000 series GPU is really the rebadge card or if it is the real deal.
I don`t think AMD would allow two versions of each card. I think Kevin is correct, its gonna be the 9000 series for the improved ones. -

It would seem the 8870m is not exactly an identical rebadge of the 7870m, it's slightly slower and for whatever reason it actually works OK in a 0.82" thick ultrabook, a much smaller form factor than anything I've seen with the 7870m. The 7870m was in the enormous Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop, nearly 9 lbs and 1.96" thick -
Hmmm Interesting. So what have they changed? I cant see anything new there though.
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
What I'm wondering is will it still be faster than the Nvidia 660m? -
given the bugs and low performance of AMD drivers (far cry 3,hitman abs, etc..) i will go to get NVidia's Kepler in my next laptop..
-
Well hopefully that design doesn't mean frequently break 90C when a game is launched, and Furmark to meet its death
.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
actually you are confusing things, the 7870m was never put into any chassis, only its firepro counterpart was. The samsung series 7 gamer was equipped with either the 6970m or the 675m
the 7850m was used for awhile with the envy 17
still the 7870m is a 45w tdp part, the miracle is how much power it packs into so little tdp, it really should perform very similarly to the 7750, since its actually its a 7770, with 300mhz less in terms of clocks. -
The yellow series 7 gamer with 3D screen and 7870m had been announced but it has been discontinued I think. There are some videos of it on youtube.
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
The 7870m was in the rather bulky Samsung Series 7 Gamer laptop released earlier this year. Later they switched to using Nvidia 675m in this model. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
nah it wasnt, I kept checking tabs with it. There was a hope that the model would be launched with the 7970m, that didnt happen. In its course the series 7 gamer was launched with the 6970m or the 675m, one for SB and the other for IVB.
and thats exactly the model that I was talking about, the other series 7 the chronos 17'' one, had a 650m last year.
the 7870m was never released for consumers, just the firepro variant (m6000) in the m6700 from dell. The only released part from the 7800m family was the 7850m, only in the envy 17.
what is actually interesting is that the tdp for the 650m and the 7870m are exactly the same, the 7850m is rated at 43w, and the difference in performance between the amd and nvidia card is very large -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
There were quite a lot of articles about it earlier this year when the Series 7 Gamer launched with 7870m. You can still buy one of those models right here
According to PC-erfahrung.de, the 7870m was ranked higher than the 660m. I understand the 8870m is slightly slower, but hopefully it is still somewhere in between the 660m and 670m in terms of performance. -
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
interesting! my bad! I never heard of that model before, its a very uninteresting one, since the 6970m and the 675m are still more powerful, it doesnt really make sense
according to the benchies that I saw with the m6000 the 7870m is faster than the 670m and a little bit slower than the 675m, in other words it works like a true 7770, especially when you put them at the same clock speeds -
Why did the article mention that the 8000M series will be the first to include the GCN architecture? I'm pretty sure the 7000M series is based on GCN.
And I think the cards are only being refined and relabeled because the architecture still needs lots of time to settle in. Drivers are still in their toddler stage. This will be a good year for AMD to develop its drivers for GCN. Once the new consoles come out, the next big jump will come. -
yeah apparently its GCN 2.0 thats why they mentioned it
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Interesting, hadn't heard of GCN before, but I looked it up and it seems one of the most significant changes is improvements to handling of partially resident textures for games like RAGE (and presumably DOOM 4, also using idTech5 engine).
Has any info been released about the difference between 2.0 vs 1.0 and whether there are any specific improvements for PRT? It would seem these AMD cards will have a bit of an edge for idTech games (perhaps AMD can redeem themselves for botching the RAGE performance driver release). -
Perhaps AMD have some secret card behind their sleeves? 80MHz GCN 2.0 = 100MHz GCN 1.0 or something. I have my doubts but we will see
-
Hey, I have a feeling that the Nvidia 800M series won't even step into Maxwell... Not related to the topic I know
.
-
failwheeldrive Notebook Deity
disregard, I'm retarded lol
-
All of this got me thinking (lol).
Perhaps AMD is playing the same card as Nvidia did with their mobile 600 series? We had 670M/675M which was rebrands, but we also had 670MX and 675MX which was new. Maybe AMD will release 8870MX or something like that?
-
failwheeldrive Notebook Deity
Let's hope they adopt Nvidia's driver support too
I'm just really hoping that AMD and Nvidia will make some decent gains this year, despite using the same architecture as last year. I really want to upgrade to Haswell, but it won't be worth it if the big two don't improve on the 680m and 7970m. -
I think you guys haven`t seen this:
If the solar system models seem a bit less potent than southern islands it`s because you´re not matching them right. Because of the next generations rebranding the 8800m is a direct competitor of the 7700m series. The heavy weights are still to come on the second quarter of the year. Pretty sure thats it. Anyone know any oem`s already selling sollar system laptops? -
There's nothing in that graph we don't already know. The powerful cards have been expected around June.
-
Not really true. If it's new architecture and die shrink for Maxwell, there will be significant gains. But improving current tech really doesn't have a bearing on the new tech.
-
This is probably the single most important thing right here. I got rid a 3 AMD cards, (6990m and 2 7990m's) because AMD thinks those of us paying for their cards are paying for the luxury of being beta testers for their company. Until they consistently support their launches with functional and stable drivers and follow through with stable driver updates that actually improve functionality and performance then they don't deserve our money. I'm sticking with Nvidia from here on out unless or until that happens. -
failwheeldrive Notebook Deity
I was talking about this year's cards (8970m and 780m.) Maxwell should be incredible, with a single 880m being more powerful than a 680m sli setup. When I made that post I was thinking about upgrading to Haswell+8970m, but wasn't sure if the gains would be worth it over my old i7-3630qm+7970m.
