    well i e-mailed them this

"is their any way you could confirm this as i have heard from various sources that you might be lying, im not saying that you are but could you in any way show proof that it is what you say that it is

    one of these sources said

"That's a lie, even at stock nVidia clock's
the 8600M with GDDR3 memory is only 700MHz (effective 1400MHz).
Plus, in the U.S. at least, it seems to come with DDR2 memory."

    and got this reply

"In response to your query regarding the HP notebooks graphic card the 8600m the max clock speed this can reach is 1400mhz the standard clock speed is 800mhz as we do not have full detailed information on the clock speeds on are website this information I have provided for you with can be found via the following web link and the by selecting the 8600m graphics card from the right hand side of this page.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_8_Series#GeForce_8600M_Series

I hope this information is of use to you. If you have any other queries, or need any other information, please do not hesitate to reply directly to this email, keeping all previous history."

so if its standard mhz is 800 what version of the graghics card is it?

    If it's standard at 800MHz it's the DDR2 version.

    Hi guys!

First of all, I should say that I'm totally new to this "graphic performance & optimization" scene, so many of you will call me ignorant many times!
Please be patient for my future knowledge sake! :)

I have a 8600M GS on my HP dv9575ep laptop and I would really like to achieve better performances on the games I play, but I don't have a clue about doing so!

My first issue concern my graphic card's dedicated memory!
3DMark06 (wich I installed but don't even know how to "read" it's information) tells me that I have 246MB of "Total Local Video Memory" and "Total Local Texture Memory"! Is this correct? Shouldn't it say 256?

I also run some tests (again, wich I don't really know what their about) and the 3D Mark score was 2346!
From what I've seen in many posts in this thread, this score is very low, isn't it!

Would someone please help me be a little less ignorant in this "graphic card scene"?

    Thanks for all your help!

I have the new Drivers (167.26) and I am very pleased. I can play Crysis SP on 1280 res with more than half the settings on high ~30fps. My 3dmark06 score broke 4000. Not too shabby.

well just one question...When i used to have my normal xxodd drivers my g-card was showing 756shared and 256 somthing dedicated but with the new .6901 DRIVERS i got from laptogo it is showing 256 dedicated memory and 1279shared memory wich add up to 1535mb total:S

Lol is this a kind of over clock or a bug?Isnt the max mem it can hold makes a plus to 1gb (256+756) not 1535:S

Are you using Vista, or XP?

Also, don't worry about the shared memory displayed, it's not important.

Well i am using vista 32 bit with a 4gb ram laptop

Bdw why do you say i shouldnt worry? is it because the drivers show a bugged ammout of shared memory or something? or is it because windows vista only allocates shared ram to the graphic card when it needs so ....so example if i have 1,2gb allocated to the graphic card and it is using only 200mb the other 1gb is not going to waste but still remains to be usable with programs and stuff other then the g-card

I have the Asus F3SV with the 8600m GS. We all know that the GPU has been underclocked to 500/400.

I overclocked it using RivaTuner to 675/550 and got 2700 in 3dmark06. This is not a really good result is it?

BTW, im using stock Asus drivers.

Not really. With stock drivers at 475/400 I was scoring ~3100. I don't know the difference b/t the GS & the GT though, there must be something very different, or at least something very importantly different, since you clock speeds are much higher than mine and your 3dmark06 score is much lower.

Vista is the reason you're seeing more than 1GB total VRAM, Vista allocates system memory to the graphics card independently of the Turbocache features.

And I say you shouldn't worry because the card will use what it needs, when it needs to. The shared memory is not something that can (or needs to be) tweaked or monitored by the user.
    With stock drivers that's a decent result. I assume it's at 1280x800?

The -GT has twice the stream processors, it's not comparable to the -GS.

Hello. I have an ASUS G2S-A1. I used to have the 169.01 drivers and quite a massive overclock, as well as an undervolt. Before, on occasion the game would freeze for about ten seconds, before spots and all kinds of corruption came up on the screen, my FPS died, and essentially my drivers exploded.

I've rolled back, and set my clocks back to stock, as well as restored my default voltages. I was wondering what exactly caused that "driver explosion." Was it the very version of the drivers, (a beta driver) my overclock, or my undervolt that caused the problem.

    Feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

I'd say overclock,/undervolt it happens on my desktop when the clocks are too high for the power the card receives.

I have to say that I am completly amazed by this 169.04 driver!
    Previous 3DMark06 scores were 2346 (HP's default 101.45 driver) and 2398 (LaptopVideo2Go 163.75 driver)!
Now, with this 169.04 driver, 3DMark06 score is 2525!

This was my first try out of the LaptopVideo2Go drivers and I have to say that this improvement is amazing!
Because this was my first try out, I'm still a little bit confused...
Does this 3DMark06 score improvement really means that these 169.04 drivers are the "best ones" or the "most suitable ones" for my graphic card? Is there something I'm missing here?
Have I done everything ok or is ther something I should do more?
Are there any recommended ways to improve my laptop's graphical performance?
Please help me improve my knowledge in this area...
Thank you so much for your help!

the only way to improve preformance would be updating drivers and overclocking.remember to see fps in real games not just rely on 3d mark scores

    Thanks for the hint sly97531!
I've just learned how to update to LaptopVideo2Go drivers and haven't tried any overclocking because I don't know how! I have to find out how it works and what safe improvements I can do with it!
About FPS, I've also noticed a great improvements the only two games I have installed in my laptop (PES2008 and Stranglehold)!
Again about overclocking, I know I'm supposed to use RivaTuner to accomplish it, but because I don't really know how to use it I'm a little bit "scared" about the hole thing! I wouldn't wan't to do something that could harm my laptop!

With the 169.xx drivers, you can overclock using nTune, from nVIDIA. It unlocks overlocking, and allows you to overclock from the nVIDIA Control Panel. Simply go to the "Performance->Adjust GPU Settings" to change the clock rate (note these tabs aren't visible before nTune is installed).

I just overclocked to 482/413, and everything is working fine, though I've yet to play a 3-D game with it. GPU-Z also reported those clock speeds, so I'm pretty sure nTune is doing its job.

Thank you so much for your help Apollo13!
I am downloading nTune right now and I'll install it!
So, what I have to do is increase both "Core Bus" and "Memory Bus", right?
Is there any recommendations about these increments (like 50 to 50)?
How can I now when to stop? Temperature? 3DMark06 score? Wich?
I've just checked in nTune and it doesn't let me modify the fan behaviour, is this normal?
Please appologise me for asking so many questions, but I'm almost completely lost!
Thanks again for your assistance Apollo13!
    Cumps!

PS - In RivaTuner there is an option to choose if we want to modify the 2D or the 3D clocks! nTune doens't say if the moddifications are for 2D or 3D! Does it assume it's only for 3D?

Just posting to let you know what the latest 169.09 drivers have done to my laptop's performance!
    I have a 8600M GS (original 500/400 clocks)!
I was using 169.04 drivers with no known problems and had a 3DMark06 score of around 2533.
Know, using the 169.09 drivers I have exactly the same score with no known problem yet.
So, wih both 169.04 and 169.09 with scores around 2533, there was no improvement on 3DMark06 scores!

    --- // ---

I have a little question if someone can answer this for me...
Before and after I upgraded my system memory from 2GB to 3GB, the 3DMark06 scores are the same (2533)!
Only WindowsExperienceIndex saw an increase (5.2 to 5.3 on gaming performance)!
The shared memory of my 8600M GS also increased a lot (don't know the exact values)!
Is this normal? Shouldn't the 3DMark06 score increase aswell?
    Thanks for your help!

Query may have already been answered but I cant find it if it has, or its a stupid question - im relatively new clock speeds on graphics cards.

I have a 8600m gt which is clocked at Core -475, mem- 400.
The Nvidia site says the memory clock is 700. Is it safe for me to overclock this card then as it is 'underclocked' and by how far?

    Thanks

Your clock speeds are normal. Your clock speeds are for the ddr2 version while the 700 memory clock is for the gddr3 version. I have my 8600 clocked at 555/490. You'll have to manually test what your laptop can handle.

80C Idle, or during max load (I'm assuming under load)?

    Question in general:
What's your current GPU idle temp un-OC'd? What's your idle temp when OC'd (If you've OC'd your card)? Mine hovers around 52-53C according to speed fan (un-OC'd), but that seems a tad bit TOO low, IMO (It incorrectly reports my CPU temp to be around 37-39C idle, which I'm sure is too low to be true. CoreTemp reports 50C idle, which seems more realistic)...

That sounds about right. On my Vostro 1700 the GPU's temperature is as low as 41 degrees when idle. Overclocked at 650/530 temperatures rise to about 60 degrees.

Wait, what are you guys measuring your temps with? It seems like there's discrepency between SpeedFan and the NVmonitor that comes with nTune.

nTune seems to report an even lower temp than SpeedFan does. Guhh... I hate this, where the heck are all these different softwares getting their temperatures from?! There can't be a billion thermal sensor in one machine reporting different temps...

Nah, I did, and I got it working now.

Anyways, it can't even access my GPU temp (I don't see any options to monitor GPU Temp. There's only CPU and HDD Temp monitoring), so I'm just going to stick with SpeedFan's temp report for now (since it's +7C as compared to nTunes. Better safe than sorry).

If I overclock with Rivatuner will my Dell warranty be forever be void? is there any way for them to tell? I only ask because my dvd drive failed and I'm going to get it replaced soon.

No, it will not void your warranty for any part except the GPU (and related cooling system, etc), and as long as you restore stock clocks they can't prove it was OC'd anyway.

To the extent of my knowledge, that is extremely hot for an idle temperature. Perhaps you've got a virus secretly eating up your CPU, or maybe even a dust-bunny, they do have rather sharp teefs.
