Just to reiterate what J95 said, next driver has been leaked.. 349.65 it's called.. Laptopvideo2go has it.. I will test it later but Ocing has been enabled in it and DSR is supposedly there..

I am not seeing the base clock offset grayed out, only the power and temp target. When you click +20, it does nothing?

DSR is a global option only and I tried 4x and it made no difference in benchmarks or games. It's probably an oversight. I tried it without and with SLI.

Destkop GPU's shouldn't be overclocked too then. I don't get it.

This kind of mentality needs to go. Especially when a company such as Asus, and MSI advertise overclocking. (Though their overclock is small compared to what others do, still. it's overclocking) With laptops such as the GT72 a laptop can be overclocked. It's generalizing and I'm tired of it. No not all laptops should be overclocked. But saying laptops shouldn't be overclocked is just not right.

Honestly, I'd give it up. They'll never understand that gaming laptops are made for performance. They think everything is built like a MBP.

    Quick poll:
It seems AMDs mid level cards are most likely tonga based, meaning there is a chance that for their m390 they have either chosen Tahiti or Fiji for their chip (Hawaii runs too hot to ever be a real contender for mobile). I'd like to do a quick poll:

How many people would be interested in going to AMD if they released their m390x on Fiji 20nm with HBM? With recent articles suggesting Fiji is 20nm with 4GM HBM at 1024bit.

Granted they are selling the desktop with a liquid cooler AIO, but if HBM and 20nm are cool enough for laptops (they should be with die shrink and HBM).

There's even "built like an MBP" notebooks that can game extremely well. :) Including the rMBP with the 750M, it's still capable.
I'm interested to see what Apple does on their next refresh of their high end MBP's now that Razer is intruding into their build style space with nearly shameless theft of design principles (GOOD THING, not complaining.. it's about time there's a windows notebook competing with them on that..). Also there's more and more games released for OS X. Not even going to pretend being a "hardcore gamer" isn't still Windows or nothing.. but Apple should include something special in their top tier rMBP's on the next refresh. We'll see.

If MSI can do it with the GS70, and GS60 (970m), and razer with the Razer Blade (970m), i dont see whats holding apple back, apart from the noise it would make.

Yes, though I will wait until both Red and Green have announced their flagship products to decide which one to go for - as long as it's a big enough upgrade in performance to justify replacing my 980M in the first place.

Their flagships are released, usually, 3-6 months apart though. .. In other words, by waiting for an answer from NVIDIA to AMDs release, sometimes NVIDIA only releases marginally better cards (except in recent history where nvidia has rocked them solid the past couple years, admittedly). If they wait and see approach is taken, it will be rare, if ever, that another company is adopted creating a de facto company of choice.

My 840M is supported along with a few others.

But there is a modified inf on that page anyway which supports all mobile GPUs.

Well it's mostly because I bought a 980M only a couple months back, so I feel guilty for even wanting to buy a new GPU this year! It feels like the sensible thing to do would be to just wait it out until next year for Pascal/[insert AMD codename] (& Intel's Skylake), but I know myself too well to pretend that I will be able to resist a 30%+ performance boost over my 980M :p So I need to wait and see which offers the better product because I have to maximise the performance boost over my 980M, or else I will feel very stupid indeed - and I don't fancy experiencing buyer's regret on something so expensive!

I completely understand that. I got the 970m because I planned on upgrading it and knew I could get 1080p performance out of it (no 4k screens on 17 in.)(stock voltage overclock Firestrike score 8546 I think it was at 190 core, 190 ram). Also, I can't justify a new laptop until skylake-e in laptop. So I planned upgrading cpu to broadwell, gpu to highest end of amd this year or next, or after pascal with nvidia b.c I figured nvidia rebadge this year because of maxwell.

Why the heck was my last post deleted?

All it did was quote a link about Anandtech going to test various gaming laptops with overclocking and a comment that maybe Nvidia's action did some good by bringing attention to the gaming laptop segment and OCing by laptop entusiasts.

    ...that was it.

    ...what wasn't civil about that?

Indiscriminately deleting posts in an attempt to do what exactly?
I for one wanted to read that Anandtech post later and it was *totally* relevant and proper.

Accidents happen, and cleaning them up sometimes means throwing away a now bleached pair of good blue jeans. I do apologize on my behalf for feeding into the discussion that caused this. To attempt and help correct this, here is the Anandtech article:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/8996/nvidia-mobile-overclocking-there-and-back-again

Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Although I abhor the author's skepticism for our overclocking, our battle with NVIDIA has generated enough interest for him to attempt some laptop overclocking. It did not say whether the author will break the +135mhz speed limit on the cards or not (which is a shame and I hope the author does to see fully why we have the opinions we do). This alone will bring to light true higher end gaming laptops/desktop replacement laptops IF the author does it correctly. Time will tell!

Did email Anandtech earlier this week and reply I had was of genuine interest. What is curious is Anandtech does review gaming/workstation notebooks.

But they have consistently for years focused on the keyboard (bloggers), aesthetics (they are apple die hards) and weight/dimensions. I found gaming not an issue since they seem to be console gamers.

Razer has for years been their top rated machine for the reasons above and Samsung/Lenovo for the keyboards.

Clevo usually bottom of the bin, for reasons above and even as far as to spend considerable text about low quality.

I just sent an email to the specific author of that piece. This is what I said:
    Mr. Walton,

I thank you for investigating enthusiast grade laptops and their ability to overclock. Although I am sure you are extremely capable with your abilities to overclock, as you pointed out, each laptop is unique. This applies to both make, model and variations between each due to the variances in the silicon.

For that reason, I would implore you to reach out to different, laptop specific, forums where individuals have walked this path before you and potentially be willing to make the same modifications that they have to overclock. I'm referring primarily to TIMs and higher grade thermal pads traditionally used in water cooling solutions and other advanced cooling systems (such as Fujipoly Extreme 11W/mK and Fujipoly Ultra Extreme 17W/mK). We do understand safety and gauging the temperature.

In addition, I would request a section on undervolting alone, without an overclock. Some members of the community do this to keep the temperatures low enough that the fans barely, if ever, are noticeable and to extend the life of their silicon. This feature is often locked without modded vbios for the video card, but is usually a large complaint that we cannot change the voltage to maximize the longevity of our hardware outside of the situations that we push it to greater limits.

Finally, I ask that you reach out to the community of laptop overclockers for advice where you may find yourself stuck and not being able to find a work around. It may have already been addressed and an answer given. Thank you for your consideration on this matter and I appreciate your dedication to the computer community as a whole.

    Best Regards,

Interesting. Different tone I got, I got a short answer saying he would bring to attention of their blogger.

Sounds like CYA answer to me. Not surprising since Anandtech depends on not upsetting OEMs. And they aren't extreme gamers etc. They are nerd bloggers.
