Thanks for the informations, I'll look for it up in google.

Huh? How come I can't overclock my 8400GS? I have the 156.65 drivers as suggested and I cannot OC with RivaTuner. I can't even find a 'Test' button to see if it works. i.e, when I adjust the slider and press OK , it just reverts back to the default speed.
-
I found Rivatuner but I couldent OC it...
-
What driver are you using Sam?
-
Hi guys, Ive got a 8400M gs and was wondering if these stats are ... normal
Total Available graphical memory: 831
Dedicated videomemory: 64mb
Shared Systemmemory:767mb
Also systemrequirements labs says I only have 64 mb videomemory and my 3dmark06 score is 943
I've got the latest 150 series drivers... -
gonna try the 163.69 drivers now ... maybe they help solve anything
btw also have problems with running high shader settings in games ( and directx 10 , but guess that is normal) -
lol the 8400gs runs DX10 crap. It's like the nVidia Geforce FX5200. It was the first nvidia card to be dx9 compatible but it could barely run any games with decent fps.
-
Haha... my 8400GS plays stuff fine. It plays FEAR on medium settings at 1280x800. FPS is good, and the game looks nice! It also plays CSS and HL2 great! That is when it is overclocked quite a lot though. When stock I get 2900 in 3dmark05. Overclocked ~4700.
-
what?! 4700? Wow thats quite high. What mem/core clock speeds you getting? And what drivers?
btw, I get 3100 stock on 156.65. -
Jason what are those games like when you have not overclocked the GPU? Are they still playable?
-
Yes of course they are. Jason, I'm not sure about your system, but without overclocking, I can run CS:Source and HL2 near max settings with 2xAA. Same goes with FEAR.
-
So ... are there 3 versions of the 8400M GS ?
like 64 mb , 128 mb and 256 mb ? -
how does the 8400M GS compare with the 6800GT?
Cheers,
Neil. -

Question is the XPS-M1330 8400G-m editable with Nibitor for BIOS OC'ing?
If yes: what are the most stable tested clocks so far? -
-
I have a HP Pavilion dv2000 with the 8400m gs 64mb chip. The strange thing i i cant update video drivers, not with hp drivers nor Forceware drivers from nvidia. I get messages like.
I have Vista home premium and try to use 32 bit drivers for Vista.
ForceWare
"The NVIDIA setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."
Another thing that bothers me is that TechPowerUP GPU-Z say that Memory Type: SDR. Does they even exist?
Any advice?Attached Files:
-
-
Check the sticky for it's section on updating video drivers. You have to either use HP's drivers for your card or use modified drivers from LaptopVideo2Go, or use nVidia drivers that are specially marked for laptops. And no, you don't have SDR memory, GPU-Z is still buggy.
-
so whats the verdict?
What bios are overclockable and give the highest performance for Vista -
sweet, I just played call of duty 4 on a 8400 gs, turned anti aliasing down and got rid of glow, ran pretty well. I underestimated the power of this card.
-
The verdict on the Dell 1420 with 8400m GS is that it appears the GPU bios is integrated and unable to be flashed.. I've been digging through everything I can find to see if this is true.. but Nvflash/Nibitor can't get any info from my GPU so im thinking it's a no go.. Software overclocking seems to be the only way to get any extra juice on a 1420... Which is sad, because I can't find any newer 163+ drivers that allow for overclocking.
-
I'm on XP home and want to get these straight:
1. Which driver from laptopvideo2go is best for overclocking my 8400m GS? It looks like the latest 15x series driver for XP is 158.51
2. What do I have to do to install these drivers? Do i need a modded INF file or is that only for 16x series? Do i have to use tools like Driver Cleaner Pro to uninstall my stock drivers? -
guys I'm having a really f-ed up problem with my vostro1500's 8400m GS.
I upgraded my stock drivers to 158.22 for XP,
(uninstalled the drivers, ran driver cleaner in safe mode)
Now I cant overclock with RivaTuner or ATI Tool at all, it keeps going straight back to default clocks right after I shift the clock sliders.
WTF IS WRONG??!!
I've checked some other threads and people are having the same problem.
There's got to be another option besides a complete reinstall of the OS. -
WARNING TO ALL XP USERS:
You Cannot overclock if you upgrade to any of the 15xx or 16xx series drivers without flashing Bios. In my opinion it is better to stick with the stock 10xx drivers and overclock, than it is to upgrade to newer drivers without overclocking:
3DMark05 Scores:
158.22 - 2576
156.66 - 2587
163.16 - 2579
163.76 - 2642
101.28 (stock) overclocked from 400/400 to 425/460 (barely any overclocking) - 2722
I'm not sure if the overclocking problem applies to everyone on XP, but I know it applies to most people based on extensive forum research on my part.
If anyone has found a newer driver thats overclockable please let me know. -
I'm downgrading from a 8600m gt to a 8400m gs, wish me luck =)

Hello there.
I'm thinking about buying a Vostro from Dell (1400 or 1500), which will come with a Geforce 8400M GS (unfortunately, Dell doesn't offer the 8600 option in my country, except for the Vostro 1700...).
I will use this notebook for academic purposes, however I also play RPGs and I want to play Neverwinter Nights 2 in it (right now, a desktop would be highly inappropriate, since I can use the wireless conection in the university).
I would like to know if this game would run smoothly in this notebook. It will have a Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz Processator and 1 or 2 GB of RAM memory, but I am mainly worried about the video card because I cannot change it.
People say Neverwinter Nights 2 looks pretty bad with low-graphics options, so I would like to know if it would work fine with at least mid-graphics options.
It seems that Mask of the Betrayer and the last patch of the game improved the FPS, but I'm not sure.
If I cannot have an enjoyable experience with NWN2, I will wait for a better card option.
Thanks already. -
GREAT NEWS EVERYONE!
Apparently the new modded 167.26 driver can now allow overclocking the 8400m gs in XP!!

i myself just bought bought a laptop with 8400m gs and it runs hl2 extremely well. i also just downloaded the ut3 demo and it also seems to perform admirally at mid settings and 800x600.if given the choice though definitely go with the 8600.

Hi im looking at a laptop with this card in it, and was wondering if you think that it would be able to handle games like football manager 2008 and the sims 2 with couple exspansion packs?
the laptop aswell has:
DELL Vostro 1400, 2.00GHZ (DUAL CORE 2), 120HD, 2 GIG DDR
i think this may contribute to how well the game plays..not looking for graphics just want to know if they will run with no problems such as like lag, just want the game to run at speed
thanks in advance -
looks like you should be fine for those games...especially if you turn the graphics settings to low/med
-
So ATM what's the best driver?
-
What fps does the 8400M GS get with CS:S with everything on max except AA/AF at 1280x800 without HDR?
-
i'm running 1280x800 without hdr 2xaa/4xaf very smoothly, didn't use fraps but i'm guessing 40-50 fps at least?
edit: 58.51 on the stress test -
-
I've just ordered a new Vaio FZ, C2D 2.2ghz / 2GB / 8400GT 256MB. I have no experience at all with the GF8-series, but will this laptop run games like Quake 4, Half-Life 2 and maybe Bioshock on atleast medium settings in 1280x800?
FPS is pretty important to me, and I need at least around 30 to be able to enjoy the games.
Sorry if someone asked about this already. -
I just placed an order on a dv6500t with the 128mb 8400m GS. I also picked up the T7500 processor... is this CPU overkill combined with a 8400m GS machine?
I'll be using the notebook with engineering 3D cad SW, games (FS, rFactor), surfing, vids, etc. It would just save me some $ if I downgraded CPU. -
-
Thanx for your answers. Quake 4 is the most important game of them, so I guess I can relax for a while!
-
i overclocked my 8400m gs to 640/520
(max clocks using atitool were 685/530)..3dmark05 score 3864...
and play bioshock on 1024x800 w/ low settings averaging 28fps,
med settings avg around 22 fps -
I have a Dell 1520 with the 8400 M card. I noticed on Nvidia's website that the memory is supposed to be clocked at 600 mhz, but when I run Nvidia's program it tells me that mine is at 400mhz. Is this something that Dell does to the chip, or is it possible that my Dell drivers are just terrible, or what?
-
It's possible the chip is just underclocked, it's possible Dell undervolted it, it's possible your program is incorrectly reporting the clockspeed.
In any case, I wouldn't worry about it. -
The reason for that is that Dell uses ddr2 memory in the 1500 series notebooks, and ddr3 memory in the 1400 series. This appears to apply to both the Vostro and Inspiron lines. The ddr3 memory in the smaller notebooks has proven to be very overclock friendly. I'm assuming they do this because the ddr3 memory runs cooler, so is a better choice in the smaller notebooks.

any ideas how simcity4 will run on a Sony SZ583N/CE1?
-
Completely random post about my 8400M GS performance.
I was bored today and decided to play around with some OC'ing of my card.
I have an SZ680-NO3.
3dmark05: 3762 (OC 600/815)
3dmark06: 1968 (OC 600/800)
Using 169.04 my stock scores were around 2900 '05 and 1450 '06.
I think that shows some pretty good potential for a lower-powered card.
The temps were a bit high, peaking right around 90 celcius after playing Half-Life: Lost Coast for half of an hour. -
Is this thread just pertaining to the 8400GS? So far I have had great experience with my 8400M GT. Call of Duty 4, 1024x768, all textures on "Extra", AAx2, and never drop below 35FPS. I haven't tried adjusting the settings yet.
-
Nah, I'd assume it's for all of the 8400M variety. Glad to hear you're enjoying your lappy!
-
hey
im looking at buying a laptop, however all it says about the graphics card is this:
Graphic: nvidia 8400M 896mb turbo cache the laptop has 2gb ddr2 ram.
i went and checked it out and i asked the guy what 8400M was it (as in was it a G, GS or GT) and he said "it's just a Go series, the cards your talking about are for desktops" which puzzled me abit...
so how do i know what series it is? next time i think i will talk to someone abit more in tune with things was in a rush so couldnt really see anyone else.
also what does 'dedicated ram' mean? and whats a bad/good/great amount to have? -
Right click the desktop, and look in the Nvidia Control Panel. At the bottom left, click "System Information". It will tell you there.
-
-
Has anyone tried any of modded drivers for the 8400M G, and found any improvement in performance. If so, can you please post the version you tried.
Thanks
