All the games i played before updating my graphics card has a slow loading time and will have a hard time getting the fps to stabalize to 25-30.

it will tell me what? dont mean to sound like a prick, but cant you just tell me?

if anyone else can help me out would be appreciated...

Graphic: nvidia 8400M 896mb turbo cache the laptop has 2gb ddr2 ram.

i went and checked it out and i asked the guy what 8400M was it (as in was it a G, GS or GT) and he said "it's just a Go series, the cards your talking about are for desktops" which puzzled me abit...

so how do i know what series it is? next time i think i will talk to someone abit more in tune with things was in a rush so couldnt really see anyone else.

also what does 'dedicated ram' mean? and whats a bad/good/great amount to have?

What brand are you going to buy, if it is acer then it will most likely be a 8400m G.

What is the end of that card? either G, GS or GT. but any of those will run FIFA 08 well. checked systemrequirements lab and it says that my laptop can handle it at recommended settings.

    Asus F3SC:
    Processor: CORE2DUO T7300 2.00GHZ,
    HDD: 160G,
    Memory: 2x1GB DDR2 667MHZ,
    Screen: 15.4 * WXGA COLOURSHINE,
GPU: GEFORCE GO 8400M/128/384MB TURBO *

yeah i think your right it is a 8400m G.. with 128mb dedicated

is there really much of a difference between the different 8400m chips?

i know its a long shot but i cant find it... does anyone have the link to this thread where someone posted screen shots of various games using an 8400m i think the games were battlefield 2 and this other one that looked like final fantasy(2-3 girls on steps, greyish bg)... there was also shots of House and another Tv show.

There is quite a difference in their performance. Although even the G can still play latest games in lowest settings. It also depends on what kind of games you play.

Strange that I have problems playing FIFA WORLD CUP 06 on my laptop. Its not that the game runs slow, it gets slow sometimes, however, the menu and options run considerably slow, one has to wait like forever to select a team.

Furthermore, my Friend who has a Core Duo (not 2 duo) 2.00 GHz, with GMA 950, seems to run the game smoothly with any issues.

Some other games I found issues of slowness are:
    Call of Duty 4
    Legay of Kain: Defiance

No, I haven't updated My drivers yet.
But considering that it might give me a performance boost, I will do it tomorrow. (The Tweakforce version)

Download Rivatuner (latest version). The driver version (i think) does not allow overclocking BUT if you press the check box that says "allow hardware overclocking". There will be a boost in its overall performance

I already followed this guide. It is just that after i set the frequencies and click the OK button, the frequencies will just reset back to it's original state.

There is also no TEST button.

But as I said Rivatuner when you check the "hardware overclocking" box. It will still have a performance boost than not having it checked.

I have read a lot about the upcoming 9 series refresh, but no one has mentioned anything about low end cards. Will the 8400 be getting replaced by a 65nm 9400?

I have a 8400M G in my lappy (watch my sig).
I have it OC´ed to 500/500 and I got a good performance improvement using 169.09 modded drivers in WinXP XP2. I got 1422 in 3DMark06.
I haven´t OC´ed to higher levels because above that numbers the system becomes unstable. Don´t know why because I´ve seen people with higher numbers.
In Vista I got 3.4, 3.4 in Aero and 4.1 in games, the rest is almost the same as you. I got this score with Aero turned off and with 157,67 drivers.
    How do you have 4??
    Cheers

I used 173.65, can't overclock GPU using any tool(ntune, riva or atitool), but used riva to overclocked shader to max, used ntune to overclock my motherboard's FSB, ntune to overclock my CPU to 2.38GHZ from 1.9

That's pretty much it. my temps are always at 55 C for CPU while GPU near 80 when gaming normal is 65C.

What is the max for the shader clock?
And how do you use the ntune to overclock FSB and CPU?
You´re using which version of WinVista?

there is a setting in mine in the performance tab that lets me do it(I think this is only for Nvidia based motherboard)

The part of the FSB and CPU I won´t because I think it´s impossible. But I´ll give a try with the shader clock on SuC and COD4.
I just asked for curiosity coz I know I can´t go much further with this G.
I forgot to mention that with OC to 500/500 my temps never passed the 71º. In some games it doesn´t pass the 65º (like PES).

No I don´t have a cooling pad yet. My lappy is 15.4, it´s bigger so probably doesn´t generate so much heat, yours probably smaller right? Sometimes I use 2 things (don´t remember the name, sorry) that are used to close/open the plastic bottles (p.e. water bottles) to put under and in the back of my lappy to make it higher for the air get out and not 2 be in contact with the surface keeping him cool. hope you understood what I said.
500/500 is a small OC, it´s a 5-15 FPS improvement depending on the games. The temp with or without OC is almost the same.

It's 14 inches, maybe your right. I am still looking for drivers that can help me overclock.

Your method is just like mine only thing is that mine are not plastic bottlesw but a stand for action figures or something like that.

Is it cold in your country???

I´m from Portugal and it´s not very cold right now, about 15º-20º depending if the sun is up or not.
The drivers that let u overclock is definitely 169.04 and one time I did with the 169.28 in Vista. Now I use Vista for work and XP for playing.
And I was wrong, instead of 71º it should be 75º, it´s the top temp I reached playing SuC (OC´ed) but without lifting the laptop.
Yesterday I was playing PES2008 with the laptop lifted and max temp was 67º, with and without OC.
    Take care

Tried 169.04, yes it lets me overclock and i got aboost in My windows experience index(Gaming went up to 4.8) Bbuuuuut my FPS went down to 35fps from 41 in Halo2, while I overclocked it to 550mhz core.

I had to go back to 173.65 driver to get the best performance

(If thats not cold here in my country, The Philippines it is already considered very cold, normal temps here at midday are between 35 C to 45 C.)

OK, your country is really hot, that should explain the temps you have.
The funny thing is that yesterday I tried the 173.65 and they let me overclock. I used nTune, not tried Rivatuner yet.
Only with the driver the Win Exp Index went from 4.1 to 4.3 in Games and Aero stayed the same, 3.4.
    OC´ed to 500/500 I got 3.6 in Aero and 4.6 in Games.
Not tried in real games because I got them installed in my XP partition.

The 8400G isn't meant to be overclocked, and is not really a powerful card. I pushed my GT to 550/650, but only because the DDR3 allows for much cooler data transfer. The GT also has twice the vertex shaders, which is really what makes the difference. With my clocks after a few hours of Call of Duty 4, it gets up to around 74-76C max.

    Hello.

I'll soon be buying this laptop:

Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core T2310 (2x 1,46GHz)
    Cache: 1MB L2
    Memory: 2GB DDR2 (2x 1GB)
    HD: 160GB SATA (5400rpm)
    Screen: TFT 15.4" BrightView WXGA (1280 x 800)
    GPU: nVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
    GPU memory: 895MB TurboCache (128MB dedicated + 767MB shared)

Due to my limited budget and urgency (it's readily available at a close store) this will be very likely what I'm buying.

I assume WoW will play fine by the previous posts, but I'm curious about another "old" game...

Will GTA: San Andreas run fine on a machine like this? I used to play it on my PS2 but it's broken and I miss that game... I found it for PC at a very cheap price and if my new laptop could handle it (with high quality) I'd love to revive it again.

    Thank you.

Arruda: Yes GTA will run fine on the highest settings possible with no fps lag.

Anyone know if a 8400m gs can handle Flight Simulator X + Acceleration expansion pack? If so, what level gfx settings?

Also purchasing a logitech extreme joystick if all is well. Cant think of any new games to play so im trying out the simulation genre. My lappy specs on sig

    Hi,

My name is Sydney Wieffer and im from The Netherlands, as you see im a newbie to this forum.
After searchin for a long time for more info about the 8400m GS i finally found this forum.

Alot of good information to be found here, but still got a couple of questions about this videocard.

    First to start,
Iv got now a HP Pavallion DV9770 with this specs:
    First question to start of:
    1.
What is better in use? Vista HOME? this is what i'v got now, or WINXP?

    2.
Where do i find stable drivers ? On the Nvidia site it said i must download it from the HP site, but this driver crashed mine Vista and gave it a bluescreen with info that the driver of nvidia is bad.

    3.
Overclocking this videocard... is that risk free?

And ohyea Vista gave my grafics -i tought- a 2.5 in score :(

And for now, i want to play Battlefield 2 but its very slow on my laptop :( My desktop pc with 7600GT is much faster with less specs, my laptop got better specs then my desktop pc.

How much more powerful is the ATI mobility HD2600 512mb GDDR3 than the 8400M gs 256mb.

I'm looking at these two laptops:

    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16834147659

    http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16834101154

THings I want to use this laptop for:

I am looking for the ability to play some games like Myst V, Uru, Tiger woods golf, GTA SanAndreas, and likely some newer puzzle type games like the myst series (my wife likes these a lot, right now she is playing Myst V on our current laptop with radeon mobility 9200 64mb and she doesnt seem to mind how slow or low res it is. It actually doesnt look bad, its just a low res.)

I also want to be able to stream movies from netflix to my Home theater via HDMI.

WHich one of these video solutions is more future proof?
Is there another laptop that I should be looking at for around (preferably less than) $1000

The HD2600 is by FAR the better card. It's about the same as a 8600m gt :)

The only thing is the gateway is vista 64 bit so there may be some compatibilty issues.. But hey 4 gig ram :D
